Or you could just not add any chemicals to the bucket and just empty it out once week or two and replace the water when you see a good population of wrigglers. Larvae can't survive out of the water.

I have the same problem here and it can be fixed if your tree is not near a wall or other way that they can climb. Inverted Cone: Install a cone or metal sheet around the trunk of the soursop tree. Position it so that rats cannot climb past it. Ensure the cone is smooth and wide enough to prevent them from scaling it. Plastic Band with Grease or a Tube: Use a plastic strip or smooth material around the trunk and apply grease or oil (harmless to the tree) to make it harder for rats to climb. 😁💪🏻

I was suggesting caging the whole tree via PVC pipes & wire mesh & connecting it to an electrical motor or solar poweredmotor used in electric fencing but whatif you cover those same plastic containers with the same hardware cloth or some other managable wire mesh & linking them via wires to the same electrical / solar powered motor! I think that'd work too cheaper & quicker that enclosing the trees in a cage.😊

Id say try making the cages from metal hardware cloth. I bought a huge roll if the 1/4 inch stuff yesrs ago as it was vheaper than buying just half. Ive used it for many things. Especially critter control. Word of warning. Heavy leather gloves and big tin snip, anf very strong hands. For big straight cuts tho my hubby gets the small circular saw out. But we have used it for many thing. I have made a planting table top with it. Its strong and durable and so far(knock-on wood😮) no squirrels or mice or rabbits have been anle to chew through it.

Here in the Caribbean some frustrated fruit farmers use this method as a very effective method against the Green Monkey invasion. Build a frame out of PVC pipes & cover it in hardwarecloth or a more robust metal mesh & link it up to a power source probably solar powered once they get "zapped " they'll tell the others in the troup & they'll leave you & your fruit in blissful peace. You'd just have to regularly prune the trees to keep them within the electrified cage.
@geriannroth44911 күн бұрын
Maybe abit extreme pest control method for all those closely planted trees you have but you could just have it set up for your MOST DESIRED FRUIT TREES!😊😊😊
@geriannroth44911 күн бұрын
Maybe a kevlar based material for the bags or wrap the plastic containers in metal mesh? Maybe rig up a protective cover or netting hooked up to an electric device used to shock animals/ livestock. In that way you'd protect the whole tree link them up in a series or parallel system this would prevent them from even climbing the tree cuz they're naturally very nervous animals & they pee frequently which as you know can contaminate the contact area with the leptospirosis virus. If you get a technical guy or electrician I'm sure he could safely rig up your trees.

Sucks to see your fruit getting robbed like that Kelly. I feel your pain. Rats ate most of my mandarins last year. I've started using the chain mesh bags as well. Seems to work well so far protecting my mangoes and pomegranates. Keep up the annona pollination project! It's fascinating work! Hope to see some cool hybrids in the next few years...
@FancyPlants11 күн бұрын
Thanks man. Glad to hear it’s working for you. They got every single one of my mangoes this year so I’ll have to protect them like you did yours. Very glad to know it worked! When they would eat your mandarins, would they take the whole thing or would they just eat the skin and leave the rest?

Keep us posted regarding rat damage and those bags. It won't stop the squirrels in my yard -- they chew holes thru metal mesh traps. - Maybe post a report on the Foothill CRFG email group.
@HowlettHill11 күн бұрын
In Aus we have a product called Surefire Couma. This is a bait that has no secondary poisoning. I am on a cattle property and we have still got all our goannas, snakes, kookaburras etc etc etc. We also have not lost a chicken to secondary poisoning (chooks love mice - especially half dead ones). This poison is expensive but worked in less than a week. I have used this poison for over 2 years and have not lost any planted seeds, veg or fruit to rats or mice. With the squirrels, I imagine they would have a similar desire to our parrots (cockatoos, galahs etc etc etc). I leave out high value food for them - seeds and nuts and water. They go to this and leave my fruit trees alone.

Would re-applying the strawberry container over the top of the bag create a double layered deterrent, or just be superfluous? Might consider that if you think it would help.

Thanks so much. I’ll try and do one early this spring. I put most of them in the ground and there has been both success and failures with that, but I just couldn’t deal with all those containers anymore. Unfortunately, raccoons dug up about 20 of the rarest ones and I didn’t find them until they were already Beyond recovering, but we still have enough to make this spring one interesting. Stay tuned. ;)

@@FancyPlants Our growing season is from Memorial day through about the first week in September. But in that short season we get close to 24 hours of daylight and our temperatures average around 70 f. Things that can grow up here grow in credibly fast and can get large. I've gardened for 20 years here and grow a lot of root crops and greens, but have also grown tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, and corn as well as squash. I also grow strawberries and my family grows honeyberries. Some gardeners up here have successfully grown melons, and there have been some breeders growing apple trees. But we also have some spectacular wild berries in our wild blueberries, crowberries, cranberries, and cloudberries. I'm a photographer and during the winter I photograph a lot of snow crystals and snowflakes which keeps me active and enjoying the cold.

I watch another channel out of the LA area that features mangos. He did a tour of another grower that used simple homemade wire mesh envelopes, cut and folded in half. The rats and squirrels won't knall through the metal. I recently bought a roll of stainless steel window screening. I'm going to try a similar technique.
@FancyPlants13 күн бұрын
That’s awesome. Let me know if it works. Somebody tipped me off that there are metal mesh bags for fruit now. When I was researching them, they only came in fabric so I just purchased some of the metal mesh bags because I had not known they were available.

Oh, aside from they hybridization aspect, I can relate, Kelly! The tree rats have been brutal the last couple of years. First they eat ALL the stone fruits, then figs, now they're after cherimoyas again. I'm having some success w/cheap humane traps and stale pecans as bait. Gotta trap more, tho. - Elisabeth in Arcadia
@FancyPlants13 күн бұрын
oh tell me more about these stale pecans as bait... never heard that. I didn't know they made mesh metal bag protectors. It's like each year they get worse and worse.

Oof! Have you tried capsaicin? I hear making things spicy can deter most mammalian pests, but you’ll have to wash anything that’s been spiced up well and wear gloves lest you make things spicy for yourself too….it seems to work though….i hope things go better the rest of the season.

I would try coating the containers in bitrex or spray deodorant. Bitrex will work the best and if you can't get your hands on liquid bitrex you can try spraying down the containers with a healthy dose of air duster or industrial denatured alcohol that contain it to deter human consumption. Fun fact, Bitrex is the most bitter chemical in the known universe with a single drop being detectable by the human tongue in an olympic swimming pool
@dean221113 күн бұрын
i dont think humans did this lol im pretty sure humans dont chew through plastic to get to apples when they can just open the containers.

Suspect you got skimmed off by the seller, because most of the begonias are fairly common in Asia. For example, a begonia ferrox plant in a 4" pot with the plant usually larger than the pot usually costs $2 in Chinese market. There's a different variety to ferrox, with the spike being chocolate-colored dome shape instead of black cone shape, is better looking and worth around $10. In Chinese market, buldipholia, ninjamanjancy, darth vader, and raha are pricer and cost around $10, and variabilis is the rarer and most pricy among them, costing around $20. The rest usually costs $1 to $2. Anyway, maybe there are more begonia growers and buyers in China so "rare" begonias will quickly become common. Most begonias grow pretty fast.
