I personally think Soulf of Humanity is considered a "Dark Soul" is because it bring actual distinction between good and bad, it bring morality - the Gods (race of Gwyn and Anor Londo people) can do things that are bad, but their souls won't get corrupted from it. It's kinda like with Old Testament - God flooding the earth and leaving only those on Ark doesn't make him immoral or bad, only a human can perceive it that way. That's why our souls and humanity can become corrupted, while other beings stay pure, regardless of what they do. One such example is Smough's cannibalism - it seems the God race of Anor Londo doesn't seem to be bothered by it, but humans might consider it immoral and disrespectful.

@FredZRandall IMO, if the Prima Strategy guide from 15 years ago is still applicable beat-for-beat, them it's close enough to bear the soul of the original game. Dwarf Fortress with a tileset looks *very* different, but remains Dwarf Fortress.

When i played portal 2, i couldn't help but feel like i enjoyed Portal 1 more. I had more fun playing the chambers and felt motivated to try to find the solutions. I really liked the sterile appearance of the chambers, and it helped me focus my attention on the elements that actually mattered to the puzzle. Portal 2 (especially old aparture) felt crowded and all over the place. Sometimes, i was unable to wrap my head over what was necessary for the solutions and what wasn't (once I've spent almost an hour trying to solve a puzzle only to find out in a walk-through that there was a button in the wall). For me, Wheatley was particularly annoying, his jokes were unfunny, and i never had a moment of silence to just sink in. In the first chambers, i would be ANNOYED by him appearing in the corners. I really just wanted him gone. I liked the story they presented us, i liked the elements they brought (besides the gel), but i still prefer the vibes and level design of the first game. Also, I had a few problems with motion sickness on Portal 2 that I didn't have on Portal 1. I love both, and I know most of my reasons to prefer the first game are a "me" problem/question. But as a casual gamer who has a LOT of problems with motion sickness, I'm more fond of the first game

While I really like your breakdown in the video and find it a fascinating talking point, I think the idea (and video title) of one being better than the other is disengenous. Theyre apples and oranges. Both excellent in their own rights and both doing very good jobs at different narrative skews. Portal 2 is EXCELLENT narratively while atmospherically, Portal reigns.

I am not sure if the movie is rooted in the idea of providential justice. Anyone living in India or indeed in any part of the world can tell you that the world is very unfair. For example, there is no justice for the innocent children dying in Gaza, Yemen, Afghanistan, and other war-torn areas, children who are trafficked, children who are SAed and murdered all over the world. In developing countries and in warn-torn countries, the magnitude of exploitation is way larger than let's say in Switzerland. That's a fact and that's what the movie clearly showed. As you pointed out, the good outcomes that happened to the protagonists cannot be compared to the overall overwhelming landscape of injustice. At least in the 90s and earlier, there was a pervasive fatalism in India, where we believed that most of us were fated to be crushed by those in power and by life while a select few were fated to achieve good outcomes. This idea of fate had no notion of justice, providential or otherwise. It just spoke of an inescapable situation devoid of any moral order where a few somehow escaped the grewsome outcomes. The audience also understood that in the context of the 90s, the good outcomes that happened to Latika and Jamal, were only put in the movie so that the audience gets some relief from the general hopelessness of the situation. We knew that the second half of the movie was a commercial decision to engage in wish fulfillment because nobody will pay their hard earned money to watch a movie where children are killed, maimed, SAed, trafficked, and that's it. We see that reality on the streets of Delhi and Mumbai or indeed on the streets of US cities on a daily basis anyway.

Play both, but never and i mean i pray to god you never have to experience half-life source, but still black mesa isnt a replacement but an enhancement with story details mixed in from half life 2's characters including eli and dr cliener rather than the copy past scientists, its a good way to help the modern audience see and develop a deeper bond to characters through the series, even if they were never in the original, in other words its good to keep a hold of the past even while moving forward in our timeline, because if the past didnt exist then the present wouldnt either

great video, though I do like portal 2 a lot more. like the tone of the first game is good but that's just about everything that's good about it, it's just kind of bad and janky in most other aspects. and with portal 2 having genuinely the best comedy writing I've seen I'll gladly make that tradeoff. maybe portal 2's puzzles are a little bit lacking but with the level editor existing if I want to get stuck on a puzzle for multiple hours there are a ton of high quality maps to choose from even if the workshop doesn't really give a good way of finding them

Another solution to the issues you brought up in Drawing Lines in the Sand is that further context is needed. When talking about games, people talk about them for some other end. For example, if I asked if you've played Half-Life, and you've played Black Mesa, I can talk to you about HECU soldiers' tendancy to throw grenades. In this way, they're "same enough". However, if I wanted to talk about Xen and how boring it was, Black Mesa would have failed to convey that. Therefore, whether any two versions of the game are the "same" depend on whether the two versions do not change the attributes we aim to discuss. If they do, then they are different and need to be treated differently. If we disallow context free discussion, then the problems go away. It is worth asking if this is viable, and to that I say yes. Because, even if we could define two tokens of a game to be the same, and you've played one and I played the other, and we wish to discuss some aspect, if I do not remember the aspect at all, it is as if I had not played the game. Sameness conveys nothing without the further context of the discussion.

I came from playing the original Monster Hunter games on the ps2 and subsequent games (MHDOS is the best in the series and then world). Greatsword bred through and through GOTCHA BITCH. I never got into Dark souls, but I did play Elden Ring. Loved going dual colossal greatswords. Completed Elden ring in its entirety. Decided to pickup of DS remastered 3 days ago. Just beat it. The fact that the game gives you the Zweihander right at the firelink shrine, was kind of funny to me. It made most of the game trivial. There were parts in which pissed me off, essentially some of the gauntlets required to get to the next shrines close to the bosses. But it becomes easier the more you play. Absolute Zweihander victory. Was able to beat most of the bosses on the first try. Beautiful world and story in its tragedy. I fed 80 humanity to the fair lady, and then accidently R2d off my thigh killing her before even gaining access to the shortcut. I expressed all stages of grief very quickly. I held onto her soul.

Even though this is an older video I just got recommended it recently. My take is that I don't have a problem with video games as art, but then the game still needs to be fun (otherwise why make it a game) and for any form of art if the meaning is so obscure that hardly anyone gets it then the artist has failed at communication. Good art has an easily digestible surface layer that conveys the core message in a way that nearly anyone can understand while having deeper layers that expand on the message as a reward for those who invest the time to understand. The Witness fails on both fronts, it's a mediocre puzzle game at best that overstays it's welcome with the excessive number of puzzles (and has a few truly awful timed ones in the endgame) and falls hard on the art/story side with how poorly the game communicates it's ideas and expects the player to "draw their own meaning" which feels like a cop out.

I would argue that for the skill queuing, it is a way to increase the skill ceiling. If a player knows attack timings better, then they can react to enemies more dynamically. If they don't know the timings, they can queue the jext ability to be carried out.

While I do appreciate the way you set apart the two games, I couldn't disagree more. If there's something that Portal 2 does better than 1 is certainly the worldbuilding and atmosphere-- in Portal 1, it just felt to me that they wanted to replicate the feeling of Questionable Ethics in HL1 really hard-- you know, the whole "what did they know that I didn't this whole time?" feeling. Which in turn made for a really boring world to me-- it wasn't nearly as expansive as Half Life's, yet it was trying to convince me it was. However, in Portal 2, the world expands in such an incredible way-- it doesn't feel like it's tied to half life anymore nor does it try to be something in that same tone, and that's so much better than the vaguely threatening setting you guys seem to like so much-- it doesn't quite hit it for me. ESPECIALLY with how funny GladOS was in Portal 1, she nevef scared me or anything. On the contrary, I was always laughing at how absurd everything was-- something I could never feel when regarding the Combine's oppressive control over the Earth. Heck, even when it does go dark Portal 2 is better than 1, I loved to see how Aperture got so broke that they had to make scientists do tests as well, how each and every bad decision Cave made came from a misunderstanding of what real science even is to begin with, and see how that eventually led to his downfall and only real scientific breakthrough: GlaDOS, which in turn destroys everything in its path, putting into question if it's even worth ut to pursue that kind of knowledge (which, ironically, ties better into the themes of Half Life as a franchise better than Portal 1 could have ever done by connecting itself to that world). That goes for the level design too, I love feeling small and insignificant when put against the Apperture Science facilities' larger than life scale, and having to try and maneuver around the big imposing structures that fall apart around you.

@TheGemsbok
@TheGemsbok 15 күн бұрын
I've played it! In fact, there is a clip of Mel in the conclusion of this video when I am saying that community creations serve to supplement the game's difficulty. The writing in Mel is still a bit goofy for my taste; the quality of the voice acting is all over the place; and there are some indulgently long sections spacing out tests at two points---but you're correct that the gameplay inside the test chambers is basically what I would've wanted in Portal 2. Not ridiculously difficult like some of the Steam Workshop chambers, but puzzles that occasionally challenge you.

It could be considered that the original game is just a master of the actual piece of art, such as it exists in the form of all artifacts used to create it. It's a finalised view of a giant portfolio of concept art, final artwork, prototypes, story drafts, discarded concepts, things the end consumer never sees. If you're remastering a game by revisiting that *whole* work and using more modern tools and techniques to realise a rendition of it that wasn't possible at the time (or say, the original creators time crunched and thus zen happened, or Halo 2 etc) I would in some ways consider it the same piece of art, just a different view of it, a different window onto the art as it existed in that larger portfolio, including the art as it exists in all the heads of all the creators. Arguably Black Mesa is not *Valve's* Half Life, but like a student that surpasses the master and then recreates a piece of his, it is *Crowbar Collective's* Half Life. It is still in essence the piece of art "Half Life", but a different master of it, done by newer masters. Similarly, the Crash and Spyro updates are those games, imo

Resident Evil 4 is an increasingly difficult game for me to discuss. The initial release of the game on the GameCube was the director Shinji Mikami’s ideal platform as he was dissatisfied with the PS2. Regardless, Capcom ported the game to the PS2 to the displeasure of the director and the game went on to get many ports/rereleases to the point where a version of the game claiming to be the original from 2005 is still officially playable on a PS4. I played the PC version in 2018 with a mouse and keyboard which was released in 2014 and wasn’t even the first PC port. Without knowing about or having played that original GameCube version I like to think that I have played a suitable version of the game and feel no need to go back and play the actual 2005 release. On the other hand the 2023 remake of the game which changes so many things I won’t even begin to list here perplexes me. I cannot in good faith say that it accurately recreates the experience even if I try to be lenient. But I still value the experience of the remake as on par with the original because it captures the essence of the original that I valued the most which was strategic, quick and flashy action. I am comfortable with my feelings towards the game but the problem I have is what to recommend. I have a friend who doesn’t have any modern hardware but likes gaming so I would happily recommend the PC version of the 2005 version that I played originally to them. I have another friend who only really plays new games on current gen consoles but I know would love it so to them I would gladly recommend the 2023 remake. If all three of us were to meet do we all unanimously agree that we have played Resident Evil 4? No, I would say that only me and the guy who played the original have played RE4. The other guy has played a good game that I would love to discuss but they played a remake.

The more you talk the more I can feel a voice screaming in my ear "Skill Issue" Because a Heavy Tank Build is absolutely atrocious for me. Small enemies are easy enough. But some dodges all of my attack. Stagger me constantly, and is damn near impossible without spamming and that was due to luck. I even saw some clips of people beating the Raven under a minute. I was just about to comment on that too, wonder if Araki was inspired by this. For those unaware, this is referencing a story (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean) in which the antagonist pursues a plan to accelerate the passage of time, causing all humans to experience the entire existence of the universe until its end, before recurring back to the present day. He believed that this would cause everyone to become aware of everything that is fated to happen to them in the future, alleviating the suffering that they will go through due to those events. Interestingly, I don't think the story itself ever comments on whether it thinks the antagonist was justified in his purpose, only that his methods for achieving it were too callous and brutal.
