Looking through old things of mine currently, and came across this. On the fence about throwing it in the dumpster or keeping. This video made the decision for me. I figured it might be fun to use for the sake of having the ability take nostalgic photos in the present year.

SD CARDS /FLASH DRIVES are like toothbrushes, they are PERSONAL devices forever. Quote from the video creator "I am not a forensic data investigator", that's right, somebody who is, CAN extract those files even though you wiped them. It's best if you never donate your cards or drives, just destroy them if you have had data on them that could harm you. You heard me right, just destroy them.

The video title is confusing to me: "Goodwill Could Probably Wipe These Better", It's up to the user to erase them before they turn them in!! It's not up to Goodwill or a pawnshop. Now, if they say they test format them, that's fine, but don't expect it to be a wipe, and if they don't do a full wipe and sector test, then the device can still be defective. Asking if it's ethical, again, it's NOT on Goodwill.

If you are going to recycle your old SD cards, it is your responsibility to wipe the data, not anyone else's Once you have relinquished these cards, your expectation to privacy goes out the window. Think of it this way, when you throw items in a trash bin either your own that you wheel out to the curb or in a public receptacle, you lose claim and possession of this trash. If I'm Goodwill I'm certainly not going to waste time worrying about other people's data and lose money in the process of trying to get these SD cards out to new hands.

My ex girlfriend gave me one. She was going to throw it away! I told her I'll take it figuring that I can sell it to a pawn shop. But seeing how inexpensive they are used I figured I wouldn't get much for it anyway. I took it to a park today and got some good shots of some birds, ducks, and cranes. Maybe I'll sell it on Craigslist or Marketplace because the video quality is low. Most cellphones can do at least 2k. I also got a great closeup of a full moon.

Goodwill does nothing...their online auctions are money scams...they sell bogus smart phones, personal computers, and tablets...that do not fully operate...they do not give correct detailed descriptions of items up for auction. They charge you 3 to 5$ priveledge fee to win item. They offer no assistance afterwards.. pick up are limited to when they want you...some wait 10 days after paying before allowed to pick up items won. I had such experience with the mid tenn location. Refuse to patronize their online auctions. Charged me 42$ priveledge fee for 14 items . Goodwill does not help anyone in need...I was told by employees of storefronts...they are instructed to call police...naturally they do not. Most execs paid 6 figures...corporate treats ground level as less than human...and particularly bad mouth challenged employees...the bad just continues Salvation army are the good guys. Ask questions, learn, educate yourself first hand, do not believe until you find out yourself. I support my local Goodwill because of its staff... all kind and good hearted.

Goodwill does not have the time or resources or skilled staff to wipe harddrives or SD cards. It's up to you to be responsible and do the right thing and wipe them yourself. I'm not saying they are saints, they aren't, they get free stuff and then resell it for a profit... it use to be at a discount, but since the arise of "flippers" who ruined it for everyone and the poor, their sales associates now have to price things equivalent to ebay and amazon. Another example of bad apple greedy KZbinrs ruining it for everyone.... leave the Goodwill merchandice for the poor to pick through and buy used and old beat up equipment at a discount... based on other people's "goodwill" to donate it and have someone else get a few more miles out of it.

I dont think I would ever buy used drives, theres not much risk but id be afraid of viruses or even worse possibly illegal content that would have to be reported. Its a common enough occurrence that IT shops usually have a procedure to report stuff like that.
@MrPir84free

Word of caution here: Just because you buy new does not mean that you have a new drive nowadays; I know that there are new scams where folks swap out their old stuff with new; and the vendor just re-shrink-wraps the box and sells it as new again. Or with RMA'd devices, you have a decent chance of getting not a new device but a "refurb" or "tested" device meaning it's used, just maybe wiped, and pulled off from a shelf. Most warranties state that your replacement drive may not be a new device, but a refurbished or tested device.. Taking in a laptop/desktop in for repair; and you also run the risk that a tech replaces the drive as well; sometimes without asking.. Vendors will cut costs everywhere they can, and that includes using refurbs/ tested over providing the customer with a new drive. BTW: Most drives have SMART info on the drive; it's often a good idea to take a screenshot of the SMART data ( like with something like CrystalDiskInfo ) because you can take a screenshot of the Serial Number, power on hours, power cycles, etc... Take such a screenshot prior to sending your device in for repair just in case someone swaps it out. Even if you buy a new drive off from Amazon, you should use a tool like CrystalDiskInfo to verify that the drive was not used or refurbished, or just swapped out and re-shrink-wrapped.

Why not use a VM to investigate these SD card?
@MrPir84free
@MrPir84free 3 ай бұрын
Physical access while running the scans / read /writes will be faster when a physical machine is used to begin with. With a VM, IF the VM can access USB devices, also means that the host actually touched/ read the device before it was passed over to the VM. That in itself puts the host at risk. Some utilities will not work thru the software layers that exist when accessing external devices thru a VM. All in all, a physical device is what's going to be needed often to scan/repair/wipe the device effectively; more of an issue especially when performing the same operations multiple times.. All in all, a new or used physical desktop, i.e. a windows workstation can be had for probably less than the guy spent on used storage devices. As he had a used desktop, it is the safer approach. Some malware can survive a reboot; which is why the drives I use to rebuild systems have a physical write protect switch on the USB drive for reloading the OS. That way, at least malware cannot be written to the USB device and inadvertently tracked back to another system. Why ? Imagine, you put the USB drive in a system you plan on rebuilding; but you miss the opportunity to push the necessary hotkey to select the boot device; now the system, potentially infested, now has full access to that USB drive; Will it happen ? Maybe, not likely, but possibly. But if you are rebuilding a system, do you want to take that chance? This is the same reason you should not use a VM to access a physical device like a USB flash drive or memory card from an unknown source; do you really want to take that chance..

Some comments: Inserting a memory card, or flash drive into you system is only a risk if you haven't disabled Microsoft's virus/malware distribution system, AKA Autorun. Yes, you'll hear scary stories about how hackers can rewrite the card/drive's firmware so that even with Autorun disabled, it can infect your system, but show me one actual example of this happening. In fact, show me one program that can change the firmware on a flash drive. In fact, point me to written directions on how to do this. I've never bought used memory cards or flash drives, but in this area, we have bulk trash pickup twice a year where the city will haul away almost anything you put on the curb for free. I've found many computers that still had hard drives in them. My view is that if people leave the drives in them and don't erase them, then looking through them is fair game. As for those being the only copies of the images, trust me, if they ever backed up the files to a computer, they have at least three copies of every photo. Regarding finding illegal material: There really is no legal risk to you, unless you report it. At which point, you've opened yourself up to scrutiny, because even if you're just reporting it, you're immediately under suspicion. Unless you feel you absolutely HAVE to report it, you're better off just wiping the card/drive and forgetting about it. It's not like anyone will ever know that you briefly had it in your possession. Finally, I'd like to address the persistent myth that data can never be erased from a hard drive. I have a question for those who think that: If that's true, why can't you double or even triple the volume of a drive by just erasing the data, writing new data to it and still be able to access all the erased data? Hard drives, at least mechanical ones, are designed to store ONE, and only ONE set of data in each section. Once that data is overwritten, it's GONE. "But there's data on the edge of the tracks, and residual bit patterns!" The tests that found residual magnetic traces on the disk were done with one pass, overwriting the data with zeros, so they were able to detect faint traces that weren't zero. That method falls apart when you use random data to overwrite the disk. It should also be noted that the hard drive itself can't read such traces, you need ultra-expensive lab equipment, and even then it only works under ideal conditions. As for the data at the edge of tracks, again, no consumer level hard drive can read this. You need ultra-expensive lab equipment, and even then you're only going to get small fragments. It's not like it's going to magically reveal perfect banking passwords. Not to mention that there aren't hacker groups with this type of equipment. Why? Because it's not worth it. Anyone who gets your old hard drive is going to look at it for files, maybe run some standard file recovery software and if that doesn't turn up anything, they'll move on to the next drive. Unless you're a terrorist, nobody is going to waste hours trying to recover data from your drive. If you still don't believe me, contact a data recovery company, you know the ones who charge huge amounts of money to recover data from damaged drives, tell them that you accidentally zero-filled an important drive, and ask them how much they'll charge to recover all the data on the drive. Make sure to tell them that the entire drive was wiped, but it was only a single pass. See what they say about the chances of recovering your data.

Ask any cyber security company if they recycle their preowned storage devices, they all send them for secure disposal (aka destruction), you can wipe them securely but with storage devices nowadays you really can't be sure, and it also damages the drives lifetime.

The page that mentions the Department of Defense standards also says, you're still responsible for erasing your data. Also, I'm genuinely surprised that they even claim that they wipe your data. Testing if electronics work is already pretty uncommon for them so wiping data seems above and beyond for them.

This would be the responsibly of the person who donated the storge device to ensure that all there data is gone and if it did contain sensitive info they should destroy it. Goodwill receives so many items that they need to move items fast and don't have the man power to check every item to see if they work or if someone forgot to securely erase a storge card or hard drive.

If you imagine the SD card is a book, when you format it, you're erasing the table of contents. The text and images of the book are still there, but anyone who looks at the table of contents would see an empty book. If your computer wanted to write something in your book, it would look at the table of contents for an empty page, write the data on the empty page, and then update the table of contents. The original data on that page is now gone and anyone who looks in your book sees just that new data. But all of the other pages are untouched, and the rest of the original book is still there.
