Good info. What's funny is the same exact thing happened to me with bare feet in the bathroom. The only difference is one of the black belts called me out loudly in front of everybody and said "no shoes in the bathroom, that's f***ing disgusting!". I then inaudibly murmured"yeah it is, proceeded to turtle into my GI and died in the corner. Lol ok I wasn't that bad but still sucked. Hey, when you're all excited from your first few rolls you do weird things sometimes. Just happens. Thanks for your content. As a middle-aged man almost forty, just glad there's those who tried this before me.

Excluding sucker punches is a big hole in the argument IMO. Geoff Thompson uses the term 'the sniper option' to describe the sucker punch as a defense tactic where - * the atttacker is within conversation range * the attacker has breached 'the fence' at least once * the attack is inevitable (see above) * the defender engages the attacker's brain with a question before throwing a premptive knockout punch (the sucker punch)

In ju jitsu you can only fight one attacker at a time. That’s the difference. In real life if you hit someone fast and hard he will usually be disoriented for a minute and you can deal with the next guy. A lot of people on the street will give up quickly. You don’t want to be wrapped up with one guy. You’ll get kicked in the head by their friend. No good.

I trained with Royler and Rolker Gracie in Rio, Gracie Humaita. Helio trained these guys since before they could walk, awesome skills. The philosophy was that you would train and compete, you had to do both. If you could compete and beat the belts above you then you were ready for promotion. I was promoted from white to Blue in 5 months after competing and winning competitions in Brasil, also consistently submitting blue belts in the academy. Had guys 10 years in blue and guys taking 5 years to get to black, these guys were strong athletes and trained 6 hours a day, morning and afternoon sessions. Basically went through a belt a year, competed in most competitions, placed medals, beat superior belts in academy, you couldn’t deny their promotion. Can you hold a guy down when he constantly submits superior belts and wins competitions? Time has nothing to do with it, it’s about your skill set, which for most can take a long time. But the true deciding factor is your skills, Helio and his sons believed that if you walked in and submitted Purple belts you deserved a Brown belt, if you submitted the Brown belts then you deserved a Black belt. Some academies, when you visit, don’t honor your belt as a guest. They give you a neutral or Blue and then honor your belt based on your proven skill set once you roll with some of their Brown or Black belts. Helio believed in winning fights, skill set was everything, not time in or money spent. When I first returned to the US after time in Brasil, 2010, I was submitting Black belts as a Purple belt, at many different schools, it was embarrassing to see these schools out here promoting based on time. obviously you want to train with recognized teachers or you’re wasting your time.

IBJJF regulations change, always check. Now (2025) they require the gi to have the weight printed on jacket and pants and rules about the cuff depth. My best advice I'd give is Always get 10oz pants, 8oz turn into a wet napkin after 15 minutes of rolling. Same happens with the lighter jackets but the lapels usually solid enough.

With respect, every school is different when it comes to white belts coaching. The school I attend takes it on a case by case basis. I'm a fourth stripe white belt, currently involved in the gracie fundamentals/intermediate sport jiu jitsu programs in my school. Our school is a gracie garage, not a CTC. I think with us, it depends on the white belt. If they've been around long enough and show that they know what they're talking about (when it comes to fundamentals only) then they can coach the new guys a little bit. I'm the senior most white belt at our school (been in Jiu Jitsu for just over three years) and have become the one they send new guys to. The senior belts have told the new guys right in front of me that they "were in good hands". I've got 34 years of martial arts training under my belt, two black belts out of five styles that I've studied (including BJJ) and have experience with teaching. I'm one of the few men that the ladies will roll with because I have more control over my body and they know I won't smash them. Make no mistake. I'm not some awesome BJJ practitioner. I still suck, but at least I don't hurt them. Even the purple belt coach at fundamentals will look to me once in a great while when she's having a brain fart to see if what she was doing is correct. From 1-3 stripe, I felt REALLY uncomfortable with giving ANY advice, because I felt like I wasn't knowledgeable enough to do it. But once I got my fourth stripe, the head coach pulled me to the side and told me that I'm basically breathing on blue belt because of what he's seen and my experience. I just need to roll more with bigger guys to build up that pressure tolerance (I myself am 6'4, 225 and am bigger than most of the folks in intermediate). In fundamentals, if I'm instructing a new guy and one of the coaches come up, I shut my mouth and let them speak. Whatever they say goes, period. But it goes without saying that in intermediate, I keep my mouth shut unless it's to ask questions. If I talk during rolls, it's with someone junior to me, and that's only if they're obviously struggling...otherwise I'm just giving them words of encouragement, because let's face it, we could all use that.

I know it's not about belts, but it is embarrassing still tying a white belt around my waist after 3 years of training a few times per week consistently. I am at the point where a few of the blue and purple belts are asking when I will be promoted to blue, saying it feels like they are rolling with a blue belt against me.
@midlifebjj3 ай бұрын
That usually means you’re about to be promoted. Until then, enjoy being the best white belt in the class! Once you get the blue, you’ll have a target on you.

I roll with everyone at my gym, i don't even think bout it wether its a teen or a female and both. To myself i see it disrespectful if i deny a request when someone asks me to spar with em, unless one of instructors tell me not to because I need more training for competition to spar ppl closer to my weight. At the end its a good opportunity i should relay on my technique more not my gorilla strength

If you have a concern about self defense I would take krav maga first. It equips you with practical defense tools in about 5 sessions. BJJ is a long slog and requires much more time and effort. But they are very different . BJJ is 90% on the ground and KM is 90% on the feet. So they complement each other very well.

I haven’t watched the video yet, so my guess is: new skin, Sports tape, Tooth brush and paste, Deodorant, Nail clippers, Percussion massager. After watching the video, you need a percussion massager. I was debating skipping tonight’s practice because of an old bicycling Olecranon (elbow) fracture. After aggressively massaging my tricep (targeting the area that hurt when massaged) for 5 minutes the pain in my elbow is gone and I feel like I can do pushups.

How often does it happen that someone that is extremely unathletic or old stays at white belt (or a white belt skill level) for 5 or more years despite putting in a consistent 3-4 classes at week? I understand that the belt isn’t important but to play devils advocate, if someone stays at white belt for say, seven years is it likely that the upper belts (and prof) will start giving that person a hard time and harass them, making fun of them for not improving etc? Also if someone like that is never promoted but stay consistent in the gym for ten years will they be better than an untrained person since they have ten years worth of their academy’s jiu jitsu curriculum?
