There was a spate of handbag snatching about 15 years ago and one day when I was coming out of the bank a police officer walked with me to my car. He said I was an easy target and in future to ‘dress down’ lol. Glad to see The Trumpet is still going. The town doesn’t look too bad considering how many places closed down after lockdown. The market has always drawn a lot of interest. Thanks for the tour Phil.

Hi Phil enjoyed the walk down Bilston high street my wife comes from Bilston we loved the Trumpet when you looked up at the ceiling it was covered with old records. I'm sad to see the greyhound shut and we loved the white Rose .the Market has always been good and when you looked at Mount Pleasant my wife worked for a company called Beldrays around that area all the best Paul

Hi Phil. Sue's older brother took us to a pub ,I am sure was Bilston way.The pub was called The Struggler and the pub sign was of a man barely hanging onto a cliff edge.He had the hots for a girl that frequented the pub.Nothing came of it and we never went there again.Also,am I right in thinking that in Heath Lane Cemetery ,just inside the main entrance there was an impressive statue of a young man in motor bike gear.I live on my own Phil so I am probably going a bit doolally ,but I am convinced when we went to lay flowers on her gran's grave we saw the statue.The same for the pub sign !!

You know i've get a dad and a grandmother buried in Heath Lane and Ive not noticed this statue. So next time I visit I will make special note to see where and who this statue represents and will hopefully let you know. Many thanks for the comment

@@awalkwithphil it is near the main entrance I think on the left side.It was quite a big statue and if memory serves he was holding gloves.Again ,I am elderly so memory might be playing tricks.Would it be possible for a photo ?

I ❤Bilston market, a rival ( on a smaller scale) to Birmingham markets. This is the only town I’m aware of in Sandwell that has a good old fashioned indoor market that’s thriving.

I suspect you are correct

Thursday and Sunday are busiest Market days. Hopefully you didn't get a parking ticket on that car park. It's the privately run (giving limited time) car park in Bilston all the others are council unlimited parking .

I like Bilston, I've been there a few times to gigs at The Robin. I think it's a good example of towns that suffered because of amalgamation - it had more civic pride when it was an independent borough.

Why are our towns dying, in the 60s, 70s, 80s everywhere was loads of people, not all people can afford cars, the bus don't seem to run to many places now, I remember great bridge new road had loads of people waiting at bus stops, when the old railway bridge was still there, I remember going into the railway station as a kid with brother mom and gran and one of the staff said it was closing down, I felt really sad we were losing these things😢
@colinaston73323 ай бұрын
The reason Bilstons shops and market are still thriving is because it’s free parking!! Wolverhampton councils war on motorists, ie gestapo traffic wardens, outrageous parking charges should learn a lesson from Bilston People won’t spend good money buying a car and then get on a bus!
@awalkwithphil3 ай бұрын
You make an excellent point, Many thanks
@steveroberts9453Ай бұрын
Not to forget a one way system designed to confuse motorists , causing non-locals to stray into bus lanes or pedestrian zones and incur fines. The street signage is an eyesore .

Hi we going to billston market since late 1970 it has changed the market is being knock down end of September 4 18 months the market going to be the high street

I didn't know that many thanks for the info.
@Amanda123254 ай бұрын
I didn’t know that either. I hope the move doesn’t detract from what it is today. Bilston is a traditional town market with stalls for everyone. There’s something for everyone who visits so I hope the character of this market is maintained when it moves. All the best to the Bilston market traders 😊
