Man wünschte sich, dass mal ein Takt in einer Klangfarbe bleibt, so ist es nur ein klanglicher Mischmasch. Wenigstens zwischen den verschiedenen Teilen sollte es Unterschiede geben.

Sorry this is a weird interpretation. A little eccentric. He takes rubato to an extreme!!

3am and I’ve listened to this twice. I know the piece inside out and back to front but I just heard some of the voicing in a new way. This really speaks to the heart in a way many interpretations just don’t. Absolutely beautiful ❤

What an insightful and practical course. Revisiting the piano as an adult, is much more challenging than playing as a child. You speak very clearly. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and talent with the world.❤❤❤🎹

Thank you, Lydia! This performance is so passionate, precise and perfectively balanced. I love these variations, and perhaps this is my favorite interpretation of all! Most, most, beautiful and reflects, I think, the true spirit of this great set of variations for piano. Bravo!!

How beautifully played! Sir, you are the only pianist I have been able to find on KZbin who understands the essence of this piece. The sheer horror and sorrow that emanates from the opening notes under your hands is unmatched. Sends a shiver down my spine, almost as if there’s a ghost menacingly staring at me from behind a corner. A very sensitive and well researched performance overall, thanks a million for sharing!

Mr. Bernstein, before stumbling upon you i always had a feeling that the piano just cannot sing 🙏 your rendition is just indescribablely.... Human, seriously i cannot understand how ppl shoot Goulds "music" up in space instead of yours😅

I'm taking piano lessons and started with the Gymnopedies... I have thought of moving on to this after finishing my first assignment but this requires a level of intimacy with the piano I still do not have. Beautiful rendition

Thank you seymour for playing schumann in such a beautiful way, not only that, you are the only one who has convinced me yet, after reading schumanns writings from the neue zeitschrift für musik, his letter and a book called"la musica romantica"(that is a group of miscellaneous writings from schumann) I have learned a lot on what his indications mean, especially the reading of slurs, of hairpins and accents. Finally someone who plays in an informed who who has also immense musicality and personality. I've been criticized a lot for my interpretations of the score in competitions, they would tell me:"you should follow the score more", my blood boils when they say that as it is not my fault if modern praxis ignores half of the indications and doesn't even know the real meaning of the ones they follow. It is a relief to hear such an important figure prove to me that mine wasn't just ignorance, as I try my best to serve the music of the composer. I cannot thank you enough for your beautiful interpretation and warm, singing touch.

Such beautiful, controlled and tender playing. There were moments where you brought out inner voices, and it made me feel like I was experiencing this piece for the first time again. Bravo, sir.

Every bit as satisfying as losing oneself in an epic novel. The playing has such grace and purpose. Some of the moments felt so tangible. Just breathtaking.

My favorite moment of the piece might be the last very quiet variation at the end. Right as the piece seems to end, as it climbs all the way up, when you think it might not go any where else, or that it’s going to end, that music appears out of nowhere, almost from a distant dream or a distant land or something. Your rendition of it is the best I’ve heard.

Like renanortega, I too came here from the Gould performance and, lovely though it is, this one is enchanting to a higher degree in the hands of Seymour. Of course, there is Radu Lupu, but that is another story.

Seymour, what a beautiful recording, I didn't even know it existed! I was looking for my own recording of the piece, because I'm considering to revive it, and then I found this! So inspiring! Composers are the best performers of their own works after all.
@robertallen52105 ай бұрын
You often hear this piece played as though the performer is racing to get through it. Such a shame that is! Mr. Bernstein of course does not approach it in that fashion and because of that, this work takes the audible form of the gem it is. Unforgettable.

This piece was on the vinyl record ML 4717 of the Columbia masterworks part of a series of 10 records of the festival Casals at Prades in 1952. However on that vinyl record the pianist was Leopold Mannes . I can’t seem to be able to locate this on KZbin or else. If someone owns this vinyl record I mention I would greatly appreciate if you could post the recording on KZbin . Many thanks
