As much as you love to hear yourself talk, telling coaches not to pass heavy is nonsense. It’s far more difficult for youth defenses to defend pass as opposed to run. Youth defensive coaches spend all practice long working on run and just kinda mention pass coverage. Also, it doesn’t take 7 seconds for a route to develop. That’s absurd.

4-3 is a very versatile defense but not needed in youth football when 90 percent of plays are runs. You need 8 in the box. So that strong safety is probably more of run stopper in this defense. Keep the d-line out of the lbs way and let them run to the ball. Also, never allow the dline to have 2 gap responsibility. Play 3 deep zone so the corners won’t have to turn their back to the ball. 3 funda

At the youth level we have to play kids a certain amount of plays. Why not just send the number in with a sub?

I coach 7v7 5th grade rookie tackle. I want to base my offense around pro formation. Also run a lot out of shotgun. Mostly run based. Any tips or plays i may be missing? Thanks

Awesome video Coach. In my 8u league, every team runs the ball and the OL has tight splits. Will a 3-4 scheme work? I fear that we won’t be able to stop the run with a 3 man front. Would love your insight coach.

Your LBs (DOGS) behind the Tackles will fill the gaps the way I do it. Pinch your tackles hit B gap and LBs hit C gap. Loop is the opposite..nose has A gap.. OLB have outside containment and I always have them blitz outside in... I also only use 1 safety with a MLB that will help with A gap and blitz.

Young kids will easily get lost in a mesh concept. Nobody is coming to help him either because it’s man. Man only works well if you have the more dominant players IMO.

Just to answer a few questions. One of the reasons we have it on opposite end of the field is that we also use this drill as partly conditioning. There’s only a few guys standing around watching, and they’re usually getting a breath, because as soon as we sprint over to the other side of the field after the four downs they’re jumping in and the other guys are jumping out. It’s really fast pace. The guys aren’t standing around long. We have other drills for running backside plays like traps and such. This one isn’t made for that though. Playbook coming out soon.

Awesome stuff coach! The only thing I would suggest is to line the offense up from the middle cones and not the sideline. Like spot the ball next to cones. More game like and better visual for us here also. So left side of offense just left of the cones. Right side just right of the cones. Sidelines are still the sidelines.

I honestly haven’t studied it very much. I’m aware of it but it’s one of the very outdated types of formations and play styles. Which might make it pretty great if brought back to life. You’re gonna wanna surch Bob Neyland’s Tennessee Formation. He was the first to use it. Also, you’re gonna wanna look up Dick Beede, the coach of Youngstown State in the 60’s and 70’s. Happy hunting.

I didn’t mention in the video we usually run this out of some type of a QB keep whether it be a QB blast to the outside or a QB follow up the middle or even a trap play where you have an extra blocker going through the trap hole and the QB keeps the ball and follows through. But instead of the QB, it’s a running back. It adds another blocker in the backfield because now, instead of having a QB hand the ball off he’s actually running the ball and it’s not the QB it’s an official running back.

Always have a few counter plays with a guy that can take it to the house…I use to run a reverse with the wing that was on my power side. Only ram it maybe 3 or 4 times a game and usually it was a touchdown or we went the distance… That keeps the defense from stacking to the power side.

I would design a simple 4 plan structure for offense customized to the opponent. I would have my players drill those 4 simple plays all week until they could do it in their sleep. Game day they can go off their wristband for each play/quarter. No need to come up with new plays during the game. If every player executes the drilled plays they'll win. Each game has 4 new.plays learned and executed and can be rotated around for each drive. Just use acronym on wristband. Simplify it.
