Well, we're kinda neighbors. I'm only 185 miles from the Kansas border 😂. I wish we were too, I'm going to get started on a series of bell videos... at some point, and I'm gonna need copper. 😄 Just curious, have you seen this instagram.com/campanemarinelli/ I'm headed in that direction, especially the way they do their small bells.

To hang a core in the cope you would need a "soldier" or a "Gagger" or "flaskbar and googer" a gagger would likely be the best. Assuming the core has enough collapsibility that during solidification the core doesn't split the bell.

Yeah it helps a lot. Olfoundryman is able to reuse false copes in the event he has to cast multiple parts like this. He rams one up and then uses it for multiple drags.

Scrap copper is easier to find and you can add some tin to the copper about 20 percent and make your own bronze. You can order tin bars
@swdweeb

I know that. I have both scrap copper and tin bars. It's just a matter of having time to make the alloy. I prefer to make ingots prior to casting items as I think I get a better mix with less stirring the metal in the crucible,

Great pour! I'm really impressed with the pouring system you have developed. Your sprue, runner, gate, and vent work so well together. I'm curious why no kind of riser was used. Was shrinkage not an issue with the aluminum, or was it uniform shrinkage throughout the material coupled with rapid cooling that made a riser unnecessary?
@swdweeb
@swdweeb 2 жыл бұрын
You know I use the name "feeder" right? 😂 The part is pretty uniform in terms of thickness, there isn't a disproportionately thick section in it that would shrink more than other areas. I don't know that there was any abnormal rapid cooling going on. I didn't use things like chill plates just the sand. This is the thickest bell I've poured, the walls are about 1/2" (12mm) thick. It clearly stayed molten for quite a while as the pour made it from bottom to top
@carlericvonkleistiii2188
@carlericvonkleistiii2188 2 жыл бұрын
@@swdweeb Feeder is a better term, I agree (as that's what it does), but riser is the traditional term. I confess, I didn't look at the Cherenkov (sp? - that may be radiation 😂 guy) formula for whether this needs a feeder. With regard to cooling, I was referring to the difference between the melting point of aluminum and bronze, thinking that, encased in that mass of greensand molten aluminum would cool more quickly than molten bronze -- less heat in the aluminum. It really makes one think about how much of an art bronze casting was long ago (trial and error), when they had no idea about bifold theory, and were pouring bells and cannon (!) from the top down - imagine a couple of thousand pounds of molten bronze going into a cannon mold!
