I’m going to call foul on the idea that "unlike brass", the woodwind section has multiple families. Even if we set aside historical context, there are at least four ways to categorize brass instruments based on how pitch changes are achieved. The issue is that most modern orchestras tend to ignore two of these categories and only include one type of slide instrument. Brass families can also differ based on their taper and whether they’re whole or half-tubed. Also, if we look at how instruments function and produce sound on a physical level, oboes and bassoons would technically belong to the same family (Hornbostel-Sachs 422.111.2 - double reed, single-aerophone, with regular bore and fingerholes). In contrast, trumpet (423.231), tuba (323.232), and trombone (423.221) would still be considered separate families.

I’d no one talking about how the instruments were tuned down a octave the lowest note on the contrabassoon was a bb-1 when it’s supposed to be bb0

I am surprised you didn't talk about the orchestration of instrument ranges. This isn't about volume or dynamics, it's about range. Look at any great flute concerto. If a composer wants the flute to be heard, either a) write the part higher in the flutes register, or b) do not write any parts for instruments in the same register as the flute! In the case of this video, you should just put the flute an octave higher, or remove the violins from the arrangement and have the violas, celli and basses carry the accompaniment. It will sound perfectly realistic and in balance, regardless of which dynamics you choose. The knowledge of instrument ranges is a much more common problem I see in bad mockups, rather than the volume overcompensation you talk about.

Are the octave numbers different in Britain than America? I’ve never heard Middle C called anything but C4. Isn’t A0 the first note on the piano?

To answer your question at the end of the video, I wound up here because I heard a song from a game and wanted to write the song's score down to play along with it later on guitar. However, I have zero experience writing music for harp and my knowledge of music theory is fairly basic so in my cuurent predicament, I'm struggling to accurately write down what I'm hearing the harp play. I was able to get the guitar parts down pretty easy since it was just 4 measures of a 2 chord arpeggio that repeat. If anyone's wondering, the song is "The End" from Pokémon Sun/Moon & Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. It plays at the very end of the credits once you beat the game. The song only lasts as long as you stay on the screen playing it and you can never hear it again once you progress past that point! It's also incredibly hard to find videos of the song with a decent amount of it playing which is the reason why I started this whole self-project. I've done this a couple of other time with a few other songs, some I were able to complete and others still remain unfinished because I lack musical knowledge for a certain instrument. I'll hafta look more into the bisbigliando technique since I think that's what's playing where I'm getting stuck.

7:58 All Trombone/euphonium players: Must be nice to not change the principles behind how your instrument works when you change. That said, the slide positions and fingerings map well onto each other. Of course, as a trombone/euphonium player you never know what clef you are going to get.

I agree. We’ve lost the art of music making. Virtuosity is out of control. Pianists will never give up conquered territory. They are rated by their super fast interpretations.

I noticed there were pedal options in my sample library, but never saw the point of them ("why wouldn't I just program the notes?") - it never occurred to me how useful they'd be for doing glissandos! 🤯

The Bassoon family is actually pretty big, there G and F tenoroons and the Contraforte which is an amazing instrument with about four octaves of range.

Thank you for the video, brother, but I have a question. When you put the delay effect on the clip, it causes a change in the pitch or a glitch becuse to the tempo track. Is there a solution for that? Thank you.

This is such a good resource, but the ranges became confusing when middle C is usually named C4 instead of C3. I had not realized there is some controversy over this.
