I walk to the sites of all the old cinemas in West Bromwich beginning near to the entrance of the Queens shopping centre in the service area loading bay. There were several cinemas in such a small area of the town. Three of the cinemas were near to the current areas of the Kings/Queens shopping centres, making it difficult to locate with accuracy
Many of the cinemas were unsuccessful due to poor locations and even worse management which has resulted in none of these fine buildings surviving today. I walk along the High Street, Sandwell Road and Carters Green in search of these once mighty cathedrals to film
I finish the walk in Carters Green West Bromwich next to the Farley Clock Tower

West Bromwich is unrecognisable now, and I do not mean just the building.

I enjoyed this one Phil, took me back a few years. My favourit used to be the Kings, closely followed by the Tower/ABC.Then the other side of the scale known to us as the Flea Pits.Number one was the Imperial in Spon Lane followed by the Queens in Queen Street. The Queens had one thing going for it,when we came out ,Trows the ice cream shop was just on the corner of Queens Street.Happy day's all gone now. I knew WB like the back of my hand and every fire Hydrant in every street. The Dragon (Wife) and I would be lost in the new WB,we shop now in Dudley, shame.

I share your sentiments. The cinemas were great entertainment back then and everyone I know remembers Trows, it must have been some place, people would come from miles to visit Trows. Many thanks for the comment

Another great video Phil,I remember the tower on carter's green when it had closed,it had big stone steps I used to climb when I was a child as we passed, the kings cinema by the bus station had a nightclub the other end of the building downstairs called sparkles which was changed a few times I think but the last name was nicklebys hence the sign on the rear of the building.

Hi Phil .The Kings. Only went there once.July 19th 1971 .Soldier Blue. Happy days.Along side the cinema on Carters Green there was the Army Careers Information Office, where Sue joined up.As we were billeted privately for ARMEX 71 we had to report to the ACIO ,or else we were listed as AWOL.There was also the TA centre there too.Is it still there ? Too much change in that lovely town.

I went to a local history talk the nineties and a man named Ned (can’t recall his surname) tried his best to bring attention to the lovely Art Deco cinemas that were being destroyed. So many have disappeared, which could have been repurposed. Look at the boring buildings they throw up in their place. Town planners have a lot to answer for. Sad that there are no photos of some of the cinemas. Tfs Phil.

Many thanks Mary, there has been a fair few cases of historical vandalism by our town planners and the cinemas are a case in point

Looking at your series of vlogs it looks like the people who were responsible for planning and regeneration really really hated the old West Bromwich. They have literally laid waste to everything that had any history that reflected the people who lived and worked there and replaced it with something that makes Milton Keynes look like Bath

A sound comment that. Everything the council attempts to improve the worse the Town seems to become

@@awalkwithphil when I went to senior school we had to go to park Lane school, till 3rd year then we went to Alex, we used to little end and big end, we went to Tipton Town for dinner, firkins had a big Devonshire cream bun for 25p which alot of kids would buy, by the bridge if you went down a few steps was a chip shop best old fashioned chips anywhere, but when they knocked the school down, and started regeneration, I think it killed the town off, there was an old peoples home and a clinic across the road, from the school, pubs a a loverly clothes shop that had been there for years, you know the sort that used pu alot on the window,

Sorry but I don't like how they keep changing our old towns, I remember the new kings cinema standing for hours to see grease when I was a teenager, I think the last film we saw was look who's talking or ghost, sorry it closed , I think a lot of films are to reliant on cgi
