take away the name, the label, the brand, mix these images with that of an unknown photographer, and see if you can still really see something in his photos.

I'm all for every photographer doing their own thing which is great but for me Martin Parr is one of the most overrated colour photographers in history. I can understand people loving his work. But there's so much talent out there that never gets noticed. Parr is a great photographer and I like his black and white images but his colour work is overrated . Yet I respect his work. The same with music artists I don’t like, I still respect them for doing their thing.

Very insightful. A good photograph (and a good photographer) can serve several purposes. I think Parr's legitimacy within Magnum was further validated when he was selected President of the cooperative/agency. The English was on the mark. Thank you.

It’s good that you have the self awareness to recognize when something may need to be reset. It’s better to do something because you love to do it rather than as something you’re required to do. This should be fun rather than “work”. Maybe every two weeks should be every month or every 3 weeks?

I am very much an introvert, but I try to push through my fears and every time I have it has been so gratifying, the same with my very first time of asking a lady if I could photograph her and she was thrilled so it was a really great positive experience for me! I enjoy both candid photos as well as asking to photograph strangers. Great video sharing your fears and how you overcome them😀

Same here, Sharon! I think it's good to have a good mix for candid and "posed" photos - it helps me tell a better story, plus now I really enjoying getting to know people as part of my process. Thanks for sharing about your experience :)
@EricGross Жыл бұрын
Street photographers always have a choice. They get take the risk and take the pic of someone without their permission or they can ask permission. Both scenarios have their advantages and disadvantages. Many people do really resent having their pic taken by a stranger and I don't know if "my" preferences should dominate in that situation.
@camali_ch Жыл бұрын
Definitely! It's important for each photographer to define their philosophy and do their work as truthfully to it as possible. I don't necessarily think there's a right way or wrong way to either approach.

Really enjoyed this. I'm in a discovery phase currently and the concept of planting your feet and drifting around finding a composition that finally clicks is really appealing. Would be interesting to see how this method would translate to less visually stimulating locales. Bali a force of nature.
@camali_ch Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Brennen! Indeed, Bali is special - though, at the same time, cursed with many clichés. I might have to share a bit over my method on a different video, though the overall goal is to heighten presence and - specially during the discovery phase - try not to focus too much about what it is in front of the camera and rather focus on shapes/colors/patterns/etc. Hope that makes a bit of sense!
@robinredbeard Жыл бұрын
Although it is project forced by situation, I'm pretty much restricting to hiking with my camera in one nearby park, though it is a big park. What I have found is that I can take my camera to the same location over and over and never take the same photo. A location is ever-changing and radically different photos can be captured from that one spot. In addition, familiarity with a place creates a different relationship with that place than when you first encountered it. You see more, you know its moods. For me, that has translated into photos that have become richer, deeper, and more intimate in their meaning. This all makes the whole experience of photography in this area a meaningful and joy-producing activity for me.
@camali_ch Жыл бұрын
That's beautiful, Robin! Thanks for sharing :) I like how you speak about developing a relationship with the place you take photos in - definitely takes things into another level.

This video got me thinking about the meaning of a photograph and, more specifically, the meaning for my photographs. What ideas are worthy of a great photo? A photo can be very abstract. What's the story then when all there is is shape, tone, and color? So, your video brought these and up lots of other questions and that's always a good thing. Thanks very much. And BTW, your english is precise and elegant. No need to worry about that.

A songwriter sometimes tries to convey the feeling and emotion of an actual event, real or imagined. Sometimes just a general human emotion, love for example, or to rouse people to recognise an injustice. But once done, it will be misinterpreted in a thousand different ways. How much more with photography ? But in the end, if people appreciate the work, that's enough.
@camali_ch Жыл бұрын
Nowadays I'm trying to conform myself with me being the one appreciating my own work. I tend to forget that!

I have studied the History of Writing for many years and many people ask, when did writing begin?Most think it did around 3200BC in Mesopotamia but I believe it started in the caves in Spain and France and elsewhere. Those painters were trying to convey an idea, a meaning, a story before they had an alphabet. The first Sumerian writing was pictorial, as was Egyptian hieroglyphs. Well photography is the same, conveying an idea, a meaning or a story. Photography moist definitely is a language, but like languages off the world we sometimes have to understand the language techniques to understand what the photographer is trying to say.
@camali_ch Жыл бұрын
So interesting what you say! In a way, it kinda makes me feel as if Photography is connected to those proto-writing systems, more than the modern ones.

It never ceases to disappoint me that so many comments seek to denigrate those trying to inform and educate. Yes, this is knowledge that the more expert will already be aware of but I would guess that it’s us not the target audience. That said, there is always something to learn from every presentation, even if it’s just something about oneself. Well done Sergio 👏

Sergio, you are simply expressing your imagination. The photos are in you, not out there. The work, the practice is an inside job, it's improving your connection with your inner world. The physical act of photography beyond understanding formal qualities is one of letting go, the rest takes care of itself. You'll attract visually the median of the quality of your thoughts.
@camali_ch Жыл бұрын
Thanks for such an insightful comment, Dan! The "letting go" part is something I just recently began cultivating in my practice and it's changing my whole perspective on Photography and creativity in general.
@DanScott1 Жыл бұрын
@@camali_ch Allowing or letting go is the lynchpin to greater images appearing before you. Read or listen to something that makes you feel free and full of creative energy, then go out and explore your surroundings for the fun of it with camera in hand, and the light how you want it, just noticing your thoughts about what you notice around you.. and if something visually gets your attention, make a picture of it. Thats why Bresson danced tip-toe in the street, the lightness of his thoughts lifted him, literally! He knew his frequency of attraction to great photos. You are finding yours.
