Finally got some time to watch the video Keith (Sorry about any typos). Results are good mate. This was standard back in the day hence why I never bought them but everyone was willing to let you borrow them on another 2-3 month stint overseas. From memory the little Ricoh's were gangsta. Amazing that the noisy functions and stuff still work. Cheers Marco.

Thanks Marco. I'm sure that they were built down to a price when they were continually launching new models all the time, but I think they still had decent glass and auto exposure. Most people just wanted photos they could show friends and family without having to know the science. Cheers, Keith

It’s no looker. A face only a mother could love. But for its time and target market, as you note, it does a job. More to the point, 9 quid to you in 2024. You’re not going to get the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for that. Someone out there is looking at the one with a pouch and box in mint condition that’s going for 60 quid. I’d count this as a win but yes … crap haha

Thanks David. In dense woodland with mixed light the exposures were just about spot-on, so it really does a fine job. It's just a shame that the zoom is so clunky and the shutter release is so sensitive. I would only bin a camera if it was so bad that it needed taking out of the ebay "untested" re-sale market. Cheers, Keith

Damned by faint praise ... we just have to accept that there has always been people who want to take photo's but don't care diddly squat about how they are produced. If you spent a month using it you'd probably be quite happy with it, as long as it does what it says on the tin.

@@theoldunsshot1005 Limitations can be quite liberating. I'd be trying to work out if there is a variation of shutter speeds, my guess would be there were only two, something like a 40th and 120th sec. Might seem like a waste of film but if you photograph a person walking, cycling and a car all moving across the frame in moderate light you'd get a good idea. I must have half a dozen point and shoots that I've never put a roll through.
@HoLeeChit11
@HoLeeChit11 2 күн бұрын
You’re right, film is expensive. Do you remember the old days when you could buy a roll of 36 exposure Kodak Gold 200 or Fujifilm 200 for about £1.50. You could send it to Vista Print for developing for about £2.50 including postage, and they would give a roll of Tudor film for every roll you had developed from them. Technically you didn’t have to buy anymore film for normal everyday shooting, only if you wanted a more specialist film would you need to buy a roll. Those were the days.

It looks a big old lump too, Keith! 50% hit rate, it could have been worse I suppose. Is it a glass lens or plastic. Looking at it it looks straight out of the 1989 Argos Catalogue - imagine my surprise to google it to find this came out just 25 years ago (1999).

Thanks Andrew. It certainly hit every branch when it fell from the ugly tree, yet I got 39 well exposed shots on the roll but some were out of focus, some had camera shake and some were just uninteresting. I can't believe some of the prices being asked for this heapopoo! Cheers, Keith

It's a shame that the company that produced many design classics such as the OM1, 35RC, XA, and Trip 35, should have lowered themselves to this plastic monstrosity. The lens might as well have been a fixed focal length.

Thanks Kevin. I have to say that the glass was about the only saving grace for this camera (oh! and the metering). I think that in the 80s and 90s, the big companies were bringing out new models just about every month or so and the only way to keep up was to cheapen some materials. Shame. Cheers, Keith

Shame about the Embleton disaster, it's a lovely bit of coastline and no doubt you'd have bagged some good shots. I'm not a huge fan of fomapan 400, I'm not a huge fan of film grain (I realise this is not a cool thing to say in film circles) and without nailing the blacks which Fomapan 400 seems to leave as dark greys I agree with your frustrations. The camera did OK, maybe a 200 colour film might suit it better, it would have been the go to film or the era of the camera. For £1 I think its a winner.

Yeah, I think you may be over-critical of the shots. They are what they are, mates in a pub relaxing. If you're bothered about the flash reflecting then stick a bit of thin masking tape over it, which will flatten out the light a little. I'd forgotten how many old point and shoots I'd seen with tape over the flash until you mentioned it, as a kid I thought it was to stop the flash falling out ... Good luck with the Maxxum, don't forget to take the batteries out between uses.

Bugger about the Minolta. I had a similar experience in the '70s serving with the forces. We had special permission to visit the control tower at Kai Tak airport. I had a Ricoh slr at the time and took what I thought was a complete 36 exp film knowing it was a once in a lifetime experience and I had got some great shots. I got 2! I think the heat and humidity had softened the film slightly and the rough transport mechanism of the camera had ripped the sprocket holes after two exposures. The camera went shortly after that and was replaced with a Canon FTb.

There exist three models of the Selfix 16-20, Model I with 4 speed shutter, was made in 1951 (made by Barnet-Ensign-Ross) Model II dates from 1951 to 1954, and Model IV with 8 speed shutter dates from 1954 (made by Ross-Ensign). Lenses were Ensar, Ross Xpres, and Rosstar. All three lenses are very good and are coated. The cameras have internal synchroflash contacts. In 1951 Model I cost Pounds 17 14 10, Model II cost Pounds 26 10 4. In 1956 Model IV cost Pounds 17 11 0. When an exposure has been made, always wind on the film, to avoid double exposures. Black & white photos will be improved when using push on yellow and/or orange filters.

Thanks for being so clear on the price issue. I'm amazed at people's comment on prices. They really expect a brand new camera that costs the same as a second hand one from 40 years ago, when those costed as much or even more this one does back then! Same thing with the new Rollei 35AF. You are spot on with comments about the Pentax 17 there's a lot it's not, but the one thing it is, is its a brand new quality film camera and running something like Delta 100 film through it should easily make 8x10 or even A4 prints at half the film cost, compared to full frame.
