LOL, Criterion's bad timing, 2 weeks after this was posted she was accused of pretty serious stuff, including facilitating rape on set.

That's a genius form of directing, wow! Having Keith dislike the character he's playing results in Tom being a self-hating narcissist which is integral to the character. Also correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Keith write I'm Easy for Shelley Plimpton? He met her while they were performing in Hair on Broadway and they had an affair that resulted in the birth of their daughter Martha.

I love her podcast. Love her voice. I read her excellent book on Howard Hughes before I knew who she was. Came across her podcast when I'd be searching for specific actresses.

The real powerful part about this film that you don't realise until second viewing is that none of the people interviewed ever meet each other. The film itself is their meeting place.

Devil in a Blue Dress is wonderful (and in every scene he's in Don Cheadle steals the film from Denzel). Very sad that it didn't do well enough for Washington and Carl Franklin to do more Walter Moseley/Easy Rawlins adaptations. (ADDENDA: If I looked like Jeremy Pope, I'd consider going shirtless also!)

Beauty, Sex, Drugs, Dance, Music, Show Biz, Success, Death. That’s the “jazz” in All That Jazz. I’m no actor, but it made a huge impact on my teenage self in the late 70s. IDK why it’s all but forgotten now, either.

Glad to see someone choosing something like Love & Basketball. Usually people pick something titled ‘Leaves On The Sidewalk’ and it’s about an unknown 24 hour battle that started outside of a laundromat in a small village in Kyrgyzstan and it all began because a soldier of the militia that ran the town had his clothes from the dryer taken out and put to the side so someone else could use it and it won the Croatian version of an Oscar but the sole Oscar win went to the supporting actor/actress that was the laundromat owner that gave whatever supplies from the broom closet was needed for the protagonist to organize the laundromat patrons to prepare for the incoming militia counterattack, and the supporting actor/actress somehow possesses knowledge of how to make cleaning supply bombs because they were secretly trained as a kid to make bombs by their father when they were a kid because their father was the one who started the militia from an idea spawned during dinner time that he was done with the rules of the village and someone needed to make changes but the kid grew up to see the bigotry in their household and broke away to support theirselves by inheriting the laundromat left to them by the previous caretaker that gave them an opportunity to be the coin collector and lint trap cleaner. Sometimes we just want to see someone pull Scary Movie 2 off the shelf🤷🏾♂️

It’s beautifully presented but I’d argue it’s not essential unless you’re a huge Criterion fan or, perhaps moreso, you want a huge collection of 40 films you’ve either not seen or don’t own. So, for a gift for someone eager to discover countless classics or someone who doesn’t want to buy all the original editions it’s an overly expensive but worthy purchase. But if you’ve already got all the films included I have to ask why … … so why?
