This video got me thinking about the meaning of a photograph and, more specifically, the meaning for my photographs. What ideas are worthy of a great photo? A photo can be very abstract. What's the story then when all there is is shape, tone, and color? So, your video brought these and up lots of other questions and that's always a good thing. Thanks very much. And BTW, your english is precise and elegant. No need to worry about that.

Very insightful. A good photograph (and a good photographer) can serve several purposes. I think Parr's legitimacy within Magnum was further validated when he was selected President of the cooperative/agency. The English was on the mark. Thank you.

Interesting! I actually didn't know he was president - for some reason I assumed he wasn't a big fan of Magnum in general.

People have to remember that "serious" photography was exclusively associated with black and white. Colour was for family snaps and advertising. Photographers who worked in colour, like William Eggleston, faced criticism from art journals that his images were shallow and unimportant. Martin Parr realised the potential of colour photography, using wedding technique (hand held medium format camera, colour negative film, flash) to explore the social landscape. In 2023 the debate seems like ancient history, but the epic/heroic style associated with Magnum wasn't giving in to "snap shot" photography without a fight.

Very interesting. I recognized many of Parr's photos, but I didn't know him by name. Neither is his relationship with Magnum. For the rest your English is excellent y parafraseando a la folclorica "all que le guste que se subscriba y al que no, que no se subscriba". Yo me subscribo.

The thing they stand with to me with magnums photos is the tight framing. Even up close there’s a ‘a lot’ in a small space. They never seem to be wide and empty

There's definitely a "style" to the type of photos I see from Magnum. I like it, though. What about you?

@@camali_ch KZbin totally butchered my spelling lol. It was supposed to say “that stands out to me with magnum’s photos…”…I like both, magnum and parr, both are so unique and really have a standout to their style. Magnum really makes me think about solid to the core, top notch classic photography while Parr is all in, no punches pulled type of style. Just harsh and to the point. Great video on your part, thanks for sharing it with us!

Parr was accused of elitism and looking down at his subjects from a privileged upper class viewpoint. We are laughing AT the subjects in his photos not with.. their dress, their food, their taste. It’s a glimpse of the working class thru a bourgeois lens. And you know what? It kind of is. But it also shows a world many of us don’t see. Also his aesthetic is amazing, his style is one of the most recognizable in the history of photography. And, he’s one of my favorite. ❤

He's definitely controversial! I do remember hearing an interview in which he said how people were actually excited about appearing in one of the shows he made - I think back in the 90's - and even though a few were not happy with how they were depicted, there were still a lot who were thrilled.

shows the bourgeois bias of Art milieux, truer regarding the public than the artists in my opinion. I don't see any mépris de classe in Martin Parr work, but more a depiction of consumerism, mass tourism, and yes, popular classes, proletarians. we have this great show in French, from the Belgian tv, called Strip Tease, check it out.

It’s a great video but you kind of talked off a cliff. It’s cool if that’s your style but as English speakers we’re taught or it’s normal to have a balance and softer conclusion.

I'm all for every photographer doing their own thing which is great but for me Martin Parr is one of the most overrated colour photographers in history. I can understand people loving his work. But there's so much talent out there that never gets noticed. Parr is a great photographer and I like his black and white images but his colour work is overrated . Yet I respect his work. The same with music artists I don’t like, I still respect them for doing their thing.
