My biggest fear going into PhD applications is that while I have a publication, I have also been in the Navy for the past 11-years and don't have the traditional research and lab experience of others. Do you have advice for what those of us trying to make career shifts into academia should do to try and highlight more of our strengths?

I love your content. Thank you for all your help. However, one thing I would like to do is to contact prospective supervisors to make sure they are taking new students and that funding is available. Knowing that funding is not available upfront can save you lots of time preparing an application to be rejected at the end. You can just move on to find another program.

Hello Casey, I will have an interview soon. Yay! However, after watching your video on interview process, I still have two specific questions I want to ask. Since my potential advisor is a fresh new professor and I can be their first PhD student ever, what questions should I ask and what are the things that I need to consider when interacting with faculty who only has one year of being a professor? Thanks!
@CaseyFieslerPhD9 күн бұрын
Great question! I think that your questions could be much the same, but just recognizing that some of them might be speculative. What kind of research are you most excited about doing? You also might ask if there are particular other faculty in the department they might be collaborating with (as this is a way of getting at in part the kind of support network you might have, but is also a thoughtful question). You also might ask about their experience as a PhD student and what they're hoping to do now. Remember that questions you ask at an interview would be slightly different than questions you ask after you're admitted - because at this point they're still interviewing you as opposed to you interviewing them. After you've been admitted I'd probably have some more pointed questions about their support structures and resources and that sort of thing.

I currently submitted my PhD applications to few universities in the United States as an International student for fall 2025. I’m afraid of the outcome to be honest because of the investment both financial, emotional and mental. But I think it’s a leap I am proud to take to advance my career to the next level. Hopefully I get the good news I am praying for; will sure be an unforgettable moment. I believe in what God almighty can do.

is it legitimate to state that I want a PhD to get into venture capital and in general for a better positioning for a career in my field? Im sure that I dont want to do research in my future - but for the jobs I want, a PhD is a necessity...
@CaseyFieslerPhD24 күн бұрын
If it’s actually true that the job you want requires a PhD then that’s a great reason. There are just limited jobs that require a PhD that don’t involve research (or teaching) at all… (Venture capital? Why?)

@@CaseyFieslerPhD Cool thanks - then I will definetly mention it in my motivational letter as I have 0 aspirations of staying in the lab. For biotech VC a PhD is required as one needs to evaluate whether the concepts presented by start-ups have scientific merit (this is especially crucial after the Theranos scandal). VC is so intriguing as it allows to stay very close to cutting-edge translational science (my passion), while being even closer to actually advancing science that benefits the world than when just working on one project for several years in a lab. :)

@@CaseyFieslerPhD Yeah, I commented to see how academics would react if I noted in my motivations that I wanted to use my PhD to achieve something outside of pure research - honestly, your reactions make me quite hesitant. I'm about to start my M.A. in January, and im working a full-time job. I was able to take some gradute level courses in my undergrad last year, so i'm familiar with the course load. My question is, if i decided to pursue a PhD after I complete my M.A. would i be able to keep my job? Or would the PhD program expect me to be exclusive to their program/stipend? Follow-up questions, would I be able to able to pursue a PhD at an institution that was different than the one I receive and M.A. at? If so, should I still expect 5-8 years in the program if I've already completed graduate level work?
@CaseyFieslerPhD28 күн бұрын
Some PhD programs require you to be full time in general, some require you to be full time in order to have an assistantship. I think it's very unlikely that you'd be able to have an assistantship while still working, but that's a question you'd have to ask the program. It's very common to pursue a PhD in a different program than where you pursue a Masters, and questions about timelines would be best addressed to the program as well.

PhDs have less impact on the real-world problems. Theoretical knowledge must be accompanied by the real world application to benefit the society at large. Otherwise knowledge confined to academia has lesser value.
@CaseyFieslerPhDАй бұрын
Your second two sentences are totally true but I have no idea what they have to do with the first sentence. (Which I think is just an incorrect statement though I guess that depends on “less impact than what?”)
@permvirsinghАй бұрын
@CaseyFieslerPhD I mean PhD research topics are mostly not chosen, keeping in mind the real-world challenges. Enhancing the theoretical knowledge without any practical applications can not be considered an impactful research.

I had a simple question maybe not related to getting Ph.D; I've often seen researchers' room through class-zoom or programs on KZbin like you, and seen a lot of textbooks or maybe collected papers. It comes a surprise to me as two meanings; First, you've seen through much of it? or you have the capacity to read through them fast and easily? Second, You read papers as paper books not on the computer? That's my question.

@CaseyFieslerPhDАй бұрын
I don't know how any program could enforce an actual policy against it. I would just say that you should be careful about how it might impact your writing. (You also might consider using something like Grammarly that is more explicitly designed to help improve your writing.)

@CaseyFieslerPhD thank you. As a native reader can you recognize the text edited by chat gpt?

@@sajedeht5170 It's not a question of whether it's recognizable as AI or not, it's a question of the quality of the writing. Often AI generated writing is not great. I would recommend using it for editing and not for generating text.
