Always interesting to listen to John - his knowledge , understanding, & sense of humour- I first became interested in motor racing when my younger brother was a fan of Jim Clark (I live in Jim Clark country!! Still an icon here! ) And through the 70s & 80s supported British drivers! Was at Silverstone the year John won! Albeit practice day! Love driving myself! John is a fantastic raconteur!

I raced at Le Circuit at this time and well remember Turn 1. In 69 I had moved from a production sports ar (Triumph TR 4 to a smalll Sports racing car called a Bobsy SR3 powered by an 1150 cc Holbay engine putting out something like 130 HP and weighing about 1100#. To win my class I needed to lap at about 1:58 sec but was coming up short abut3 or 4 sec. I went to a practice day and ran about 40 laps. I felt my biggest problem was Turn 1 and concentrated on that doing about 6 or 7 laps each run and then stopping and thinking about how to improve and trying again. By the end of the day I did my 1:58 and won the next race, which was a prelim race for that years Transs Am series. I probably drove about 20 races there and always loved it, always thought I could do better. Compared to Mosport the track was vry hardd on brakes. Love your F1 commentary. TS Braham

The way the car lowers just as it goes, is almost like telling the competition "ok, game time, try and keep up"

Gilles fut un des plus grands et surtout un des plus spectaculaires de tous les temps, il fallait le voir. Quels témoignages remarquables de la part de Mélanie, sa fille, de Johanne, son épouse et de son rival et grand ami, René Arnoux.

What? Absolutely no comments on this excellent interview with the old boy? Well, for my money John Surtees was probably the most naturally talented driver, along with Jim Clark, to race in the 1960s. And as becomes clear in the interview one of his nicknames wasn't 'Fearless John' for no reason. He could have certainly been in the running for 1966 F1 world champion in he had stayed with Ferrari, but of course that idiot Ferrari manager Dragnoni played one too many political games. And, who knows, maybe if he'd stayed with Ferrari and driven a 330 P3 at LeMans the Ford vs Ferrari movie would never have come to pass - LOL

Excellent. I was lucky to see Gilles race 4 times in Watkins Glen and Montreal. You had to watch him every second. It was so exciting. I also love hearing Rene Arnoux speak about his friend. Two little guys who came from humble backgrounds to get to the top on talent, not money, both with big hearts.

My first Formula 1 race was the USGP at Detroit in 1982. John Watson as sensational in the race and became a local hero interestingly enough. No one knew what an "Ulsterman" was in Detroit until then. Eddie Cheever coming 2nd in that first Detroit race was the icing on the cake. Didier Pironi and Keke Rosberg were standouts as well. I have many photos I took at that race with my Konica TC. To find out how much of a music fan Wattie is makes me smile! Great memories!!
