Nobody knows what that notch is for any more. I have wondered if might have once been used while making cordage or if it help absorb shock while chopping but I do know it weakens the blade. I will also note that the pre 1900 knives seem to have had half tangs or less. How they stayed together when chopping wood or bone escapes me but they must have done so most of the time. The British wanted full tangs with a joined butt cap for their troops and got them. I think they are all made that way now. That is the first time I can recall seeing anyone putting a Scandi grind on a kukri. I didn't notice any distal taper either. Have fun and may God bless and keep you and yours. It is about 20 degrees F in TN for todays high.

That is a better Bowie Knife than the other one that didn't have a finger guard, but it still needs a proper pommel.

The knife you made looks nice, but a proper Bowie Knife needs a hand guard and a pommel.

Hmmm, what is the secret sauce? I'll hazard a guess at magnesium or sodium! Either way, the blade turned out really sweet, and the hamon looks gorgeous!

Question, when you melt the drill bits , does it still maintain its high carbon properties or does it reset to to be normal steel. I have always been interested in taco method , and one day would like to see if drill bit would make a good edge if properly tempered, but here your are making a whole ahh knife with it, fantastic vid.

Do you thermal cycle it like 7 some times for it to form the carbides? That's heating it up and letting it just cool down.. its what creates the real wootz pattern & makes the blade extremely hard but still some what ductile making it hard to snap or break because usually super hard = extremely brittle. Theres a guy who figured it out he uses glass & a bit of green leaves in the crucible when forming the billet.. i think the video is called the art of wootz steel or something..he was a farmer who figured it out & metallurgy specialist were completely blown away

Actual wootz steel? Color me impressed. Usually its just people making pattern welded steel and calling it wootz or Damascus.

recently watched alec steele do a canister damascus attempt with welding electrodes, in which he failed to realize that a large part of the flux is alloying material that gets added during the melt. it did not go well. would be interested to see a similar attempt with crucible steel.
