Such a shame, used to go there as a kid to have a walk around the museum and garden. also used to take my son for a cheap day out. What on earth have they done? Or not done. Have seen other enviromental transormations, which is not just letting weeds take over! Wild English flowers etc. Total mess again.

When I spoke to the staff they attempted to justify this environmental project but doing this in such a small area really makes no sense to me and the other people I spoke to who were there that day said it looked a mess and neglected. We all agreed it wasn't a pleasant experience to be there. Many thanks for your comment

Hi Phil, the large building at the beginning of your video used to be a gentleman’s club. My grandmother used to clean it. 1950s early 1960s. There were beautiful grounds and fountain. My mum grew up in Jesson street. Both my parents went to Beeches road school, and did some of thier “courting” in Dartmouth Park. Thank you for these videos, we are loving watching them, sadly my dad and grandparents are no longer with us. Looking forward to you’re next video xx

Yes this is another town wrecked by the woke council. I remember them laying all the new paving in and around the high street. The disruption was terrible and it cost millions. When it snowed the new paving was quite slippy and when it was wet and the sun shone on it, it dazzled you and you couldn't see where you were walking. The council are obsessed with knocking down old buildings and building new ones that often don't serve much or any purpose to the wider public. I think they should tidy up and make the most of the old buildings and save us all some money and perhaps a bit of history .I also think that street vendors should have there own corner where they plug into and pay for electricity instead of running those noisy generators with their fumes and clogging up the middle of the high street.

That big tower housed the flour. Those units on the left as you first go down the road, the ones with the open shutters, used to be where the maintenance blokes worked from. Firkins had their own shopfitters working from there. They also had their own mechanics for their vans and even their own petrol pumps. As you go past those open units on the left, as soon as you go past them turn left and all of firkins factory was on the right all the way down to where the dispatch dept was. That little road you went down towards the end of your film (between the old Express & star building and Panesar) is one of the last real cobble stones left in West Bromwich and that lead down to the old tip I worked at firkins for 20 years and it was a great company to work for. Used to start at 5am and the place was busy atvthatbtimevofvtgevmorning We used to supply all the shops and there must of been close on 60 shops to supply It was really really busy Great video Phil

Great bridge was killed off by the local council, the car park for the indoor market was closed, going to build a health centre, ten years of being boraded up, the health centre was never built, then it was sold for housing, the company went bump, All that couldn't kill the market, But the pandemic did. the old market was sold to a developer from London (?).

Fascinating stuff Phil. In my early years I grew up and lived in Florence Road, until the family moved to Black Lake in 1962. The building now occupied by the gym used to be a garage if memory serves me correctly and later became an AA service centre. It has probably changed hands a few times since then. The newsagents on the other corner has always been there I think, run by various people. A few yards into Florence Road was the site of a WW2 bomb hit and remained a pile of rubble well into the late 50s and possibly beyond. The church you saw is Holy Trinity and still very much alive and has changed little over the years. Opposite the church was Holy Trinity Infants school wher I was educated- it was a very old building and in more recent times was knocked down , to be replaced by a more modern school building. The area in the 50s was a decent place to live but it all sadly went into decline with the changes in the population demographic and I certainly would not want to live there now !

@@awalkwithphil I've found a website which confirms my information at www.westbromwichhistory.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/WestBromwichBombing1940.pdf I was beginning to doubt myself after I posted it ! I was born in 1947 and I cannot remember when my parents moved to Florence Road. The German raids were in 1940 and it is very unlikely that they were living there then . I will have to do some more digging by reference to the census and filling in some gaps in my family tree.

My time 60's to 80's from the Jesson park to Carters green and all the way upto the upper high st West Brom building society was memories of safe, clean, vibrancy especially on Fridays and Saturdays... They'll spend the 20 million on out of town contractors who will spend months ripping up perfectly good pavements and replacing it with slippery block paving. They've already done this in the high street and also made it one way now so no one can drive into the town now. It's all designed by planners working for woke councils carrying out government agendas. It's sadly the same everywhere now.
