There's also the fourth option, which is making bolt actions only instakill on headshot. Hitting bodyshots is piss easy, hitting heads with a bolt action is MUCH harder. This only works for games that have a slightly longer TTK tho, otherwise there'd be no reason to use them over another gun that kills in say, 150 ms. Planetside 2 bolt actions come to mind. There is bullet drop over distance, and travel time, and you can ONLY instant-kill if you hit them in the head. So snipers have to actually be good at sniping to get a kill, instead of just flicking over to someone's general body and getting a free kill.

So ik a bit of game design (only a bit), and I think I have another solution : Why not have sniper points on the map where only there you can 1 hit your enemy with a Headshot. And if you are not on one point, you can only 1 Shot someone if : You get a Headshot, you are zoomed in and you are far away from the target. And if you are not zoomed in, you will have a 60% chance of missing your shot. Is this Idea good, or does it belong in the trash ?

IRL in Airsoft, pistols dominate CQC and sometimes even mid range becuase of their handling, ability to have most AEG upsides, and they look really cool.

But it doesn’t have to be balanced; not everything in the game will always be super fair and completely balanced, you’re gonna have some slightly op things in games, and that’s what makes it fun. In this case it’s also balanced because you need skill to play with snipers, especially in closer ranges. Since you can’t just spray and pray for a lucky shot; you have to be precise with your shots.

Railgun from Quake 2... not really a sniper, but the first weapon that had this exact issue you are describing. It had the potential to OHK on any range, and even at close range I'd prefer it over double barrel.

The solution is simple. Take your devs to a range that has pop-up targets. Let them shoot standing, kneeling, and prone while relaxed, then try it again after sprinting 50 yards. You'll find out real quick why the door kickers in real life aren't using scoped bolt-actions 😂

um, what? "no one can solve"???? bullshit. wolfenstein enemy territory was a perfectly balanced game. snipers were not overpowered. and most players actually played using typical assault weapons like the thompson or mp40 (ww2 game, ww2 guns) because most interactions were close range. you didn't have snipers getting up close and person. the problem with modern game dev is developers WANT a broken game, because they don't give a shit about balance. there is no reason why a sniper should one shot kill with a body shot. force the skill from the player to hit headshots for single shot kills. but also other guns should one tap headshot as well if you are in the proper range. balancing is easy. stop bloating gun mechanics and you will be able to balance them. make no scopes no longer exist. you no scope, you miss. period. slow ads time, because you HAVE to ads to be accurate. and finally body shots are two shot. only headshots are single shot (smaller target. skill based). xdefiant, one shot body snipers. perfectly broken gameplay. not fun. make it two body shots, the shitty gamers will cry "not fair" because they can no longer abuse a broken mechanic. call of duty is a horrible example because its gameplay is completely broken on purpose. because modern game devs think anger at bad mechanics = fun.

in tf2, you say thanks after you get a kill. why? cuz it's the culture. in tf2, you killbind after high fiving someone. (especially if they're the opposite team.) why? cuz it's the culture lol. it's impossible to explain why tf2 is so fun to someone while has never played it, because part of the enjoyment is participating in this game's culture together seemlessly without even realising your doing it. have you ever *thought* about why you say thanks after you kill someone? i havent lol. i just know that i do it almost every time i get a kill.

Overpenetration. Rounds that hit target with too much kinetic energy pass through cleanly, causing less damage than a bullet that tumbles through a target. This can be modeled by simply doing less damage up till a certain range where it goes back to 1 shotting
