First Time Processing with Cinestill CS-41. Out of Date Agfa Vista 200

I shot the film in two cameras - Minolta Maxxum 7000 and Kodak Retinette 1A

Well done. I too develop in the kitchen before taking the film to a shower room to dry - but the film stays in the developing tank until I reach the shower room to reduce the risk of dust.

Impressive results for first time C-41 processing Keith. Considering the film was 8 years out of date the colours didn't look bad. I've got a roll of Konica Centuria Super 200 which expired in 2005 sat here - I think it will be my next film project. You did a good job with the spot removal tool as I didn't notice anything.

Thanks Andrew. In the end I avoided featuring the worst affected frames. I used to love Konica film back in the day, especially the way it renders colours. I have some Gold 100 from about the same time and that will be next up. The general consensus is to drop the ISO 1 stop for every decade it is out of date but I will try mine at 50 ISO - it worked the last time. Cheers, Keith

You’re right, film is expensive. Do you remember the old days when you could buy a roll of 36 exposure Kodak Gold 200 or Fujifilm 200 for about £1.50. You could send it to Vista Print for developing for about £2.50 including postage, and they would give a roll of Tudor film for every roll you had developed from them. Technically you didn’t have to buy anymore film for normal everyday shooting, only if you wanted a more specialist film would you need to buy a roll. Those were the days.

Hi Keith, great results, might temp me to try C41. Impressed with the Retinette 1a photos, what lens is on that? Picked up a Retinette 1b recently with the Rodenstock Reomar 45mm f2.8 and still to put a film through it.

Thanks Andrew. The 1A has a Schneider Reomar 45/2.8 and I am sure it was made to the same drawings as the Rodenstock (which I have on a 1B). These German Kodaks are really good. Cheers, Keith

Your magenta cast could be your developer being a little too warm. Try dropping a roll by a degree or two and seeing how it compares. It shouldn't make any real contrast difference as long as its in the soup the same length of time. Can vary though from film make to film make. Worth experimenting before you spend real money on new film. Nice shots though and I didn't spot any dust or scratches.

Thanks Iain. For a first attempt I am quite happy. I only had to move the slider 2 points away from magenta, so it wasn't really that pronounced. I also have some 2006 Kodak Gold 100 that I bought on ebay years ago, so we will see how that goes. In the end I didn't use the really bad frames but there are some dust spots on a couple I did use.
