Hi Seth, I just passed my private pilot check ride over the weekend. The examiner kept asking me “who told you that?” during the oral portion. He said I had a much deeper comprehension and preparation than his average private pilot candidate. Much credit goes to you and your channel, so thank you!!

If flight hours can be considered as compensation, wouldn't the fix around that be to simply not log those hours?
@SethLakeDPE
@SethLakeDPE 7 күн бұрын
That is a good perception on your part but simply being to willing to move passengers for compensation is illegal. You don't actually have to do it. This is a very gray area but the FAA has taken actions against pilots who showed simple intent but never actually flew anyone.

Really appreciate this series! Thank you. It appears to be difficult to get a DPE to talk to you and give you insight into what to expect. I greatly appreciate your perspective and I’ve learned things not conveyed by my instructor and at least one thing I’ve been instructed in error.

I just draw lines on my map, with little acronyms. Usually 3, for VFR flights. One for “WX” (approx 30nm out) One for “TOD” (found by the long-touch method you describe, adjusted as necessary) One 10nm out to remind me to request/change to tower & put ground in standby, noted as “T/GS”

Taking a checkride is like playing a video game while someone has a gun to your head
@SethLakeDPE
@SethLakeDPE 10 күн бұрын
Though check rides can indeed feel stressful, it's important to remember that safety is always the highest priority. Unlike the high-stakes scenario you described, a check ride is designed to ensure that all pilots meet the rigorous standards required for safe flying. The examiner is there not just to assess, but also to help reinforce these standards. You wouldn't be there unless your instructor thought you were ready.

Failed my ppl checkride, the HSI failed, instead of giving me a discontinue, failed me because I wasnt proficient enough using the compass. Fair enough, but DPE wouldn’t let me continue with maneuvers or use ForeFlight or the gps, which was a bummer so I basically had to redo everything. I took it as Iesson learned kind of thing.

Seth thanks for the video. Is there an official (from FAA or something like that) way to specifically find recurring AD’s? Or do I just need to look at them all for my engine, airframe, and propeller and read what the required action says?
@SethLakeDPE
@SethLakeDPE 11 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, DRS is the only "official" tool to use for ADs, that I know of. It's not that user friendly and doesn't offer a easy way to search for reoccurring ADs for your specific aircraft. One reason, is ADs are very specific for your individual aircraft and can even vary between aircraft that are the same make and model since they can be specific to accessories. My best advice is to find a good A&P who can do thorough AD research on your specific aircraft. Fortunately they should only have to do that once, then on subsequent annuals it's a simple lookup to see if any new ADs have come up since the last annual.

A DPE can “fail” your EFB at any time, so you better have an iron-clad backup. A lot of pilots get in trouble by over-relying on ForeFlight and their iPad. Children of the Magenta Line is NOT a compliment.
@SethLakeDPE

You're correct, every pilot should have a backup. I fly with two iPads. You could also use an iPhone as a backup.

After just your first sentence I knew it was all worth ignoring. FACT CHECK: “Aviation Supplies & Academics (ASA) publishes the Federal Aviation Regulations/Aeronautical Information Manual (FAR/AIM). The FAR/AIM is a publication from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that has been the industry's standard regulatory reference since 1940.” Why listen to anything else you say when your first line is inaccurate? Click-bait lead line. Who publishes it is irrelevant. The FAA produces them and manages them.

Amazing content! I’m currently at step 0 (waiting for my medical exam to make sure I can fly from a health standpoint) and starting to dip my toe into the material I’ll need to learn to earn certifications. This scenario-based learning is very helpful for not just memorizing information but putting deeper context behind it. Thank you for a great video. I've been using ForeFlight for about a year now and just learned a few new things! Also, I actually had my iPad overheat during the first approach of my instrument checkride. After a brief moment of panic, as it had never happened to me before, I pulled out my phone and continued the approach, putting the ipad into a shaded spot. By the time we got to the next approach, it was working again and gave me no further issues. It CAN happen

DPEs in my area refuse to talk to us instructors after tests. I know it’s not true for all areas. I wish all DPEs were more like you and other good DPEs. I do wish DPEs at least acknowledge that check ride failures end careers. I know several CFIs at my school that all have been told by the airlines that they’ll never fly for them. They all have between 2-5 failures.
@SethLakeDPE
@SethLakeDPE 12 күн бұрын
I'll stand by my statement that failures alone will not keep you from flying at the airlines. It all depends on the whole of your application. I'm not saying failures aren't a issue at all, but I know several people at legacy airlines with multiple failures.

47:15 There are trade offs. Full power produces more heat to melt ice faster, but at a greater risk of detonation, especially near sea level on a hot day. Ideally, you would use carb heat at somewhat reduced power, but immediately after a period of full power. The heat capacity of the exhaust headers stores and releases heat for a significant period of time, while the reduced power setting eliminates the risk of detonation from high-temperature intake charge air. At altitude, the reduced air temperature and density reduces detonation risk even at wide open throttle.
@SethLakeDPE
@SethLakeDPE 12 күн бұрын
Bringing up detonation is a good point. Pulling the carb heat in the downwind would normally be good since the power should be around 50% at that point.
