Former D2 basketball player here, you might think ‘that is not that hard’ it IS. I was the best in my high school conference and my coach was sure I would make D1. I ended up getting one D1 offer from a bad school (I won’t say who out of respect) so I went D2. I almost never started and I was surprisingly one of the shorter players at 6’3”

What about that staple at the start of the grip? Do you need to remove that?
@HammerItTennis14 күн бұрын
@@jessicavegan if the original grip was started with a staple, you can simply remove it or you can drive it in a little further and just put the new grip right over it! If you really want a challenge you can try to re-use it and get it back into the holes! However, with most modern replacement grips, they have adhesive that will sufficiently hold the grip and you can either remove it or push it in and go on.

@HammerItTennis24 күн бұрын
@@zelittlefrenchman Typically most brands do not use it on their overgrips, but not all replacement grips have it either. If it doesn’t have an adhesive you can always wrap double sided tape on the grip first and then wrap the grip, or you just need to make sure you pull the grip firmly to keep it in place!

You could just not grunt. You’re hitting with a ball machine ffs.
@HammerItTennis2 ай бұрын
@@g2whatbrodie283 grunting is the result of timing your breathing with the shot. Baseball players, boxers, weight lifters, and other athletes will hold their breath and exhale sharply as they are performing the action. The grunt noise is just a byproduct of the fast exhale. Ball machine or opponent makes no difference for the contact.
@Purple0072 ай бұрын
This is excellent which it just popped up on KZbin! Your explanation makes a lot of sense from a physics standpoint when the ball is at it's apex. When the tennis ball is dropping fast though (from a top spin ball), if you are close to the net, hitting the ball above the equator with a vertical or slightly closed racket face will likely send the ball into the net. Shouldn't we also add the trajectory, height and spin of the incoming ball into account? I would close the racket face on a on the rising ball more or less depending on how close you are to the net.
@HammerItTennis2 ай бұрын
@@Purple007 The key to think about when saying “closed” face is closed relative to what? The ground? Because that’s the key to understand is the face just needs to be closed relative to the swing path. If the swing path isn’t upward, and is more level then a closed face relative to that path with absolutely send the ball downward. However downward might be ok depending on how close you are to the net and/or how high you’re making contact above the level of the net.

By changing the angle of attack and coming across the ball it creates more of a diagonal spin to side spin.

This is spot on. The best best best piece of advice is having the head of the racquet higher than our hand. For years I struggled trying to have a horizontal racquet, but higher, which made my racquet face too open and I flew the ball. Letting the head be higher totally was a game changer. Great video!

Cool video. I never really understood the extension principle that you explain here. I always thought of more pushing with the arm but keeping the 90 degree angle more - which seems just wrong. I will say that when you actually hit the balls from the ball machine you have space between your elbow and body. But when you demo it your elbow is super close.

Piece o cake! Thanks. When do I use an overgrip? What's it for?
@HammerItTennis3 ай бұрын
Overgrips are used so you don’t have to change the main grip as often. They are thinner and are made to be changed every few times playing or even within a match. Over grips are usually much cheaper and act to absorb sweat and then changed out.

the thing about high balls is you have to reach it, the essential thing about what you are doing here is stretching your whole arm to hit the ball which gives you the distance to that height, on low balls you can afford to have the ball to be close to you, but on high balls you have to give the ball the maximum distance from your body which is what you are trying to explain here.
