I made the mistake of not using anything on the bottom and my water was disgusting. The gravel and sand act as a filter.

Wait what is that you used to fill the tank with? Does that help the sand and the water not get cloudy? Sorry new to all this

The largemouth I have is ruthless when it comes to crawfish. The second it hits the water, that thing is gone. Once I put a bluegill and a bullfrog, and both were gone within 30 seconds. I tried to put a big white perch in with him, which he tried to attack. That’s the only time I ever took out a fish he didn’t eat

Dont get the need for the terrapot, or brick, is that just to weight the plastic trashcan down? You didnt say, unless I missed it
@Robslifeinhawaii
@Robslifeinhawaii Ай бұрын
Maybe try pumping water in from the bottom and having the water come out to upper part of the trash can. You would need a heavy wire mesh to keep your filter material held down.

It’s kind of a pointless design. Extend the fill pipe so it reaches the bottom of canister. Then place your spill outs at the top of the canister. This forces the water up through your filtration media causing it to actually work. Otherwise that waters gonna find the quickest path out and only filter around 1% of the water passing through. Always make the water travel from bottom to top to escape. This will pressurize the filter also.

This came up at the perfect time for me. Im right at the beginning of this fishkeeping journey, and want all the tanks! But i also know that burnout is a thing and its happened to me before with a passion of mine. It was heartbreaking to take a break but i had to. I will learn from you and take my time and leave those spaces empty for now.

Hey . I love watching these aquarium videos as an angler. It's great to see the feeding habits etc . Serious question though, when they get too big what do you do with them ?. There is no way they can survive in the wild after captivity ( i wouldnt have thought )so I just wonder what happens when a muskie or northern pike is a big girl/boy 😅

Steel wool leaves strands/pieces behind... green scrub pads and or good stiff nylon brushes get down in places the pads cannot reach... I NEVER EVER use any form of bleach whatsoever... If I do not scald the wood with boiling water, I will use a peroxide/vinegar mix not diluted... But that's ME.... I still rinse it very well, and the water it gets soaked in is treated as if it's going in the aquarium... If collecting your own wood, NEVER use ANY types of pine, fir, or cedars... Their tannins are toxic in aquariums (which are closed ecosystems)... there are plenty of lists for safe wood for aquariums... Oak and sycamore are easily identified, and cherry, apple and pear are safe... Use only dried or previously dried out wood... You do NOT want wood still containing any sap... Some of the best (IMO) aquarium wood I have ever dealt with are the root wads of young trees... they are by far the hardest to find (in the sizes and shapes you want), and they can be a pain to clean well... But boy are they worth the work... and the fish love the heck out of them,... I've been using wood from the Gasconade River in Mo., and a couple of adjoining creeks since the mid 1960s with zero negative effects so far... I only do tropical tanks and then natural set ups with fishes and crustaceans from my region and sometimes rarely from other parts of the country... and no, I NEVER release anything from outside my region... I have a couple of ponds if they get too big for my aquariums... and the local species get released back where I got them when they were small... As far as tannins go, once in a great while there'll be a piece that gets a tank yellowish or amberish, and that bothers me not at all.... My tanks have a lot of live vegetation going on (except for the goldfish tank) and stay pretty natural and healthy, so the tannins eventually dissipate through their bi annual 30% water changes...

C'mon man why you gotta take him out of his natural habitat? That would suck if I got caught out of a massive lake then got put in a tub. Only have fish if they're captive breed. Poor catfish
