i'm still on the fence about this thing. the kickback issue doesn't exist on my DIY spline jig. unrelated: nice to see someone else who went through the nightmare of a serious palm tattoo.

Hey mine works fairly easily but it’s not too easy. Seems okay. I actually leave my lever activated all the time. I wonder if anyone has ever had issues leaving it on so to speak. I think I saw somewhere that it shouldn’t be but I don’t know what it could do harm to.

@@davidbryanwoodworksandmore I can’t be sure but I’d imagine if the tension if set to “off” so you can sand extra wide boards it may produce uneven results if that makes sense? When loosened it introduces a slight gradient to compensate for the overlap if that makes sense. That’s my understanding anyhow. So I’d only activate it on doing wide boards. As far as being harmful to the machine I shouldn’t think so otherwise I can’t imagine they would of produced it as a feature 🤷‍♂️

Great video. Considering buying this one, was curious how well the dust extraction works with just the bag? I don't really want to buy a dedicated dust extractor for this. Or are you using your normal shop vac with the planer? I'm guessing even if it works it'll clog up quickly so you'd still need a cyclone or something in between.

@woodcraft_cz Hi, really glad I found your channel and really like the way you do your videos. Actually a funny story how I found your channel => As I'm just beginning my woodworking journey and am working out of 1/2 of my in-laws 1 car garage, I'm looking for a small form jointer and planer. Scrolling through the FB marketplace, found a listing for the Shinko AH200 jointer. Never before heard of this brand, but loved the spiral/helical cutter head, so started doing more research and that's when I stumbled onto your video. Looking at your video, I'm also guessing that you are the one the listing belongs to as I'm from CZ as well :-D After watching some of your videos, I'm definitely going to get a Shinko jointer and the IGM PS33 planer once available again. I would like to ask you some Q's, how big is the difference between your jointer and the s versions with the cast iron tables as well as the bigger AH260s? In other words, when you were purchasing your jointer, if the AH260s version was available, would you choose that instead? Also do you need one of those large stationary dust extractors or would an industrial shop vac with a cyclone barrel separator suffice?
@woodcraft_cz
@woodcraft_cz 19 күн бұрын
Haha wow small world, yes that’s my advert as I upgraded to a large format jointer now 😁 no the bigger version (AH260) wasn’t available at the time but if it had been I guess I would of bought it. Neither were the cast iron tables. I did consider upgrading the tables but never really saw the need. You can’t go wrong with the Shinko, for small format jointers I still believe it’s the best one and I can imagine the 260 better still if it fits your space. All the best with your woodworking journey and hezký den 😁

I have similar issues. Sadly I've had absolutely zero luck with the system (both the narrow chisel and the regular guide). The damned thing rounds the whole bevel, every single flippin' thing I put in there. I was better at hand-sharpening my very first time than I've ever gotten with the Veritas. Hell, years ago I made a ridiculous "sorta honing guide" out of a 3" scrap of beefy paint stirrer stick, a grimy old fender washer, bigass bolt from my grandpa's old dairy junk, and 2 skateboard bearings (orphaned fidget spinners). That thing is ugly as hell but boy does it work. I wonder if Lee Valley will take the Veritas back after 2 years...

For what it is worth you put screws through the side holes in the hole borer into the wood, but the socket is still the best option. Also, like with an improvised chisel jig, start bigger. If you want a 12 mm dowel, run it through the 14 mm hole first. Then you have a better blank for the 12 mm. I bought it because I need 1.9 meter long 11 mm dowels. You have to support the wood on both sides of the jig on the second run, a loose 14 mm hole going in, and a loose 12 mm hole going out. Then you sand the sucker down to 11 mm. I wouldn't have bought it at all except they don't sell 1.9 meter by 11 mm dowels in the known universe.

I would love to use Microjig Half Guage. It is cheaper ($34.00 in amazon) compared to the Hongdui one ($46). However, shipping cost to where I live (on the other side of the world to the US) shipping cost is $15.18 and import duty is $ 15.89. So the total is $65.07. The price of the Hongdui 1/2 Guage already include free shipping and import duty. The shipping cost alone for some products from the US is more than the cost of the product. Alternatively, for products that is not too bulky and heavy, I sometimes wait until a friend is visiting the US before I make a purchase. Then shipping is practically free.

I’ve owned both and I agree. The build quality of the Chinese one is much better. And weight? I’m not taking it backpacking across Europe . I see his point regarding the magnets but having it score a line for me is way more important that sticking it on a vertical surface (I’ve yet to need to). I returned the micro jig - I like their products but the only plastic tools I want are push sticks and other items that I might nick with a saw blade.

@rfehr613
@rfehr613 5 ай бұрын
@woodcraft_cz sorry, I meant templates for setting up the jig. You were having issues getting it setup to cut the proper diameter. And while your procedure for getting it setup properly certainly might work, it's undoubtedly a bit time consuming. So I was thinking maybe you can just get some dowel templates that are sized perfectly, then you can tighten down the jig bolts with the cutter pushed up against the template. If there's enough play in the jig, that might be a much faster way of getting it setup. A good hardwood would be easiest for making templates, but aluminum or steel templates would be better for durability and precision. Just an idea...
