Dear Teacher Kat and Teacher Mark, I have been a subscriber to your channel for many months, and I deeply appreciate the invaluable content you provide. Recently, I realized that I need to address the challenge of being able to understand English but struggling to speak it fluently. This inspired me to take a serious step forward, and I decided to join your channel to access the PDF files. These resources have been incredibly helpful. By reading along and recording myself, I can identify and correct my mistakes while speaking. I am truly grateful that you offer this support for only 50 THB per month, making it accessible to everyone. Thanks to your lessons, I finally feel hopeful and confident about improving my English every day. I am committed to watching and shadowing all of your lessons. Thank you once again for your dedication and generosity. Warm regards, Kem The Night Manager from Thailand :) :):)

Hi my favorite teachers. I have a question: why did you use the second condition in the phrase : if I had to choose…? Why not the first condition? As always thank you for the interesting and useful video!
@highlevellistening2 күн бұрын
Thanks for your message and good question! I suppose we consider the question: "What is your favourite music genre?" as quite an unlikely or hypothetical scenario. Maybe you will be asked in an exam or at school, but as an adult, this situation is quite unlikely to occur, therefore it goes into the 2nd conditional. It like we are saying: "If I [was forced] to choose my favourite music genre, I would say ... classic rock and ballads." In real life no one would ever *force* you to choose just 1 favourite thing (like they are threatening you or something 😅), but we are having a bit of fun by imagining ourselves in this situation. - "If I [had to] pick my favourite type of pasta, I [would say]... penne." - "If I [was forced] to name my favourite singer from the 1980s, I [would have to say] ... George Michael." The 1st Conditional is used for situations that are *actually* likely to happen in your daily life. For example: - "If I have to go into town on the weekends, I always try and go early." - "If I have to bring some food to a party, I usually bring some potato salad." I hope that makes sense!

In IELTS we normally find Academic Topics in Listening. Could you make a package based on IELTS Listening Which might offer academic discussion with different ways of speaking?
@highlevellistening2 күн бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! We've been thinking about posting some IELTS Listening materials at some point - it's just a case of figuring out how to present it and edit it. Maybe in 2025 we'll have it figured out!

hi 👋 lovely teachers 💕 Can you explain the nuance of 'collect' in the sentence 'Can you come and collect me?' Is it appropriate to say 'I'll go and collect you'? I know that 'collect' means to gather things, so I'm wondering if it's commonly used to refer to people. Is it a way of speaking that lowers myself, or can it be used with equals or even with superiors?
@highlevellistening2 күн бұрын
Hello! Great question! It's totally appropriate and correct to say: "I'll go and collect you. // I'll go and collect him after school." You can say this with colleagues, friends, family - anyone! It's a synonym of "pick up", so if you have a car, you can say: "I can [pick you up] at 3pm." "I can [come and collect you] at 3pm." I hope that makes sense!

Great video as always. I use back off while leaving the parking space indicating the a departure from it. Back up means the same with no intention to imply any departure by any means, right? By the way, pull up is a great vocab just like pull over. They might be confusing sometimes since they have very similar meanings. Pull over means you stop ypur car on the side of the road, however you pull up to a drivethrough to grab a Coffee. Pull up calls for a place, doesnt it?
@highlevellistening2 күн бұрын
Thanks for your message and great question! There's lots to discuss here: - "Back off" isn't actually a synonym of "Back up" If you're driving and you 'back off', you lift your foot off the accelerator and you slow down. "[Back off] the gas, there's a police car ahead." You might also hear "Back off! 😠" to mean "Leave me alone! Go away!" Especially if someone you don't like or a stranger is too close to you or putting you in an uncomfortable position. However, "pull up" and "pull over" do have a very similar meaning. They both mean "stop the car", but just as you said: - I [pull over] to the side of the road. // The police officer told me to pull over. - I [pull up] + to a place. // I [pulled up] to the Drive-Thru. // As I pulled up [to my office], I saw a car in my parking spot!" I hope that makes sense!
