Nice demo as always Cliff. I'll experiment around some of these ideas, especially the incorporating open strings in higher fret sequences! Thank you!

Thanks Ivon, Yeah, the open strings I find really helpful and they create a really nice sound and I also find are helpful for crossing the string smoothly.👍

Great lessons, is the first example from a Mclaughlins song or does he apply this in his music? The lines sounds so John like😊. Thnx
@CliffordMartinOnlineКүн бұрын
Thanks Dwoed!...I have taken this from the scale/fingering from John's video "This is the way I do it" and applied various variations on this. John has used the open string like this in Shakti in various guises, but, here I am just breaking it down into its most simplistic form to show what is possible so that anyone can take it away and develop it into their own style....But, this is not taken from any specific composition but just a variation on John's well known scale/fingering from his video.👍

Fascinating video! The chords you played in the video show the great potential of the guitar in 20-21st contemporary music improvisation. What app did you to orchestrate in the video? I will listen to Pat’s work.
@CliffordMartinOnline6 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks. For the short orchestral example I used "Spitfire Strings from Albion Legacy" sample library. ....Yeah, I agree, the intervallic approach is really useful for the guitar to create fresh sounding material and it really moves away from guitar cliches. 👍

Hi! Thanks for the video ! Do you have any example of Pat Martino using these forms in improvisational context ?
@CliffordMartinOnline10 күн бұрын
Hi I'm not sure if there is a specific video about these 12 Forms, But, At the end of this video I made is an intervallic example over ii V I [similar thing] kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5-cgGuVbdVrhw ....Also, there is an example by Pat himself displaying "Intervallic" playing on one of the "True Fire" videos on youtube, it is the one with the white backing and 3 screens. 👍

Your example sounds bluesy, intense and delicious. Very interesting concept, specially talking about thinking more about melody and rhythm, and harmony more as a texture than functionality. I will hear more music with this technique.

Hi there, thanks for the great video! Are these exercises related to sections from any of Boulez's pieces, or are you abstracting principles from your own analysis and drafting exercises to exemplify them?
@CliffordMartinOnlineАй бұрын
Hi Thanks, the principle was to try and make concepts/compositional devices that Boulez uses and make them work at the guitar with the plectrum as opposed to classical fingerstyle. ...This is an old video, but, I think that they were my own ideas/developmental phrases based around Blouez's deductions and compositional procedure from "The musical language of Pierre Boulez" [Cambridge Press] .The aim was to deal with and connect the awkward intervals wether 12 tone or polytonal or even permutations and see what the results would be with the plectrum. It's a fascinating subject as lots of interesting and original material can be composed, and It's a subject that I will hopefully make another more up to date video on in the future.👍

The best concert I ever saw of any style was The Mahavishnu Orchestra, composed of 11 pieces performing at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. He did this legato run starting near the nut of the guitar, and he went up the neck to the other end. It seemed like he hit every note on the guitar. I was in awe!

Thank you for enriching my day in helping to bring out the love and appreciation I have for John McLaughlin's music. Some people really do not get it and I have never really understood why. In close to 40 odd years of listening I have always been able to hear the melody. Although his playing is fast and can be challenging. However, this video has brought enormous clarity into his approach. I recently watched a concert on KZbin of him performing in the States with Shatki and that was tremendous. Incidently it was a recent concert and John is still in amazing form. I pray that we will still have him for a few more years. Amen.
@CliffordMartinOnlineАй бұрын
Thanks Simon, very kind words!... Yeah, John is still playing amazingly well. I saw a video of Shakti the other day also and they were still really tight and John was still playing like he was 20 years ago, incredible stuff, really inspiring. 👍
