That river is fascinating. The headwater area around South Bend drains a bunch of different watersheds. It even drains a small section of Berrien County, Michigan near the town of Galien, Mi via Geyer Ditch near just north of its confluence with Chain O' Lakes Ditch. Near that marshy/farmland area in Berrien County, Michigan, those upper reaches of Kankakee River tributaries come within a mile or so of some far flung reaches of the Galien River and the St. Joseph River. Both of those rivers drain into Lake Michigan separately. If You look at a Map of "Dayton Lake" near Galien, Michigan, tributaries to all 3 watersheds are probably within relative walking distance of one another. I am sure they interchanged during times of high water back in the days of the extensive wetlands.

One of the first rivers I fished after moving to Idaho in 1989 was the S Fork of the Boise. Instantly fell in love with it but then as time went on it became very crowded especially on the weekends. Very surprising to me that you weren't a bit more successful with catching at least one or two big ones. The regs require release of all fish under 20 inches and usually you're gonna hook at least a couple fish in the upper teens. Another interesting thing about the S Fork is the Fish and Game doesn't stock it, all the Rainbows for the most part are wild fish except for anything that might swim upstream from Arrowrock. I'm with you in that the weather likely was a factor but hope you'll give it another try in the future. If you return and you want to have a shot at possibly hooking a monster sized fish you could consider fishing much closer to the dam. Some of the largest fish hang within a short distance from the dam and primarily feed on chunks of fish that get caught in the dams turbines and the pieces float down river. Tie on a very big streamer like a white Zonker and concentrate on areas where you can still see the dam in the background while you're fishing. Another characteristic of that river is many times the bigger fish feed in the riffles where the water is between ankle and knee deep.

I’ll be back, I’m in the area usually 3-6 months out of the year mostly in the colder months but I won’t let that stop me. I know the area you speaking of, I’ve driven past it many times and thought it looks good and wondered if it would hold bigger fish. If I’m able to get back there before it gets too cold I’ll give it a shot and give you a shout out, maybe without saying where I am exactly, but I’m sure you’ll recognize it. Thanks again, take care.

@onebadshad 10 ай бұрын
I've never used a line specifically designed for this method, but I always choose a bright color floating line so I can use that as an indicator. I don't have anyone in my circle that euronymphs, I would benefit from learning from someone who does. From what I do know about it, it's hard to beat it for numbers of fish. I've seen some who use this method in tournaments that post catches in the 70's for one day totals.@@kennethsilvestri5874

How do you like the encounter and what line are you using?
@onebadshad
@onebadshad 11 ай бұрын
It’s alright, I like it just fine, I bought my wife the equivalent of the encounter in the cabelas brand and I like it better than the encounter. Now at the level and price they probably are made in the exact same factory just a different brand stamped on them. If I buy another fly rod I’ll buy the best prices for the level of rod despite the brand. The line is scientific angler 5wt floating ft. I like the line, as you probably concluded it’s not what comes with this rod setup.
@steerdup3842
@steerdup3842 11 ай бұрын
@@onebadshad I bought my son his first fly rod this past January and it was a Cabelas/White River Brand. It castes nice but didnt last long. The striping guide broke after a couple months then the tip snapped when he hooked on a fish. After several attempts Cabelas finally replaced it. I have the Orivs Clearwater on one of my rods and thinking about switching it out. I know the Encounter kit comes with that line and that is why I was wondering how you liked the line you have now compared to the clearwater line.

at 13+ minutes of the video where you are fishing the stonefly nymph, are you using some type of indicator? what did you rig this?
@onebadshad
@onebadshad 11 ай бұрын
The stone fly was the first fly on the tippet then I had a light bead head pheasant tail fly as a dropper tied onto the stone fly. I don’t usually use a “strike indicator” instead I use my floating line as a strike indicator. I choose a bright color usually orange for my fly/main line and I slightly lead my line as it flows down stream this allows me to change depth on each cast vs using a floating indicator and either changing it often or being stuck with a single depth. Hopefully this makes sense and helps.

Is the Payette any good for Trout around Banks? My father lives in Garden Valley.
@onebadshad
@onebadshad 11 ай бұрын
In my opinion the Payette is an amazing river, when I fly fish I'm not just going for the trout I'm also going to be in nature. I enjoy photography as much as I do fishing so I might be bias about the Payette. Some might say it's not good, that the trout are bigger and better somewhere else, maybe that is true but for me it's about the overall experience. So to answer you, yes there are good trout and fishing near banks. Garden Valley is also close to smaller tributaries in the Boise National Forest which gets even less pressure and more remote.
@boise2Talay7886
@boise2Talay7886 Жыл бұрын
If you're ever back in Idaho and targeting the Payette, check out the N Fork of the Payette if you want a shot at much larger trout. The area that's called the Cabarton run definitely offers more opportunities to hook into some Rainbows in the mid to upper teens. The Middle fork and S fork don't generally have the same potential for fish to grow large due to a combination of different factors. From what I've read the S fork in particular is somewhat less ideal for large scale production of insect life due to the geology in but it is still a beautiful river to look at.

It's a Strike King swim jig in all white with a rage tail trailer, I used to find this jig and 3-4 trailers in a pack on the bottom shelf at the big W-Mart stores for a good price. I haven't seen them there in a while but they have the same thing packaged individually. One thing I do that i believe drives them crazy is I trim the skirt to just where the bend of the hook starts so the trailer has the freedom to move and then I cut the trailer ( about 1/4 off ) so the trailer is now about 3/4 the size if that makes sense. Then when I put the trailer on, I put it on the hook so the rage tails kick sideways, in other words when sitting in your had on it's side the trailer tail will look like a fish rather than a craw, it makes a compact little bait with a great profile and swimming action. When I figured this out one day, Man! they went crazy. Good to hear you're getting out on the water, just keep in mid the St. Joe when it has rained can be deceptively dangerous. Have fun and let me know how it goes?
