300 years of spanish colonialism made Filipinos a lot of self hatred. I lived in the Philippines for a long time and have never seen so many people obsess about skin color and nose shapes before. Its very sad. Filipinos are extremely beautiful people and need to love their natural beauty more.

I encountered the morena phenomenon during my years in South America. It's colonial baggage, just like the crab mentality around a person's ability to speak English. It seems to me that if someone is serious about making a go of it in the Philippines, they need to (at least) learn Tagalog. It's of roughly equal difficulty to Spanish, yet I see a lot of Anglo 'expats" who don't seem to bother and then whine about isolation on their vlogs. If nothing else, having to uncomfortably stumble through a language that we don't have complete mastery of creates understanding for the person we're with as they stumble through communication and relationship hurdles with us. Back to the morena thing. I dated a Bolivian girl who I was really into. She was fiercely intelligent, curious about everything, and had a wicked sense of humor. I wanted to show her a nice time, so I took her to the best restaurant in La Paz. She was ...muted. Uncomfortable. When I asked her what was going on, she told me, "I wouldn't be allowed to clean the tables here if I wasn't with you." There was so much that I didn't know then. I started to catch it though: the way the wait staff dealt with her versus me: dismissive toward her, obsequious toward me. We hurried through our meal (she insisted that we finish it rather than leave). Her dad ran a Pena, and that's where we went afterward: 30 minutes of Andean music and poetry, 30 minutes of conversation, and it goes all night. While she bounced from group to group, completely alive again, I stumbled through, the only non-Bolivian at a VERY traditional Bolivian event. Under the watchful eye of her father, she plopped down next to me and took my hand, grinning with life again. "What do you think?" I told her, "I wouldn't be welcome here if I wasn't with you." She nodded sagely, smooched me on the cheek, and bounced off again. God, she was beautiful. Marcella. Long-lost to me now, but she taught me what a stupid, arrogant person I was in my late 20's. I'm in my mid 50's now. I've made a lot of mistakes, but not all of them, and rarely the same mistake twice. What I DO know is that we have to meet people where they are. If there are biases that result from skin color or height or perception of wealth or crab mentality or lack of exposure to the outside world, those are real to the people we're with. We can find them limiting or ridiculous or unfair, but they're REAL. What we think about that is irrelevant. If your girl is kaymungi, maybe don't take her to a bar full of expats where drunken, loud English and scantily clad bar girls will shut her down. Sure, your arm is over her like you own her, but she doesn't feel safe. And great, you have a condo and a car, and now she lives with you, but she lost her friends because of crab mentality and her family makes demands that weren't there before. You can leave it to her to put her foot down or you can man up. Big Love changes you. You may not be ready for it. But be humble and flexible in case you encounter it. With Marcella's family, I got multiple chances and ruined them. With Claudia's, I got one. Big Love, twice, and I was ready for neither. Perhaps I'll get another chance. I've had 30 years to learn.

In terms of "beauty standards" I have little to no sympathy for the desire for white skin. I find it tantamount to burning an old master or other work of art. I mean what kind of person would do that? And then to know they've done this to themselves? No, sorry, not for me. Tom, you can meet them where they are. There are still plenty of authentic morenas available. If we wanted an Irish grandmother, we'd go to Dublin. I had a discussion about this phenomenon with one of my wife's nieces. She is light-skinned, unlike her parents and siblings, and you can tell that she spends a lot of time and money and effort on the effect. When I told her that western men do not like it, she did not believe me. Her attitude was: Everyone knows that white skin is more beautiful. I failed to convince her otherwise. So I left her with this: Just look at the women with western men (here in the Philippines), just look at western television and movies, have a closer look at KZbin. Ah, I saw a crack. She did not change her mind, but I could tell that she was re-evaluating. She lives on another island; so hope I can chat with her again one day. You say this is "colonial baggage," but I am not so sure. Women in the US love to tell us that men set the beauty standards there. This is so untrue as to be ridiculous. No, beauty standards in the US are set by other women, and they use mostly shameful tactics to get women to comply. I see the same dynamic here in the Philippines. The demand for white skin comes from women who then pressure other women. I do not for one minute believe this comes from the Spanish occupation. It comes from Filipino women who want to mimic Korea, China, and Japan, as the Asian beauty standard-bearers (in their minds anyway). But. If you walk into my bank in Mindanao, there are about thirty female staff members. Tellers and whatnot. Zero of them are morena. This cannot be a coincidence. Clearly, my bank will not hire morena women. And I guess it is simply unrealistic to expect poor Filipinas to resist that kind of pressure. But I am guessing that these decisions are made by existing female bank employees. On the other hand, if you walk across the street to SM and Gaisano, or down the street to Robinson's, those places are full of morena employees. So if a woman wants to lighten her skin (let's be honest: Degrade her looks), to get a certain job or join a social class, it's her decision. But I will leave you with this: Some of them are absolutely insane. Clinically insane. More than a few times, I have seen women here so white as to be pale, and then so pale as to have a pink hue. Yes, they are turning red. And judging from how they dress, they are so absolutely proud of it.

I was with someone who had low self-esteem and consequently, major trust issues. It was absolutely stifling. This one was also a malignant narcissist because I REALLY knew how to pick 'em. At any rate, the interplay between low self-esteem and lack of trust is gruesome. I became her emotional prisoner on the theory that if I'm completely transparent about everything, always, then there's no reason to distrust me. No. She routinely projected her fears on me: "You're going to cheat on me." "You're going to leave me." There is no effective argument against projection; you're being pre-accused of something that your partner believes you will do in the future, and she believes it with the same weight as if you were already doing it. I naively thought that if I can improve her self esteem, the trust issue would evaporate. No. What happened instead is that with her newfound self-esteem, she monkey-branched to the NEXT one. That's just one person, I know; mileage varies. But I'm loath to take on another low self-esteem project, especially if there's an age gap. It's a red flag that makes me ask better questions.

Oh for Christ's sake, it is simple, if you want a foreign man, DO NOT whiten or lighten your skin. It may not always be the case, but as a general rule, you can have one or the other. As an American I am amazed how many pretty Filipinas ruin their beautiful skin with whitening products. On the other hand, almost every time I meet another American here, he is with a lovely morena woman (I can count on one hand the times when this has not been true). If other Filipinas look down on her ("she looks like a nanny"), that is their loss. Plus it is a great signal, for us and everyone else, which Filipinas are beautiful inside and out, and which are shallow-minded, and have "beauty" that is only skin deep.

Terms of endearment are great when used with someone you are actually in a relationship with. But if you are on a Philippines internet dating site and a girl calls you “love” or “honey” or “babe”, etc., within a few minutes of first chatting with you it means she is either a scammer, a cam girl, a freelancer, a sugar baby, or a lady boy. It's such a dead giveaway I’m not sure why they all still do it.

@@filipinamindset - Actually I did not call anybody anything and the truth is I never make assumptions or jump to conclusions. I simply stated what the statistical likelihood is that a person exhibiting certain characteristics would fall into one of these four categories, and that knowledge dictates what questions I will ask from there in order to confirm those suspicions and how I will proceed from there. Of course, I have to admit that 99% was a bit of an exaggeration for effect. The true number is probably closer to 95%. The other 5% would be girls who are so horribly insecure and lacking in self-esteem that they will fall in love at the drop of a hat. And these potential stalker types can be even more of a headache and more of a potential threat than the scammers. This is because they will inevitable be overly needy, clingy, and prone to insane fits of jealousy over absolutely nothing. When someone makes you their whole world after just meeting you, it is never going to make for a healthy relationship. I actually recently met a Thai girl online who falls into this 5% category and after our first video chat she is already saying “I love you”. This is a huge red flag and so I am obviously proceeding with due caution. Anyway, in certain parts of the South here in the USA it is actually not uncommon for certain women to refer to total strangers as “Hun” (short for honey) - for example a waitress may call her customers "Hun". But as far as I know this is not part of the culture in any countries in Southeast Asia. I have noticed however that when meeting women online from African countries it is a bit more common for them to use these kinds of terms of endearment very early on even though they are not scammers or otherwise trying to get money from you.

If a gal is calling the guy she is sleeping with 'uncle' there is some deep issues going on. Why in the world would you do that? Brother, father, teacher, all names you should not use with the guy you have sex with. That is some deep psychological scar that needs to be addressed. My partner calls me something like that, I'm out. That is sounding like a Freudian Slip. What would you think if I started calling you 'sexy Aunt Judy'? In a sentence... "Wow, sexy Aunt Judy, it feels so good when you move like that." Creepy, right?

Hi Jo! Thank you for the update in your life. I agree with Michael on the innovative use of the bag of potting soil, but yes, the roots maybe need some extra depth to truly bear fruit (as you asked me about on your Patreon page). It’s a bummer to be limited on the groceries you get as you walk them back to your apartment, especially when your time is so precious. Yes. Fresh milk is best (I keep powdered milk on hand). I grew up on whole milk as we always had a milk cow or two to milk by hand. That also makes for a mighty grip for handshakes, or arm wrestling. Later on, was involved with a Grade A dairy in the states, that was an interesting experience.
