Love your website and your work. Do you have any insight into McLaughlin's technique specifically during his Tony Williams Lifetime and Mahavishnu Orchestra phase that you can share and educate us on? There seems to be precious little analysis especially on his Lifetime playing on the Internet.

Thanks PhenComp! ...I might have made videos on this already, I'm not sure as I have made so many videos in the past that I am now re-posting lots of the older ones. The McLaughlin style isn't one that's covered that much so if I haven't that's a really great idea. 👍

If you want to play this stuff you need to work out how to produce a decent tone using his setups and strings. Impossible. He always had a terrible sound in my opinion and that makes it entirely pointless.
@CliffordMartinOnline3 күн бұрын
Thanks Jazzman, but I like John's guitar sound and playing. Making KZbin videos with a nice sound is not as easy as it might seem. A lot of work goes into making videos and I try my best. The other thing is that a lot of people like my videos and they are free. When I was learning I had to pay for everything including music school, private lessons, books, records, videos and even magazines as there was no internet at the time and music could only be learnt through paying and buying. Everything I put on here and my website I have given for free so far. Many people find that to be useful and helpful resource. 👍

@ Not criticising your video sound. Just criticising super low action, super thin strings and aggressive picking near the bridge always sounds bad. We’re never going to agree so bye and have a good day.

Question: when you play, for example, Fm over G7alt, do you think 'Fm' or 'G7alt'? The reason I'm asking is that I find thinking in another tonal center than that of the chord a bit schizophrenia-inducing and therefore always try to relate the scale notes to the chord's root. (In this case, for ex., I would want to see/hear the note F as the b7 degree of 'G', and NOT the tonic of 'F', etc.). Perhaps that's not an issue for you and you have no problem thinking "Fm" over "G7alt" (relating all the scale notes to 'F' rather than 'G')? Thank you.
@CliffordMartinOnline3 күн бұрын
Hi Wonder, thanks. I can think of this in either altered scale or as another tonality, e'g Eb Major, Db Major, but, I am really just playing what I hear. Another thing is that playing in the minor key [minor-isation/Pat Martino] avoids the cumbersome scale fingerings at a very fast tempo, so Fm over Galt works easily as it's easy to fret and make other pentatonic's from. ...I have covered this in lots of other videos because it is a subject in itself. But, when the tempo is quick there is'nt really any time to think and one just has to just play. That's why I do these videos and analyse the connections. BUT, the key is to do what you find easiest and stick with it. 👍

Yippee! Just read a comment reminding us that its John's birthday today. This lesson is more fitting than ever. Thanks Cliff for serving up another post festive whopper. Having just gubbled a couple of Statins [Chlorestrol tablets] chased down with a refreshing beverage sadly not beer. My wife thinks, this is the only whopper I need combined with modest exercise. Burger King maybe off the menu, but my fingers are flying.

Hi, thanks!..The guitar is a Taylor ns54Ce. It's an early 2006 model and probably from the first batch of the 14th fret cutaway models that Taylor produced. 👍

A superb little lesson/demo. Thanks. Many years ago I saw John, with his trio of the time, at the RNCM Manchester. I was in the front row and around ten feet away from him. There was no stage as such, so we were on the same ‘plane’, if that makes sense. I had the chance to study his hands and general performance style in some detail. He played a nylon strung instrument and sounded exactly like you do on the video. Your technique is almost identical to his. I hope you do some more in the same vein.
@CliffordMartinOnline8 күн бұрын
Thanks, Yeah, the trio with John playing the nylon string"Wechter" guitar is one of my favourite periods of Johns playing. The "Que Alegria" album. "Belo herozonte" and "Music spoken here" are all magnificent. I saw John play with Shakti a couple of times and like you I was right at the front for the first one. It was crazy, 2 hours of sheer magic. 👍
