I'm a 1 stripe white belt and something that annoyed me yesterday was when I was rolling with a guy he would just tap out when I would get into a good position. He said, "I'm just gonna tap because I already know you got me." I took his back with an arm drag and had a seatbelt and he tapped.. I got to mount and he tapped.. Seemed like kind of a jerk move. I couldn't practice subs and he couldn't practice escapes. (We weren't even going white belt hard, lol)
@midlifebjj4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that’s what I call sandbagging. He’s really hurting his game (and yours). If I were rolling with him I would absolutely tell him your thoughts... in a respectful way of course. If he’s reasonable- he’ll understand - if not - I’d avoid rolling with him. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Counterpoint: in my case as a 40+ white belt, I have some limitations on joint mobility from a lifetime of weightlifting and car accidents. The 20 something young buck that ignored my taps and multiple verbal "STOP"s due to (1) having a dominant position and (2) moving my shoulder thru a position that was causing me pain. So yes, I can understand your frustration in someone tapping because he (sic) "knew he was beat" is different than understanding your opponent/partner and appreciating that a Friday evening class with a few 40+ year old beginners do not have the same flexibility & resiliency as 20 yr olds. Did I mention the complete disregard to multiple taps while rolling - it sounds like you respected the tap even though you were frustrated by it. Part of this video touches on this last point - not everyone is at the same level (skill, flexibility, toughness, cardio, etc) as you and if you want to succeed and be respected, respect the tap no matter what.

@@midlifebjj I thought sandbagging was when you’re better than where your comforting at, like a blue belt level person with a white belt competing at a white belt level
@PeterJames1436 ай бұрын
maybe ask him why he did that. I wouldn't call it a jerk move, but it is a little bit insulting. I'm going to try to escape bad positions with a one stripe white belt, probably. Work on my escapes, work on my subs. Maybe he's so much better than you that he can just get out of your mount or turtle with no problem and he doesn't want to discourage you. Sometimes when you do bjj you get worried about discouraging newer people. If you move in a spazzy way maybe he's just terrified to let you work. Maybe he's worried you'll spaz out and hurt him when you go for a sub. There is a real danger of getting hurt by a white belt cranking a sub unless you're way better than him and minding your ps and qs. I wouldn't take it too seriously though. I remember early on a purple belt basically held me in time out for like 4 minutes. probably cuz he was worried i was too spazzy and dangerous, although in my mind I really wasn't. I'm actually proud that I've never hurt anyone with a cranked submission. But I am a big boy so I understand people get nervous.
@PeterJames1436 ай бұрын
@@themekannik yeah I agree. at my old gym there was a guy who would respect the tap but he would say "you can't tap there" because he hadn't finished whatever his move was. that's not right either, you shouldn't complain cuz someone won't let you finish your move. You can explain that that's not where the move ends, or the person's not in danger yet, and maybe if the guy trusts you he'll let you go farther next time, but it's not right to be upset that a person tapped not on your schedule.

I am a 6 week white belt and about 2 weeks ago, I was doing side control drills with my instructor. One tip he gave for top control was to get "heavy," but also to keep tension with your knees to prevent the person on bottom from rolling into you. One night I caught myself on bottom side control rolling with a 3 stripe and I tried to coach him (mid position) so he could prevent me from rolling into him like I practiced earlier. I immediately felt like a babbling idiot and felt so embarrassed. My partner was so focused on the roll and I threw him off his game, bad play. DO NOT GIVE TIPS MID ROLL AS A WHITE BELT.

Great video, and very accurate. I started about a year ago in a new studio. I am older, 52 to be exact. Often kids (anyone younger than 30) would look to me for advise or answers or even coaching. It was hard not to take a "parental" type role and caught myself on quite few occasions where I was involuntary "coaching". When I saw what I was doing I would stop and make sure to bring the coach in as I knew I did not know enough. It is something I do my best to keep in check.

thank you. It’s difficult to not coach even if you’re new to the sport. I’m 47 and I guess as older guys we just want to help. I DO believe it’s okay to help and advise if a brand new white belt asks for help or does something that could get them or their partner injured…bringing in the professor/coach is sound advice and I appreciate you mentioning that in your comment! Man... I should have watched this before my first open roll last week. I am recently a smaller guy after losing 60 pounds and everyone was much bigger. I went WAY to white belt hard. I felt it after the class was over. I have never done that before and it made sense that it was like some sort of instinct that kicked in. I did not want someone on top of me, or tapping me. I should have just moved slower and talked. But Noone was talking to me either during the rolls. I DID get compliments from the Coach on a close pass I made on an upper belt. Thanks for the video it really helped explain a few things.

As I’ve had several years of experience teaching junior belts in self defense, I’m going to need to bite my tongue and shut the h3ll up cuz I know some joint locks but most while standing and more traditional Japanese styles - NOT BJJ! That said, I was well into a place where we’re all there to learn/help each other and not kill one another so I’m planning on learning with an open mind across the board. Looking forward to wiping my slate clean and starting from square one in a new martial art (particularly a practice that will supplement what I’ve already learned). These are great videos. I too think that is good and legit pining and holding them, to get a good control before attacking, is essencial. Pacing the match too, breading, etc. I m Not a promoter of in guard submission attempts, but if you are caught by a deep triangle, and is too late for posture etc, you can try a desperado move like “amassa pão” some times it works. I don’t know what is a can opener, but if is legal is ok. Neck crunks, panturrilhas (don’t know the name in English) etc are part of the game too, bitching as they are...

Man Unfiltered think like this: 1st he didn’t win too and he was bigger and stronger. If I cant frame before de Kesa-gata me is fully on, the chances of escape gow down drastically, if he as control of your lose arm than the only way is escape by the back is worse. That is a tricky pin... remember he could attack your harm 2 diferentes ways and he couldn’, If it was me look to it almost like a win. Helio gracie style! If I don’t tap you don’t win. Rickson gracie “if a smaller person can hold dawn a bigger one for some minutes until the police comes is a big big victory” . It’s the half full half empty type of dilema. I got submitted in kesa-gata many times and different ways. Once with a neck crank. Sorry for the English hope you get the point. Keep strong 💪

With respect, every school is different when it comes to white belts coaching. The school I attend takes it on a case by case basis. I'm a fourth stripe white belt, currently involved in the gracie fundamentals/intermediate sport jiu jitsu programs in my school. Our school is a gracie garage, not a CTC. I think with us, it depends on the white belt. If they've been around long enough and show that they know what they're talking about (when it comes to fundamentals only) then they can coach the new guys a little bit. I'm the senior most white belt at our school (been in Jiu Jitsu for just over three years) and have become the one they send new guys to. The senior belts have told the new guys right in front of me that they "were in good hands". I've got 34 years of martial arts training under my belt, two black belts out of five styles that I've studied (including BJJ) and have experience with teaching. I'm one of the few men that the ladies will roll with because I have more control over my body and they know I won't smash them. Make no mistake. I'm not some awesome BJJ practitioner. I still suck, but at least I don't hurt them. Even the purple belt coach at fundamentals will look to me once in a great while when she's having a brain fart to see if what she was doing is correct. From 1-3 stripe, I felt REALLY uncomfortable with giving ANY advice, because I felt like I wasn't knowledgeable enough to do it. But once I got my fourth stripe, the head coach pulled me to the side and told me that I'm basically breathing on blue belt because of what he's seen and my experience. I just need to roll more with bigger guys to build up that pressure tolerance (I myself am 6'4, 225 and am bigger than most of the folks in intermediate). In fundamentals, if I'm instructing a new guy and one of the coaches come up, I shut my mouth and let them speak. Whatever they say goes, period. But it goes without saying that in intermediate, I keep my mouth shut unless it's to ask questions. If I talk during rolls, it's with someone junior to me, and that's only if they're obviously struggling...otherwise I'm just giving them words of encouragement, because let's face it, we could all use that.

As a judo guy i find the idea of not coaching as weird.. Like Im an experienced white belt and even purple belts seldom give me advise.. I think BJJ needs to have more communication when rolling. Maybe its just people egos that are the problem

I guess further more. I'm saying this culture carrys onto white belts not being able to coach when they can.. if a guy is on his knees leaning over my guard open for a scissor I need to explain how a good base works.. i don't think its healthy to be in an environment where that can be seen as arrogant or a know it all attitude. Giving advise is relative to skill level, even within belt class
@midlifebjj4 жыл бұрын
I think it’s that the coaches feel you may be telling the person a technique or position etc...but may actually be missing a key step or instruction and inadvertently cause more damage than good. Again, situations and people are different. Maybe you’re a fast learner...and know exactly how to help while another white belt may have no clue but still offer up advice (albeit poor advice)....because of this - the coach / professor would have to be consistent with the rules....just a thought but what do I know....I’m just a blue belt...😂😂😂

What’s your opinion on me telling my partner mid roll to slightly adjust their choke? I’ve had 2 situations where my partner caught me in good chokes but was just doing one tiny thing wrong and couldn’t finish it because of that, I tell them the tiny adjustment that makes me tap to help them understand what wasn’t working
@midlifebjj Жыл бұрын
If it were me (at purple) - I’d try to escape the move before I helped the person adjust the choke. Why?: because I’m learning BJJ as well - and there may be a situation (competition, street or simply another day on the mats) where the same thing could happen…so I’d want the practice of escaping chokes…(albeit weak chokes)…but it’ll get me into the habit of escaping. As I roll, I want to get reps in…if I stop to adjust my partners choke, I’ve cheated myself out of a rep. Once the roll is over, I’d definitely put myself back into the same position with my opponent to show them what they did wrong…it’s not as “in the moment” for my opponent, but I’ve covered my rep by not stopping and helped my opponent for their next roll. So I’d say between white and purple, practice your escapes…now if you’re a brown or black belt - do what you want…I can’t speak from those levels😊….hope this helps and this is just my opinion!

Was told I'd be paired up w my buddy who going to compete that weekend in the next round so I decided to just chill and coast in my guard for the current one. Wrong decision! I was just chilling and smiling at the guy for 4 minutes since I have pretty decent guard retention when resting. I think it depends HOW the white belt is giving advice. If its a striped white belt who is being humble, trying to sharing information, and with the caveat "make sure you ask the teacher so I'm not telling you the wrong thing" then I don't see a problem. But if it's their first day and they're tutoring you with that "I'm the teacher" vibe and think they know what they're talking about, then that's super annoying

I don't understand the don't choke while in the guard thing. Is it just risky? Is it not allowed within the rules? I'm looking at joining at jj gym and trying to get an idea beforehand. We don't use "the guard" term in judo and sambo, but doing a choke or strangulation while in guard is difficult but works.

It’s risky. A decent BJJ practitioner can control the distance, sweep their opponent, or arm bar them…I just rolled with a guy who wanted to try BJJ out…showed him a few things…concept, guard, sweeps, etc…basics…he’s jacked-much bigger than me…he wanted to roll….so we did…during one of the rolls, he was in my guard - reached in to choke me with his forearm…on his feet with all his weight…I just used my hips to extend him away…as he continued to pressure, I tried to arm bar him…dude just curled me…so I swept him…pressure the lungs for the final tap…it’s worth noting that I was wearing a Gi and he wasn’t…he said he was going to sign up…we’ll see..hope he does…he’ll be an incredible opponent in a few months.

I don't coach white belts... But is it wrong like for ex. I am rolling with this new person.. Like is literally his /her 1st - 4th time trying out the class and while rolling I just tell them what lose guard is what half guard is... What the goal is which is mount and always grab something and don't extend your arms... Is that wrong... 🤔 Is that me coaching.... I feel like is helpful but that's just me...

No..I don't think helping is wrong...I may do a remake of this video. I don't want people thinking that helping is wrong...I was more thinking of actual coaching...sometimes you'll hear white belts trying to actually coach folks while rolling...

I liked the video but stalling is not a jerk move. When somebody is stalling on me I take it as a compliment and if I can't get out, then damn! I gotta tip my hat to my partner and deal better with it next time.

Glad you watched And liked it...I get what you’re saying but hear me out...if someone stalls for 4 minutes in a 5 minute roll…. No one is learning because no one is moving. If that does happen and I can’t get out...it’s on me to follow up with instructor later to ask what I was doing wrong…but stalling simply because you’ve got somebody stuck doesn’t help anyone progress…it’s okay to be strategic and stall for a short time…just my opinion…..Thanks for commenting 🙏👊

Respectfully disagree about pinning. I may get scarf hold, want to get the arm bar, but need to wear him out. If he hates it that much, he can tap. Maybe I’m wrong but it seems to me that waiting to find an opening is better than flailing around just for the heck of it.

mike harvey so I agree with you...if you are waiting to catch a submission...what I meant to explain in the video (may have explained it wrong) is that if you are holding a position simply because you’re smoked and you’re waiting for the clock to run down...so in my opinion, two very different reasons to hold a position. the problem with the first thing, I think of white belts as button mashers, you have to keep trying anything you can because you know nothing.

Absolutely...not saying these are wrong - I did some of these things too....survival.
@hydrpx44843 жыл бұрын
@@midlifebjj what i was trying to say is, if you keep mashing the buttons sooner or later you will do a combo, maybe you get into a position to do a armbar or you sweep the person without knowing how to sweep, and that encourages you into keep going, than you learn to pace yourself. i studied boxing and being frustrated because someone was beating me made me go harder and use up more energy. as I learned more the Frustration went away because i didn't feel so clueless

Never understood the whole white belts can’t teach white belts (striped) like I had a higher white belt ask me for advice or what’s my game plan in mount then proceeded to show them got called out by a brown belt I was like sure bud 🤔 1. just feels rude to say go ask a higher belt almost like you don’t wanna give away your “secret tactics” 2. I always believed no matter what anyone can teach you something because they have a different perspective, game plan, build, etc. 3. I believe it’s sad that brown belt thinks so closed minded that you can’t learn something from a white belt even if they are a wrestler Idk what y’all think ? (and no I wasn’t full on drilling having a mini private with them just explaining and demonstrated them what I do since they were a visual person)
@midlifebjj Жыл бұрын
I think it just depends on the situation. My issue is that white belts may miss the small details that are only acquired through years on the mats. So they (unknowingly) pass on and teach a less effective/efficient method…again, this depends on the situation. Appreciate your perspective and comment. 🙏

@@midlifebjj very true I’ve gotten bad advice as well from others but it was simply like I just keep my hips low and knees tight to keep the mount better and my go to submission from there. I always add the whole disclaimer of this is “my” thing doesn’t mean it’s the best for you or the right way I’d just ask the teacher.

@@midlifebjj at our club doing that is encouraged for the brand new people. For the rest we try and figure it out together. Like once we did a flow. I was with the brand new guy. Told him all you have to do is get past the legs when you on top. That helped him alot

I’m guilty of this. Only those very new and mostly when they get frustrated. I will say something like “breath”, “ relax” or tell them to think about where they are and what they want to do. The most I’ll do is say “you’re in my guard. You want to get out of my guard” or “don’t panic, I’ve got you in side control, you want to regain guard” That’s the most I do and it’s only when rolling with someone in their first month. I’m very careful not to screw them up. I’m also regularly paired up with the brand new guys. I think they trust me not to cause too much damage.

My friend...I still do this...I can’t help myself...if someone is struggling and they are new...I want to help. I think it’s difficult because we’ve been through it and know how frustrating it is....the other day I was sitting against the wall, waiting on the next roll....I was watching my professor as he focused on the folks rolling... I don’t coach from the sidelines...not my responsibility + I’m not skilled enough. BUT - I do watch the rolls carefully for my benefit. As I watched, I saw a blue belt rolling with a purple and noticed a few mistakes the blue was making....that the purple capitalized on. I thought to myself how frustrating it must be for the professor to see the mistakes because he’s been through all of it....plus I noticed that when he rolls, he doesn’t coach while rolling.Afterwards he may drop some knowledge on mistakes made but not during the roll (usually) - I’m going to (try) and stop coaching during a roll...I’ve cut back but the desire to help surfaces every now and again....as always, Scott- appreciate your support on this channel! Be well🙏 PS: stop by for a visit - it’d be awesome to get some rolls in with you!

I don't think it's wrong to share the broad strokes as a white belt. Make the new person feel comfortable. Someone needs to tell you the school culture. I wouldn't try to teach but, "breathe", "take it easy" and "coach hates it if you do..." are things I feel comfortable sharing.

Completely wrong about choking from the guard, but I know its embedded in your mental conditioning from early on. My son had 3yrs Judo prior to starting BJJ so he has a great cross collar choke. His brown belt instructor dared him to try cross collar so he did and choked him lights out (was not intentional). The instructor went off with the fairies and dreamed he got the armbar. As they did privates together the instructor asked my son to go over it with him and again and again the instructor could not counter his cross lapel. He brought it up in the next class and had all the higher belts attempt to counter my sons cross lapel but at first they couldn't. When a way out was finally found my son showed them the only way out was putting themselves in a very compromised position. Needless to say the instructor no longer teaches his students that old chestnut all thanks to a 1 stripe white belt. And yes it was brought up and replicated with the head of that BJJ branch and has been taken under deliberation, no response has ever come back but I have seen other members of this club dropping that teaching now so I assume he's been going over it with some of his best teachers and they're seeing the problem

Competition or self defense? To be honest, I’ve had tight chokes put on from the guard but there are ways around it (in self defense)....I’m not knocking your son or instructor...why don’t you send me a video of that cross collar choke... would love to take a look at it..was your son much larger than the instructor? There are anomalies but I have yet to see this and to see a white belt do this to a brown belt..:I’m not buying it, man...can you send a video. You can blame it on mental condition but that mental conditioning stems from an art that’s older than the both of us...so you’ll have to excuse the skepticism generated due to a random YT comment claiming that a 1 stripe white belt choked out a BJJ brown belt. I trust you can see where I’m coming from.

@@midlifebjj lol they advocate as a self-defence but its completely sport. My son hasn't trained for a while now and has never competed, probably why he is still a 1 stripe white belt lol. The gym where he was training though was extremely competitive and had some tough players. Yea he was bigger than the main coach but other guys bigger than my son in the gym. Im not a BJJ player to know the intricacies but I think its got to do with shifting his hip to one side and bearing down weight with one elbow, also trapping the leg so the counter is stopped before its even implemented. Trying to prepare for counter before hes even attempted the cross lapel puts the person in guard off base/game and my son would take advantage of that. The guys eventually adapted to it like you say, but they no longer teach to let people cross collar them without first looking at the person's body positioning. Ill chat my son and reply to you tonight after he's finished work.

I have to say man I disagree with you on a white belt coaching another new white belt. Yes maybe you shouldn’t coach them whole rolling. But for example say a white belt is simply helping a brand new person by explaining to them how to pumble during a warm up or something like that I don’t see an issue with that. Or explaining to them how to do certain little things as long as they are teaching them the correct way ive never understood what the big deal was.

Fair enough...a white belt that has been training for 1 month is more advanced a than the person that just put their belt on for the first class---so sure, in cases where a white belt can help - why not...Who am I to tell anyone what to do and...heck, most of these things I've done myself...its why I make these videos - to try and help others avoid my mistakes....I'm always learning though and I agree with your point.
