Would you consider that relearning shot control is or could be hypnosis in some way? It’s a mindset thing IMO, more than the physical part of the process.

Will be interested in your opinion of the STAR Method(s) when it comes out next year. Many years in development. Hope will be of mutual benefit on multiple levels.

Great video. I believe your sight picture is the way it is because of the cut-out on your riser. If you were to shoot with a traditional asiatic bow, your sight picture would be quite different as you would be shooting off the hand. I shoot traditional thumbdraw, but I find your style very interesting. Please make a video with a traditional asiatic bow with modern gap shooting principles. That would be very interesting. Cheers.

So true.. I just recently developed target panic out of NOWHERE and it's whooping my a$$. To the point that it's making me want to give up but I can't. Bow hunting is in my DNA I just refuse to let an arrow fly at an animal without it being controlled... Too bad I can't control my dang shot 😡😢

No dude, that is the reason when you shoot with a thumb draw you put the arrow on the same side. You use kotra to make up for the loss of Archer's paradox. Why you are using your thumb is because you don't have to can't the bow which becomes more difficult when you're riding on a horse. It doesn't make too much sense to use a thumb draw if you're going to mount the arrow on the same side as you would in a Mediterranean draw.

I bet that sight window is amazing! I've been shooting thumbting on a asiatic bare bow and aiming instinctively. This has been working well for me but I have always been curious about trying a modern LH riser. It may complicate things a bit with the need for some sort of rest but it may help me develop better shooting when using the bare bow.
@kirkglundal428926 күн бұрын
Are you shooting with your arrow on center w the LH riser/bow?

Thanks, Joel. Ever since I saw you thumb shoot, I've been giving it a go. My bow's right-handed though, so trying to shoot left-handed was tough at first. But I'm getting the hang of it now.

Here’s my shot commentary: Draw. Anchor. Line up sight picture. Pin on target. Address the trigger. Realize pin is now floating above or below the target and doesn’t want to move to center. Slowly creep pin toward center. Tell myself this time I will absolutely wait 3 seconds before putting pressure on the trigger once the pin is in the center, because I’m an adult and I have control over my body. Punch the trigger as soon as the pin gets too close to center. Repeat. Still saving up for the Shot IQ course

Thanks for the video Joel. Got my Golden Key Futura rest in the mail to experiment with. It seems the rest blade goes hand-in-hand with the crawl. Without the rest, and using the opposite handed riser and crawl, there's nothing to hold the arrow on a shelf. But then with the rest, you no longer need the finger pressure to hold it on like alluded too. Arrow closer to eye makes for easier close range aiming like with the normal handed riser. Only potential negative is that you cannot cant as far as with the thumb right on the shaft, but that obviously only matters for very specific scenarios. 👍

Without a custom bow and special rest, can anyone do this with off the shelf gear? If I get a left hand bow but I'm right handed will this work or did I just waste more money?
@alanbentham2836Ай бұрын
I have just started doing this. Enjoying it so far. I am also using an Asiatic bow which is what I started with
@DIYSportsmanАй бұрын
Yes you can but you must realize the grip will be backwards. So if you buy a left handed bow it either needs a replaceable grip or you need to be comfortable modifying (sanding/building up with wood epoxy) to make the grip work for that hand.

How many pounds are you pulling with your thumb ?
@markwelch9250Ай бұрын
Idk what his bow poundage is, but some traditional horse bows used in ancient times went as high as 140-150 lbs draw weight. I don’t imagine his is that high, but thumb draw is more than capable of handling heavier poundages.
@justindurand5895Ай бұрын
It depends on your dedication.Think about it back in those times it's either life or death so you want to live or die It just takes a mass of amount of Training to pull that much weight But it does not take very long

👍👍. Fascinating custom bow. I used to make laminated long bows years ago and a few Osage self bows. I shot instinctively as for me it was the most natural way like throwing a baseball. I have incorporated a couple of your shot execution techniques of mechanical releases into my compound archery. It’s sad people don’t understand using your ideas, mindset and techniques will eliminate target anxiety. 👍👍

So I'm trying to get into the hobby mostly for target shooting, but I can't decide between a recurve or a compound. Any advice?
@ZenMaster762Ай бұрын
I have shot and owned both. First recurve and then compound. Would say it depends. Target shooting to compete? Either for different classes. Target shooting for fun/relaxation/zen? I think you may find recurve an interesting and fulfilling challenge. Plus recurve let’s you do a lot of your own work and customization at home. No special trips to get it “tuned” like a compound. Also, it can be cheaper to get a reliable recurve. But it is all up to your needs and wants. Either way, it’s a great time. Good luck

Does anyone remember that crocodile dentist game? The game where you push down the crocodile teeth until it finally bites you? It may sound silly - but playing that game mentally when addressing the trigger helps (me) a lot. I’m not trying to make it go off, I’m trying to see how far I can move the trigger without “getting bit” (firing the bow).
@krisalan5327Ай бұрын
I have problem on targets, but not game, i found that i focus on my pin with targets, but on the animal when hunting, so i now shoot targets with a focus on the target and not the pin.

This is how it looks for beginners and advanced shooters don't do it, but that doesn't mean they don't have it. It looks like a desire to shoot at a specific moment. Take a release with a long trigger stroke and in the process of pressing it for a long time you will see everything in your head. There you will meet your old friend trigger panic and most likely he will not be alone.

I started shooting compound about a year ago and before that I was shooting long bow for 2 years off and on. I never knew what target panic was or even noticed if I had it. Once I got into the compound world and learned about Joel, I started to have target panic. I truly believe that Joel is talking about it so much which is making people “think” about target panic and then they started to develop it. 😂😂 and Joel is making a killing with his shit iq

Switched to a hinge 2 years ago and never looked back. Went from a 250/300 shooter to a 290/300 shooter (54 years old, shooting with hunting equipment). For me, the hinge works great while hunting. I shoot 200 arrows/week so I have a solid shot routine with the hinge that is muscle memory. If I focus on my hinge and not the pin/target, I do well!
