Brings back great memories of carrying tape machines into concerts whether or not I was the engineer on duty. After attending a wedding, I arrived at the gig wearing the same 3-piece suit and tie struggling with a heavy black transit case, set up the recorder and two microphone stands, not a single person dared question me, got the whole show in beautiful fidelity. Another time I brought a mono Ampex 600 to a local show and the result was the smoothest, silkiest sound I've ever heard. Could never afford a Nagra or afford to have it stolen, but if it had been me I would have pushed the Nagra to at least 0 dB to improve the SNR still further. My rig had two dual-needle meters (Aiwa 6900), both peak and VU for each channel. Unique video, thank you for posting!

How do you get it to 24fps A local dealer is selling one thats running at 29fps
@ANALOGBYDGOSKI3 ай бұрын
In 16BL change of speed is done by exchanging 2 cog wheels located in film chamber (visible in 1:39). So in order to run it at 24 fps, you need such wheels. Make sure what cog wheels are already installed. Speed is written on them.

Show off! I guess this is what you can call a super posh ghetto blaster, ain't it? Perfect for a caviar and champagne picnic set up (or is that not picnic food? I don't know. ) I wonder whether a stereo version will ever show up... Having said all that, with my distaste for anything made in '50s-'60s (yuck! gross! extremely revolting!), Nagra gear consistently stand out in terms of elegance and economy of design. Nothing else comes to mind that even compares.
@ANALOGBYDGOSKI5 ай бұрын
Despite being currently owned by rich audiophiles, let’s remember that back in the day Nagra equipment was bought and used by TV, radio broadcasting and film production companies only. So idea of posh picnic must be a modern day invention. In contrast I enjoy old technology design. But I agree, Nagra always stands out. III was introduced in 1958, and when one compare it with its predecessor (Nagra II CI), it must have looked highly advanced and futuristic.
@Stelios.Posantzis5 ай бұрын
@@ANALOGBYDGOSKI Maybe it is as you say. I kind of doubt that even a rich audiophile would take a Nagra to a picnic. Perhaps a rich audiophile with more money than sense or a rich person who happened to own a Nagra by sheer coincidence would but I think this is as far as this would get. Even in the space of broadcasting, it would take a rich broadcasting house to own a few Nagras. Let's not forget that open reel decks were really expensive toys anyway, even by broadcasters' standards and Nagras were really something else. I am not sure I have seen a Nagra II as I always lusted after the stereo versions or the little spy recorders.

I honestly think that, in terms of aesthetic beauty, technology reached an apex in the 20th century. A lot of the old tech (particularly the higher end equipment) was just made to look really beautiful, and this machine is no exception; what a beauty. This thing is marvellous to look at and I'm fascinated with them. I have only seen a reel to reel up close, once, decades ago, in the home of a friend of a distant relative, back in the mid 80's when I was a teenager.
