I made a drip burner 15 years ago. When it was running well the heat was downright terrifying. I was afraid the radiant heat would catch my fence on fire-and the fence was 10 feet away! When it wasn’t running well, it looked like a plane had crashed in my back yard. Clouds of black smoke. The neighbors were not impressed. 😂 But I’m very impressed at how far people have brought the oil burner idea since those days. Well done.

Well, thanks for the how-to. I may end up building one of these for making crucible steel.
@swdweeb
@swdweeb 2 ай бұрын
@@matthbva The one mistake I have made is the volume of my furnace is disproportionately large as compared to the size of the crucible. As a result I end up having to heat a lot of space before the metal melts. I've tried putting the crucible in the path of the flame and that helps but having a "tighter" furnace would be a big help.

Hello, my friend. I was this on a Sand Casting group and wondered what your thoughts were. Posted by Craig Dabler Admin · "Let’s talk a little more about vacuum assist sand casting. For about six years now I have been experimenting with using vacuum to help with sand casting and have learned some very important things along the way. 1) It will work with both a household vacuum cleaner or a vacuum pump. 2) If using a vacuum pump system it is advisable to have an inline filter designed for vacuum lines installed between the vacuum table and the pump. If sand gets into the pump it could ruin it. 3) When using vacuum assist with items with prongs or thin bezels it works best to use electrical tape on the seam (as pictured) to keep the air flow flowing straight down from top of the flask to bottom. This will improve the chances of getting all the prongs fully cast. 4) Warming the flask with sand (if taped it works as well) in a toaster oven for 10 minutes at 400* F will greatly improve the odds of a good casting. Time it so you can pull out the warm flask and pour quickly to take advantage of the heat. 5) Packing the sand without hammering will increase the amount of air being pulled through the sand. The more compact the less airflow since the compressed sand results in less space between the sand granules. 6) Make sure that the vacuum hole is flush with the silicone pad (pictured) and doesn’t drop down because sand doesn’t hold together like investment and will easily get sucked into the vacuum line or release into the hole. Even the thin 1/8 thickness drop down hole on the common silicone pads used on vacuum casting tables should be built up somehow so it’s flush against the bottom of the sand and flask."
@swdweeb
@swdweeb 2 ай бұрын
Wow, I've never seen this technique. I've seen people using vacuum assist in casting with plaster molds. That said, everything I'm about to say is speculation. I think drawing a vacuum could certainly help draw metal into tight spaces. Pouring metal into any sand, water or oil bonded, will cause gas to form. If there is no way for the gas to escape it becomes difficult for the metal to overcome the pressure inside the mold. I can see where drawing a vacuum could help. I can also see the potential for metal to be drawing into the sand and this creating a rougher finish. As I said, I've never seen this, but it sounds interesting.

Dear Sir, Im trying to cast billets for extrusion 4" x 400 mm and 5 " x 450 mm. U have some tips or advice to have success with this task?
@swdweeb
@swdweeb 3 ай бұрын
I love it when you mix measurement systems 😂 (inches and mm) I assume that 100mm x 400mm and 125mm x 450mm is what you're trying to pour. You're correct in being concerned with shrinkage. Something that big will want to shrink, a lot. If it were me, I'd try to do a bottom-fed, vertical pour with plenty of extra height to allow for the shrinkage. Feeding from the bottom will reduce porosity (assuming you keep your sprue full). I'd also leave the top of the mold open so you can see the metal in the mold as it rises and cools. When you're done, you can cut the billet to length removing the section with the big shrinkage hole in it. Good luck

I find it's too much of a pain to try to get/keep my greensand the right level of moistness. Petrobond is always ready, 365 days a year. You know you can make your own petrobond, right? Same sand and some chap oil. The only unusual thing you have to source is Bentone (NOT Bentonite!!!) but it's available out there. Costs way less to make than to buy, and just a bit more than greensand in the end. Look up K-Bond sand recipe.

re table salt; I've read that NaCl or KCl will just lie there unless it actually melts and becomes free ions; but both have a melting point above that of aluminum. If you mix and pre-melt the two chemicals prior to casting at a 1:1 molar ratio, you get a flux that melts before the aluminum; that's the key. So table salt alone probably does nothing unless your melt is way too hot. Most hydrocarbon compounds make a poor flux by themselves, and soap probably decomposes in heat to become a tarry mass of sodium-bearing goo that has *some* noticeable effect on the pour but who knows, even sawdust works for some metals.
