Back after finally listening to the episode. Killer album by Viscera Infest, and I can’t believe I haven’t picked up a physical copy yet. I didn’t pick up on the thrash influence at first, but I can sort of see it now. When I got to see those guys at Netherlands Deathfest 2018, it was an absolute blast. Yes, we all did the 🪳🪳mosh lol. They were super nice to talk to also, the little we were able to communicate. I didn’t wanna talk their ears off too much because we were all very interested in watching Naglfar, who was playing the same stage right after them. Cheers fellas, great episode 😎🤘🤘🤘

Ugh I am not loving the Uberkill excerpts; the Root-style vocals on 1st sample, the Morbid Angel-y doom segment shoehorned into the 2nd sample and the thrash-forward guitar were all disappointing. There were some parts of every track that I love, and thats when they lock into a groove; that aspect is sublime and has always been one of their strengths.

Yes, they're best when they just do those rolling bulldozer grooves. That's another angle we didn't talk about - they need to change things up, yet if they do, that just distracts from the core appeal of the music. Maybe the only escape was doing an all-fast record.... - TBMG

@@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast Yeah, an all-fast record might be interesting; you could be onto something. The all-slow record (Eerie 1995-ish) definitely did not work as well for me, though I'll still champion it. It's pretty lifeless however. Also do you guys know Ceremonial Torture, it's not that far removed from the Barathrum sound.

Dino was actually the ‘snotty’ singer in Dystopia too and I always really liked his style as a vocalist/drummer. Especially live you can really see how his ranting and drumming drives the whole thing. I liked the the Deadform record but I honestly think it could use a bit more of the Dystopia style 90s jump-up riffs and weird breakbeat mosh parts. I get they’re going for a more Sacrilege/Bolt Thrower thing though.
@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast
@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast 3 күн бұрын
I mean if you were there for Dystopia back in the day, that's cool. We just can't stand the lyrics, man. I agree w/ you about the jump-up riffs, that stuff made a lot of sense in the 90s stench format - i'd much rather hear it there than in nu-metal. Prophecy of Doom and the later Deviated Instinct have some good flailing dreadlocks moments too. And re. Deadform, I think if they were going for Sacrilege / "Realms of Chaos" it'd be more thrashy/riffy, generally a bit more lively. I think it could use more of that, and/or the explosive syncopated mosh parts you're talking about. As is, it kind of hangs out in this lumbering walking-pace eighth-note territory, closer to the deathrock influences. I really do like this one, but I can see why you or TDMG would want something more active. - TBMG

I have a distinct memory of when Uterovaginal first came out. I went to a wedding of friend of a girlfriend at the time, who was a few years older than me. (I was 23 at the time), and I remember being excited to meet one of her friends that was also into metal. Open bar, and I had been drinking Knob Creek on the rocks all night. I was very impressed with myself that I managed to write down “Uterovaginal Insertion of Extirpated Anomalies” on a napkin for him, and told him it was the most brutal thing I’d ever heard. No clue if he ever checked it out, but I loved that album at the time. Sadly couldn’t care too much about anything they did after. That was the epitome of slam. I don’t care for a ton of stuff that would be categorized as pure slam nowadays, but I do like bdm that incidentally contains slams. Thought the new Cephalotripsy was just ok, but not something I’d buy. Same on Wormed. Loved Planisphaerium, everything after was slightly downhill. Never cared too much for 200SW, not bad but were in the Maggot Stomp overrated camp for me. Carnivore Diprosopus first couple were awesome, and sick live.

probably his best and definitely most cohesive- not sure if that's just a product of the recording getting clearer compared to previous albums but the Dawn-esque main riff thing you guys mentioned has never been more apparent to my ears and it's in every track. also im surprised your favorite AH is the most straight forward one hahahaha, i do like that one but it seems like more recently both his projects have converged in sound and so to me the last AH could've fit better as an AR release since he kinda pulled back on the raw weirdness. AR still the best of the two overall tho.
@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast
@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast 29 күн бұрын
Glad the Dawn comparison makes sense to you. I do think it's more prominent here than on Consanguineous - that one has some huge riffs, don't get me wrong, but overall it's less driving/aggressive, more about generating atmosphere thru complexity. I can see how the latest Albionic Hermeticism is pretty close to that older, more "evil" sounding Auld Ridge, for sure. As far as AH, I'm really not qualified to talk about the discography as a whole - it's been a long time since I checked out the old stuff. Re. my liking the more straightforward material, I'd put it like this: I have way more time for "raw/weird" BM than TDMG, but it's not really what I look for in the music. Rather, I like stuff that is direct and powerful - in a sense, straightfoward. That can be raw and/or weird, but it doesn't have to be. I love early Graveland (raw/weirdly non-metal), I love Dawn (polished/conventionally Metal), and I love Gorgoroth's Under The Sign of Hell, (raw/conventionally Metal). All of these have direct, powerful songs w/ continuous aggression. And all of those influences show up on THIS record, which is insane. - TBMG ⚔

"Ass-to-Mouth Resuscitation" really should be the name of a band or album. Hadn't heard of Auld Ridge before this, I don't really keep up with new releases in the Black Metal field (or new releases in general, outside occasional standouts like the new Chat Pile record), but from what I've heard it sounds pretty fuckin' sweet. I really like my Black Metal with those epic, somewhat melancholy tremolo riffs over frantic blasting and it does have that. Additionally, Gorgoroth.
@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast
@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast 29 күн бұрын
Glad you dig it man! I don't hear the riffs as melancholy at all though. To me it sounds bold and exuberant - and grim at the same time. It's the "battle-joy" you read about in Homer or the Cattle Raid of Ulster. Gorgoroth. -TBMG ⚔

@@drpibisback7680 Oh for sure, there's a lot more going on here than just "anger"/"evil." The further you get from those 80s / early 90s records, the wider the expressive range becomes. There's more and more emphasis on "epic trem riffs" and the various lofty moods you can wring from them. So if that's what you're looking for in BM, you may actually prefer stuff from the 00s on, where that's basically the norm. Do you like Taake? - TBMG
@drpibisback7680
@drpibisback7680 28 күн бұрын
@@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast I don't believe I've ever listened to Taake. When I said I don't keep up with newer Black Metal, that was not to imply I'm buried in old-school BM either, I just generally have not listened to tons of Black Metal. Over the past year my listening in Extreme Metal (when I'm not listening to non-Extreme Metal things, which is often) has leaned mostly to the Death Metal and Funeral Doom side, and Black Metal has never been a genre where I could name like 20+ albums I've listened to - I find it interesting as a form and subculture, I've drawn elements from it in my own guitar playing, but on a day-to-day basis I'm probably not listening to Black Metal.

Really fascinating interview. The way different members of the Old Guard view the history and development of black metal is always a trip for me. Without a sort of scene Orthodoxy being handed to them, they have really interesting heterodox takes on its history and which bands / scenes are good or foundational. It’s much more conducive to making great art I think than what we have now, with like TBMG said, people obsessing over Seigneur Voland and not even liking DMDS, because one is in vogue.

Hey thanks man, glad you enjoyed this. And yeah, there's a funny thing where even though we have the entire history of the genre at our fingertips, w/ unlimited narrative possibilities (in principle), the first 1-2 generations had far more divergent notions of canon, genealogy, etc. Those guys were embedded in regional cultures, w/ significant barriers to accessing stuff from other scenes, and strong biases (in a neutral or good sense of the word) shaping how they received it. Chris's vision of black metal is emphatically Huddersfield / Northern. Even his emphasis on professionalism - clean musicianship, good production, etc. - has an English heavy metal stamp on it, that blue collar approach where you take metal seriously as WORK. I'm thinking of Sabbath, Priest, and especially Maiden here - Chad Bruce Dickinson laughing at punk bands b/c they couldn't play and couldn't make a living, piloting his own tour jet, etc. - TBMG ⚔

I was looking forward to the Malignancy portion of this when you guys posted it, finally getting around to it. Malignancy took me a little while to really get into. Bought Intrauterine around 2000 or 2001 when I was first getting into death metal. At the time I had only really heard stuff like early Entombed, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Napalm etc. even before I had heard CC. That album was too much for me to comprehend at the time, (especially the drumming), and I sold it. Then a few years later after I started hearing more brutal stuff, I listened to the Cross Species Transmutation EP, I started “getting it”. Nowadays I love them. I told Danny Nelson this long winded story when I talked to him in 2019 when they did the 20 year anniversary thing. He was super friendly and appreciative. This new one is still going to take a few more listens to catch on for me, but I’m liking it now that I know what to expect.
