I have Craftsman lawntractor with 17hp brigss engine, and it can pull priest out of choir boy. I have now sawme project going like yours was. I did same steps, first I grinded all the rust off then I applied rust converter. Now I need to paint it. Did your rust converter held well? Did you do anything to the underside?

So far so good. The top looks in great shape, just typical fading when you use rattle can with no hardener. We live on a sandy lot, and it's really dry all summer so I didn't do anything to the bottom because it's constantly getting sand blasted.

@@TheSaturnV Yes, it seems like although I live in other side of the world we have the same issue. It is waste of time, money and paint to fix the underside because it will wear off from first mowe. Theres also no permanent fix for the deck. It will wear out in time no matter what. I think best would be to paint it max one time and then change it to new one or good shaped used one. The problems is where to find new decks for +15 year old mower.

Looks great, and great editing. The flat bar on your driveshaft should be perpendicular to the flat bar on the opposite side of the rubber coupler in the rag joint though. That way it can freely flex several degrees no matter where it is in the rotation. Otherwise it will bind, as you saw happen.

I just purchased a 1972 149. Original owner took amazing care of it. There's two things I'd like to fix for it to be perfect. The first is the handle for the pressure release valves no longer functions. Is there a way to relieve the pressure with that lever not working? Second issue is the steering wheel shaft has a lot of slop in it. Im reading there's a bearing/bushing that is easily replaced?

Hi Buddy, I have exactly the same machine that has been through multiple owners, and everyone fiddled around with it to the stage where it would not work at all. Now I have it and I have sorted out the wiring and it starts easily now. My problem is that when I run it, the left wheel turns a lot faster than the right wheel. Can you maybe send me a photo of the steering box in place and connected as it should be, as I think they have something wrong wit the position of the gears and links to the rear end. Please send me photos from the left side and the right side so that I can see the position of thee links when nothing is activated. Thanks in advance.

Hey there, I wish I could but I sent that mower back to the owner years ago. Did you put in new gears? They have to be reassembled just right or the drives will behave like you describe. Also make sure the brake linkages are well oiled and not binding. They drag really easily.

Great video. Thanks! I’ve had my i1046 for 18 years, and until this summer’s it’s treated me very well. Cutting about 1 1/4 acre with about 40 trees, the zero turn feature has been useful. Would I buy another? Nope. Servicing this mower is a bear! Lots of extra linkage to deal with, especially changing the drive belt that’s up in the tunnel. But, with about a thousand hours on it, I’ve only had to do a couple battery replacements, regular oil changes, linkage and spindle greasing, and blade sharpening (Until this year of course). This year needed some front axle tightening to eliminate excess steering wheel play, which also led to welding up a couple frame stress cracks behind the axle’s mounting position. Changed the drive belt, replaced the starter as the actuator was worn and caused a few broken flywheel teeth, and also replaced the flywheel ring gear. Hoping it’s sorted for a few more years. I’ve always wondered what’s going on inside that steering gearbox, and now I know. Wonder if that outer bolt with jam nut is to adjust gear-lash/play?

I call this calibrated steering. There are not 2 differentials but 2 independent hystats where each hystat has a variable displacement pump. The steering wheel sets the turning radius and the speed of the back wheels are calibrated to the steering wheel position to give the speed ratio to accommodate the turning radius.

I had 2 of those Craftsman GT 5000. One was like new (2004) the other I acquired for parts. I bought the good one in 2019, from a friend that bought it new. He used it for 4 or 5 years. Then parked it in his shop. I had 2 acres to cut, it did a great job. My wife and I retired, down sized on the home and yard. Sold the good mower, took the engine off the parts mower put it on a Murry 40 inch cut . It had a 12.5 Briggs it had some serious problems, the top compression ring broke in 3 places . Would need a new piston and rings so i put the Kohler 25 horsepower V twin on. Does a very good job. 😊 Both of mine had the 6 speed manual transmission. It was easy to change the oil on those, drain.plugs, and a fill plug. Good luck with yours, those are good machines, in my opinion.

You did a very nice job restoring the Outside of the deck, which i appreciated. But the underside is really Much more important to completely refinish... they rot out from underneath. Once it is brought to bare steel and has cured fresh paint, it'll shed grass as it should and not hold moisture against the pan ~

Also, in use this deck clogs right at where the opening is at the front of the deck. I carry a scraper on mine to stop and get off and unplug it from time to time... Seems like a hassle, but really kind of worth it for the cut and all the other ease of the design 👍

@georgehofgren6123

That's not really true. Manufacturers have found that by putting zerks on above sealed bearings does still grease the bearing below.... Basically as the spindle gets hot and the grease ages, the oils run out of it and thus the fresh grease above weeps oil into the old grease of the sealed bearing below ~

Sears used Very low grade steel on these decks, almost 'pot metal'. That is part of how they formed these decks so deep and 'curvy' tho... Over time, the steel on these decks will Literally rust from the inside out... prolly was recycled steel. So things like wheels and pullies might tear right off. But it's a good deck... Solid. Refinish the under side every few years with sandpaper and good fresh paint and they'll last for the long haul. Fairly sure new decks are obsolete now ~
