Love your perspective on industry research. I think more of it is needed especially for companies to open up their doors to more aspiring researchers. Good luck in your novel!

Hi Casey. I want to ask you to make a video about the research plan and cover letter which are asked at the beginning of applying for some positions.

I’m afraid that this isn’t common in my field and/or in the U.S. so I don’t have any helpful advice. (Since I don’t know how they’re evaluated.)

Could you please make a video for international students living outside the US who are applying for Ph.D programs of the US universities? Which factors are most important to consider and how many seats are available for internationals? Specifically at top 20 universities?
@CaseyFieslerPhD3 жыл бұрын
In my experience, international students are treated identically to domestic students, which means there isn't any specific advice and certainly not a number of allotted seats. If that is not the case everywhere, it's just something I don't know about so can't give advice on.

Do colleges send out rejection letters first for phd applications ? And when will all colleges have PhD results come out ? Is there a deadline like April 15th all colleges must have released their decisions?
@CaseyFieslerPhD9 ай бұрын
They will but the timeline varies a lot. April 15 for many programs is the deadline for applicant decisions so it would typically be before that.

Dear Casey, thanks so much for your videos, I've watched nearly every one of them! Really need your advice on this: I'm from a product design background with BA and MA degrees. I work in the auto industry as a vehicle designer. Having done several projects in relation to user experience, service, Interaction design and design research with multiple teams. I realized that software will became the core to all future automobiles, thus want to pursue a higher degree in HCI. However I don't have experience in computer or coding and it's been really hard to find advisors with similar background. Should I still apply for PhD in HCI based on your experience? Thanks in advance!

About half of my PhD advisees did not have any experience in coding before joining the program.

How did you manage to pay for your masters degree? I’m applying to programs and I am concerned about student loans since I already have $30k from undergrad
@CaseyFieslerPhD3 жыл бұрын
I was fortunate to get assistantships as a masters student so I was funded the same way a PhD student would be. However they were unrelated to my research (and not really about research at all) so it was more like a job.

Thanks Casey, please I need an advice. I sent letters to my potential supervisor during summer without response. I want to send another one but I want to update the letter. Will that be a problem or I should just send the initial letter.
@CaseyFieslerPhD3 жыл бұрын
Emails you mean? I think you could just follow up by responding to the original and including whatever new information you like. Or send something new, either way!

Hey! Love your videos! I recently deferred my PhD enrollment until next year. Will this make me look bad to the potential advisors i interviewed with? Would they be annoyed that I didn’t attend this year?Just want to know what to expect going in next year.
@CaseyFieslerPhD3 жыл бұрын
I personally think it's pretty understandable why someone would have deferred last year. :-\

Thanks Casey and Pepe! That was fun and so very interesting, you have such a distinctive personal style and individualism. It's very admirable, and so very inspiring to boot. May I ask you this, what is your opinion about older Phd candidates who choose to pursue one later in life, say in their 40's or 50's? Is there an advantage or disadvantage to being a mature student in terms of the experience? And here's another one for you lawyer side of your brain, who owns the IP from the projects that are derived or made during your Phd? Do Phd students and grad students, for this matter, choose to monetize or commercialize their discoveries? If so, do they retain 100% ownership of them including any monetary gain that can be had? TY! :))
@CaseyFieslerPhD3 жыл бұрын
We've had multiple PhD students in our program over 40, and one of them recently graduated and got a tenure track faculty position! And universities tend to have technology transfer offices that deal with IP - most of the time it doesn't come up, and I haven't heard experience with it, but it's certainly something that happens and I've known grad students to create startups. It does require working with the university though if the product was created through funded research.

Greetings! this is a super amazing video! However, I was wondering if I can help you to edit your videos and create some highly engaging visuals and shorts out of them. Your content is super rich and authentic thus I strongly believe that more people will be benefited when your videos reached to them. I can see a lot of scope for improvement in your content and I would love to share it with you ASAP. I did a whole analysis of your social media pages and prepared a personal strategy for you only. Waiting for your positive response. Thanks.
