Unrelated to the video, but I thought it would be cool to see your thoughts on the Children of Atom. I know they're not an important faction, but I think the group was a missed opportunity.

13:00 about the difference between fallout 3 and 4 i have my headcanon is that exist two types of power armor light and heavy, the light version requires training because we do not wear as with the frame, but only with the recon armor, which has a lot of mechanisms for wear the power armor

At least with the EEP strain, they do make some sense. Research this thing that is slightly different from this original thing? Good! And they’re actually different and unlike the regular ones, they never stop mutating. Makes sense. But nowadays, they don’t really have a purpose. The Institute made them and didn’t even use them at all. It was weird.

I think bethesda could make use of their economy to better balance late gear items. I did it in skyrim for powerful late game items via mods. I also just removed leveling up your character and only leveling up your skills via using them like two handed. So I pay NPC's money to create, enchant and upgrade my gear. For example, maybe make it so the powerarmor needs maintenance and the better armor it is, the more expensive it will be to maintain and probably store too. This could be tied with fusion cores too where finding one is rare and buying one is expensive too or something. This way you can have powerarmor at low levels but you won't be able to use it much if at all since the cost would be too much. So you will have to use it later on. I mean 99% of players are already looting and selling a bunch of stuff all the time. Might as well start using your bottlecaps for something.

For mutants to enter towns you would probably need to show yourself as not a threat, then do something to be allowed access to the town, and a final thing that will make people allow you access to everything but some people will still treat you as just another mutant.

What makes a good main faction IMO is if they can be both good or bad at the same time. What I mean by "bad" doesn't mean to be evil it just means flaws. One of my favorite factions in all of fallout are the minutemen and well they have flaws which makes them great.
@Steel-101
@Steel-101 13 күн бұрын

Having an actual purpose that they follow through on. Minutemen. Railroad. If you actually listen to the Railroad, they get out LESS THAN 7 SYNTHS A YEAR. That is abysmal.
@uberd3323
@uberd3323 13 күн бұрын
The Railroad’s only real goal being defeating the Institute makes them incredibly hard to support because absolutely nothing will change once they succeed aside from two options for civilizations being eradicated. If the Railroad were just an anti-slavery faction in general, and slavers actually existed in F4, there’s at least some potential for them there, but no.
@C4rrEternal
@C4rrEternal 12 күн бұрын
That really speaks to B. Their ability to accomplish goals. The Railroad have a sensible goal: liberate the synths of the institute (ideology), but they lack the ability to affect real change until you come along as a man on the inside. I think they're real issue is their personality.
@C4rrEternal
@C4rrEternal 12 күн бұрын
@@uberd3323I don't think them being a faction with an end in mind is a bad thing. They are a coalition with a goal. Once that goal has been met, they can finally end their war and go home
@a.monach7602

If you get access to their records, "7 Synths a year" is already invalidated by the current year, already being at a 9-1-1 E-K-R ratio by October. Either way, the amount of Synths that start to run isn't in their control, but by the Synths that get assigned to surface tasks who desire freedom. Don't pretend like you know the lore so you can trashtalk. It's disingenuous.
@uberd3323

@@C4rrEternal Right, but the problem with them is that unlike other groups of their nature across history, the home they’ll be going back to once the war is over is one that will be ransacked by Raiders, Super Mutants, Ghouls and Wild Animals, of which they don’t really do anything to stop or maintain. The Institute at the very least has their own civilization to look after once all is said and done, and the BOS is actively waging a war against threats to humanity’s reconstruction, but the Railroad are the only one with a guaranteed expiration date and they do not leave anything behind for the Commonwealth to build upon. The thing is, Fallout 4, like with most of it’s other writing screw ups, gives them a way to change things for the better down the line that just isn’t utilized. What do I mean by that? The Railroad has one of the largest Caravan stops/trading posts in their pocket, and trade is ultimately what gave the Europeans, Asians and Middle-Easterners a huge advantage in advancing civilization via the Silk Road and other routes (Hell, even the NCR only really exists because of Crimson Caravan and the Water Merchants). Fallout 4’s narrative about whether artificial life should be considered life has a fatal fuckup for the Railroad in that there is no attention paid towards Wasteland Slavery, which, if it was in the game, could’ve been a way to legitimize the Railroad and also give them some kind of end goal to work towards, as maybe caravaners from other places wouldn’t want to trade in the Commonwealth because of how brutal and distasteful slavery is. The Railroad’s long term plan should be to eventually crush various slaver groups across the wastes to allow for the market to bring about a more stable long term civilization. This doesn’t step on the Minutemen’s toes, and it’s also a way to maybe show a darker side to how the BOS operates as, perhaps, Arthur Maxson wouldn’t really care about things like the slave trade since that’s a conflict between humans brought about by humanity’s own brutal, greedy nature. Perhaps the Institute itself has dealings with these hypothetical slaver organizations as a means to acquire test subjects and more dna to use for Synth genetic diversity.

I think there are a lot of necessary things about great factions and characters in fiction but there’s nothing that guarantees them. The definition of a sufficiently great character, faction, or story has eluded western civilization for thousands of years. Even Aristotle touched on many of these things when he wrote about his favorite play, Oedipus Rex. It’s almost more decided by probability. The more necessary conditions you have on your side, the greater your probability goes up in creating a good character, faction, or story. But’s it’s just probability in the end. Even with all of those conditions in place, incompetent writing can still sink your story.

If you play this video in front of Todd, what's most likely to happen? a) He pretends he has an important call, leaves the room and never comes back b) The entire video goes completely over his head, no matter how many times he watches it c) He gets a brain aneurysm d) He somehow monetises the video and makes millions of it (while the original author obviously gets screwed out of every penny)

Appreciate your emphasis on the "loose criteria" of this. What makes a faction is nowhere as cut and dry as people act. Been thinking on this topic ever since I got interested in the Railroad and its stories - or, more accurately, the widespread and even vitriolic rejection of them as a faction. It's got to the point the opinion "they don't _feel_ like a major faction" is almost a meme, often called too niche and subtle in comparison, and "don't make sense" as result. Which I've become confused by, as looking at the story they reside in leads to them making perfectly good sense for me, and being my personal "most interesting" faction. That the Railroad is so niche into abolishing slavery and subtle in their impact is *in itself* expressions of its worldview - a response to the failing Minutemen and their scattered attempts to solve everything (just a coincidence they formed after the Castle fell?), or the Institute's careless exploitation of others (human *and* Synth) supported by the posturing of a grand, vague ideal ("Humanity's Only Hope™") - one that goes against previous and current major factions: big power, big impacts and big ambitions. Deacon with his second affinity conversation brings this directly to light: mocking the idea of a "greatest, noblest organization," or summing up the Railroad as "not out here to save the world, but trying to make it a better one." It carves out a completely unique part of Fallout's ideological spectrum. Not simply "robots are people, too," and not just "slavery bad." It's also, in tandem: "focus how you will leave your mark on the world; understand your limits; stay in your lane and out of others." Something not really said by the rest of the factions. Will mention that I think they definitely falter in points 2 and 3, here. Their presentation/worldbuilding is repeatedly shafted by the main plot they're in (Freedom Trail, the Brotherhood's most egregious intel asspull they ever _got away with,_ met post-Switchboard-collapse) thats makes them come off as ineffectual. And despite having a varied cast of characters with unique backgrounds and interactions, the main personality - Desdemona - is a one-note drag that often gives the rest a bad wrap.
