Per ACC, NIH, AHA for adults over 60 When blood pressure is lowered too much, it can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, or even more severe complications like acute kidney injury or cognitive impairment due to reduced cerebral perfusion. Therefore, maintaining a balance between managing hypertension and ensuring adequate blood flow is crucial. The current recommendation for older adults often allows for a systolic BP up to 150 mmHg in certain cases, especially if they are otherwise healthy and do not have significant comorbidities. A reading of 144/85 mmHg falls within this range and may be considered acceptable for many elderly individuals. Risks of Overly Aggressive Blood Pressure Management Aggressively lowering blood pressure in older adults can lead to adverse effects. Studies have indicated that overly stringent control of blood pressure can result in inadequate perfusion to vital organs, including the brain, kidneys, and heart. This is particularly concerning because older adults often have different physiological responses compared to younger populations.

Should people at home AVOID using wrist cuffs? If not, correct arm position when using. Thanks.

Yeah because I'm sure my doctor is going to spend the time comparing his blood pressure monitor to mine from home. This is such a ridiculous expectation no doctor is doing this for their patients

Ugh!!! My last Dr visit they checked my BP over my sweatshirt sleeve and it came out to 147/101!! Bought my own monitor, learned how to properly check my BP, and lo and behold it’s always near perfect. So frustrating.

So much horse sh!t! My blood pressure in high school was Always 134/85, now 66 its higher. The information put out isn't in the best intrest of anybody who isn't selling something. So many untrustworthy inputs and so little to believe. To me if I'm buying a "side affect" when I buy a prescription, I'll keep what I have. The longer we live the longer we are at the mercy of those collecting the money.

Good info. Always keep an informed eye out on medical practitioners. They make a ton of mistakes from diagnosis to lab work, and certainly in billing. The default position of a doctor is to prescribe meds. My experience over many years with them is to be very, very thoughtful about what they recommend. Do your homework. You are responsible for your health, not them.

I agree with all said but I think there is one more thing to consider and that is from my personal experience. To me this is not only about relaxation but also about anticipation, pure mental thing. My first reading is always higher (sometimes much much higher) and that is regardless if my blood pressure measured at the doctor's office or at home. If I'm at home alone, no TV on or any other noise, I'm sitting calm, relaxed for 5 minutes (no stresses) my first reading is still 5, 10, and sometimes 20 points higher than the 2nd or 3rd reading.

How do they know the upper arm monitor is accurate? IMO a difference of 5 or 10 points is insignificant, because our bodies are continually changing....stresses, anxieties, diet, etc In fact I wd bet that if this fellow took BP with 2 different upper arm monitors he'd get 2 different BP readings. Look for trends over time with any monitor, and as long as the wrist monitor is in the ball park with your doctor's monitor you're likely getting a good measure of BP with it. Assuming your doctors monitor is accurate ....and by what benchmark is he/she using to confirm their equipment's accuracy? I use a wrist monitor. Peace

Mine is a lot lower when lying down. However one key element missed in many many videos on this subject is that the blood pressure machines are NOT reliable. Until the manufacturers sort this mess out we will have too many inconsistent readings. I have a few machines from so called best manufacturers following research however all give nonsensical readings when repeated. For example how on earth can my reading possibly be 145/93 )ie definitely high) then I repeat it a few mins later same arm same conditions and it says 131/83 - seriously??? I urge people to check their machines by doing repeat readings.

This isn;t correct. I'm 6'4" and my doctor wants me to be 135 over 80. Anything less than that and I slowly starve from lack of oxygen until my heart rate and bp skyrockets up to 180 over 100 for a short while to regain O2 balance.

Its SO TRUE. I measure on a table that is too low and always get close to 140 over close to 90, as soon as i put a 3 inch support on my arm and than check again its less than 130 over less than 85. And so many doctors will tell you it doesnt matter, but it does
