In Faversham there is a gauged arch of a similar shape. It rests on an old wooden frame. When the brickwork above can clearly hold itself in place it appears that the arch has nothing to do but hold itself. The use of a joggle in the joint would help it. I think this would have been a good place to incorporate some sort of additional help. A brave video to post but a very good one for all those that care about their work .

Distant memory of the classroom/workshop. Is the setting out board called a "Tracing Board?" I can remember the plywood board painted white and we would set out arches etc. Bricklayers have forgotten how to use the board but stone masons still use them. Your video showed how it not only speeds up the process but eliminates small, un-sightly cuts.

I’ve bricklayers due to start on site and I can’t seem to wrap my head around brick coordinating sizes ie CO-, CO and CO+.. I have the charts etc but just can’t seem to fully understand it and where each applies to. Would appreciate if you would be willing to explain over video/ skype? Thanks very much and apologies for the strange question ha

Are the backing panels screwed to timber battens, Rob? Is there a way you could remove the backer board and work horizontally, lay all the slips so you dont need packers/spacers, and then bond and screw the panels back onto the framework behind once the slips have set?

Another great job, Rob. I'll be using a similar feature on the Tiny Barn project so watching with interest. Is the backer board a cement based board? Why do you prefer to use flexible tile adhesive? When grouting against the oak, how will it be sealed (as the oak is likely to expand/contract)?
@robsonger1
@robsonger1 Ай бұрын
yes, it's a cement board. A flexible adhesive would allow thermal movement in the heat of summer and contraction in the colder months. The seal I put around the perimeter should hopefully prevent moisture from entering behind the board.

A standard set tile adhesive would be easier to stick them on I'd imagine. I have done a few kitchen decor walls with them, they can be very varied in sizes and drive you crazy. I used to use 10mm spacers or cut down door stop into small blocks but you usually need some wedges etc to take up the differences.

Hi Craig, we kept the brick slips dry throughout the summer when they were first cut so that they would be easier to lay, but after I tried to apply the adhesive directly to the back of the brick I noticed it just rolled off the surface and had no adhesion whatsoever, it was a layer of dust that laid on the brick. So I looked at the first ones that were already placed in the panel and they came off with very little effort. After dipping them they had a much better bond, so I kept with that.

John, And that is assuming they can use the lasers and strings lines constructively, and actually have the knowledge & training in the first place. Prior to retirement I had been working on schemes where I was the only Brickie, with a knowledge/experience of circular/Arch work - and I did very well financially out of that.👍😁 A lot of trowels are frightened when they leave "Stetcher bond". On one scheme the face work was Flemish bond with 3 course of plinth work, and the gangs did not have a clue, how to set it out - and they made a complete hash of it. Happy days for my gang financially. 🧱🔨👍 I suspect this " dumbing - down" will continue in all trades until we are living in pre-made "Pods" that are all made in a factory - or something like that ? Or even the combined effects of the Green lobby & environmental zealots, with their ever increasing energy/insulation targets may kill off cavity walling completely? Watch this space....
