Tessa, do the spray painted hydrangeas drop their petals or does the paint help hold them?
@gardenpartystudio
@gardenpartystudio 4 күн бұрын
I don’t think the paint has much effect on holding them together. The hydrangea blooms are already quite sturdy since they were first allowed to dry on the plant. A bloom cut when already brown and papery is much more durable than a one that is cut when in the soft white stage.

Absolutely beautiful Tessa! I love that you can reuse next year or compost the lot. Can I ask What hydrangea that is?

Thank you, and certainly! The hydrangea is Limelight! Other cultivars that would work are Little lime, Phantom, Strawberry Vanilla, or Tardiva. All the paniculatas.

Well done Tessa! I am a huge advocate for foraged Christmas decor. Your in situ rose covered arch absolutely makes a perfect armature for your garland. BTW... your architecture is beyond charming as it looks to be an English inspired 50's cottage with great proportions and wonderfully scaled windows. No doubt you will enjoy years of excitement developing your home and garden to your vision. 💚

You’re exactly right on dating the house! 1951, and I agree, I think there’s a little bit of English cottage influence on what is essentially a ranch meets cape-cod structure. The charm is what drew us to the house immediately. In my book, generally the older, the better.

Charming little helper😊. He's a star. It's lovely to plan a succession of plants and planters for our darker months and very sensible to use perennial plants as sustainable options. Very handy links, especially the books. I love suggestions from fellow gardeners. Can I suggest " The gardens of Arne Maynard", a hefty beautiful book, also " Mein Ruys the mother of Modernist Gardens". Enjoy!

I'm designing my front yard now in a cottage garden style and this was helpful. I noticed you didn't place any plants on the border of the walkway, opting for lawn I presume instead. I'm going back and forth on this as well.
@gardenpartystudio
@gardenpartystudio 25 күн бұрын
It all depends on the proportion of the space! I think a bordered walkway can work and be very fun in certain situations, such as a symmetrical space with a central walk, but it would have made an awkward lawn shape on the right side for mine. I wanted a piece of that feeling though, so that’s the reason for the arc-shaped bed that spans the outer part of the walkway.

I'll have to do a video where I talk more generally about design plans for the front of the house. Truth is that we are chipping away a bit at a time and the "whole thing" is not complete the way we'd like it. :) Regarding the windows... great question. Our house is quite close to the street and having a bit of green in front of the lower portion of the window actually really improves the experience from inside the house.

Thank you so much for the kiss of death tip! I have been fighting creeping bellflower for years! It's impossible to pull out because it grows very deep add creates a super highway of roots. If you pull it and leave any of the roots it creates an army of more plants. It's in a perennial border and I don't want to kill my other plants. I've tried so many things put this sounds like the way to go. Praying this works! 🙏🤞💚

Really lovely garden at Chanticleer. I'm green with envy. I need a teacup fountain. So whimsical :) Over time I'm learning better on how to have plants suit the space: being willing to remove plants that don't work either because they can't thrive where they are or because they just look wrong--too tall, or too short, or too sprawling. I'd say it probably took about four years of hard work before any of the neighbors even noticed the improvements and I still have problem areas, bad erosion, poison ivy, etc. Sometimes I feel discouraged, but I try to build on my successes and gradually adopt neglected areas.
@gardenpartystudio
@gardenpartystudio 2 ай бұрын
Haha - me too! Let's book those trips to Florence to pick one out! :) I think being willing to remove is one of the very hardest lessons as a gardener... after all, you went to the effort to put it there, right? But making thoughtful edits when you find things aren't working is the only way to get to a better result! And boy, I have untouched areas too... they just don't make the videos.

Thank you for the very thorough explanation of the hanging basket. I have a large tree basket that i use like this every year. Experimenting with it every year till i get it just right. We took it down this year to stain our deck. My niece wanted to know where it got to. Enjoyed your thoughts on the empty pots. I actually did that this year with large ceramic pots and got compliment on just the pots. Quite frankly, I just didn’t get around to planting anything in them but they look pretty all on their own. Chanticleer is one of my favorite gardens. I too, was inspired by the pots of blooms and have the pond dye to give this a try. Really enjoyed the secrets to Chanticleer’s Gardens.

@botanicaltreasures2408

My sympathy. I have more invasives than I care to count. The prettiest invasive on the property are the mimosas, but they grow way too fast and were crowding out my conifers. I also have tons of native oak and gum tree saplings that would take over the neighborhood and turn it into a forest given half a chance. However the worst thing of all is this year I have a new invasive plant called dodder or love vine. It is a parasitic plant that looks like orange string--distantly related to morning glory. It destroyed a stand of goldenrod before they could bloom. This dodder especially seems to like anything in the aster family. When I looked up how to control dodder some people suggested burning it, but since I live in a highly populous neighborhood, I'm not going to use that method. Frost also kills it but the seeds survive in the soil--I think I accidentally spread some just by walking on it last year . I plan to cut away the dead host plants . It will be less of a problem once it frosts. Next year I want to put in some plants dodder can't parasitize. I wonder if goats or chicken eat dodder--not that my neighborhood allows either.
@gardenpartystudio
@gardenpartystudio 3 ай бұрын
Oh no! I had that a few years back... hideous thing! I'd totally forgotten about the experience until right now. I remember that I acted fast and it did not come back as a recurrent problem in future seasons. I think your plan is a good one. Mulch well in that area so no light is getting to the soil for germination.
