Yay, a C4D user! Funnily enough I was looking for some furniture modeling guides. Btw, rather than move your extrude object (for the table), just select the spline, then the extrude object and then select Center Parent To under the Axis menu. It will then line up the extrude object axis with the splines.
@shanemckenzie3862Ай бұрын
One other thing - you don't need to make a copy of the spline for the flute covers - instead you can Shift +C for the commander and search for Geometry Axis. Add this as a child to the flute cloner - then use the offsets to re-position the flutes.

Is it possible to export all those Cloner Instances individually as stls so they retain their uniqueness (like say scale or twist)
@design.alexander5 ай бұрын
Hi! If you set the Cloner type to Instance and then hit C to make the cloner editable, it will convert into a Null folder with all the geometry inside of it as is. You could also try to select the cloner, right click and choose "Current State to Object", though admittedly, I don't know I've tried that on a cloner. See if either of those do what you want.

Yes, thank you 😊 This works! My last challenge now is to export all those separate instances/objects (dozens of them) as individual .stl files 😮
@design.alexander5 ай бұрын
@@idmimagineeringCOUK worth digging around in the web to see if there is a script or plug in that would do that. You can't be the first one to need that kind of export.

@fribiesdi Totally get it. I love blender too - there are some real philosophical differences in how those programs operate and I always encourage people to try them out and see which one feels better. It's like Fender or Gibson, Canon or Nikon. Everyone has to find the one that speaks to them.

I do Zoom meetings all the time with clients, and the ability for them to just look at the Perspective view, while I work on the other monitor to do all the updates?! Must I say it? Game-Changer!! Thank you! Also, I was just working with a colleague who is learning VWX, and he had already found the CTRL-Mouse-Button temporary Fly-over tool, and I was trying to find it myself! HAHA! Would love to see how you set up your moving lights when exporting from VW to C4D. I use this software process for every rendering, but I’m having issues with the lighting symbols when moving over to the render phase. I’ll have to position everything in VW and in C4D I’ll just have a bunch of 3D geometry with the spot lights in a different folder. It’s easy to change colors for both lens and light and play around with the beam parameters, but if I wish to reposition the lights or pan/tilt the uphill begins since the light isn’t attached to the geometry as in Vectorworks. Any tips on this? It’s not a big hassle if the show has 10-20 lights but for an arena show with hundreds movers it’s a headache doing different looks.. and the worst part is if I have to change over something back in VW.
@SimonBonami8 ай бұрын
Same for me ! Would love to have a deep dive on your process between both softwares.

@MaxxProducer @SimonBonami Great question! I've actually working on a tutorial about this but put it aside - you've inspired me to brush it off and put it together. Until then, here's the short answer: I don't do any lighting in Vectorworks. I have the movers in there as Symbols, but they are just geometry. When I move to Cinema, the symbol becomes one master light at 0,0,0 and the lights on the rig become instances. I then swap out the master symbol with a light I've rigged in Cinema that has the Redshift Area light as part of the assembly. I've made user controls for pan, tilt, intensity, volumetrics and color to dial in the look easily. I then duplicate this symbol and assign the dupes to the clones in different parts of the rig. Where this all falls down is that I have to convert lighting instruments back to just Symbols in VW so they carry over as instances, and doing this kills the unit rotation and focus. So I have to clean the rig up before I can write cues which makes me angry :) Still trying to sort that one out. My system is not a perfect one for sure. Tutorial coming soon!

Great Tips! I actually have a usage for the naming of objects inside of VectorWorks. In almost all my custom python plugins that interact with objects, the first thing it does is to name all of them. If the plugin at a later state has to change something on only one object it just looks for the name, which by the rules of VectorWorks has to be unique. Interesting and also helpful fact. If you manually duplicate the object and it already has a name which ends with a number it counts the number up by one.

Seems really sensible but I can't seem to do this in 2024. Is there an updated workflow? The Screen plane bit at 12:45 isn't there in 2024 for me...
@design.alexander8 ай бұрын
@MattSmith-di2io Yes, things have changed as Screen Plane has become legacy. Now, if you have a 3d symbol and you want to make it Hybrid - exit the symbol, then double click on it and choose EDIT 2D. This will ghost your 3d and you can now draw 2D on top of it (make sure SHOW OTHER OBJECTS WHILE IN EDIT MODE is active). When you exit the symbol edit, it will convert into a hybrid. I will post a video update - thanks for catching this.
