interestingly, after becoming an atheist, I felt a lot more humble. for once, i am able to look at mortality in the eye because I am not scared of hell fire. i feel personally responsible for destroying nature, because i don't feel k dunya faani hai/test ki jagah hai/end of times ki sign from God etc. I can wear second hand clothes because 'halal paisay ko enjoy karna jaaiz hai' wali philosophy laikar nahi chal rahi, i am a better wife because i am not obsessed with husband duties in Islam and 'his money is my money' wali soch. I feel like I can be an adult ready to see myself as a morally grey and forever work in progress, unlike the absolutism that Islam offered...

In its own terms, the ship is a hunk of junk, no matter how many kinds of food it synthesizes. It cannot produce even one living tree. And, we don't even know what a tree is. So our ship, though it can travel at 'warp speed', would only sap us of our more generous sense of humanity. For, for example, no must get even one day off from working to maintain the ship, so long as it needs our tending just for it to keep us both alive and well. Now imagine our ship has automatically taken us to the Earth, and lets us out onto this world. I think we would be far, far more awestruck at this ecological world than we could ever be by suddenly having a fully-functioning USS Enterprise.
