I used to keep one of these, just the chassis itself, in the bottom of my 100W 1X12 Carvin X-Amp back in the 90's, as a backup amp head. It saved my bacon more than once, as that Carvin was picky about having actual voltage coming to it, and some of those college dive bars only had ONE outlet for the entire stage. It sounded ok through the EV 12L that was in the Carvin's cabinet, but we had to stick a mic in front of it because it wasn't loud enough. I pulled it (chassis only) out of a dumpster, lol. STILL HAVE IT. STILL WORKS. The Carvin? It died around 1998.

I just worked on one of these that the output stage was trashed. Converted the outputs to silicon and it sounds surprisingly good. Still trying to figure out the diode to use for silicon, the original was germanium. On the SR-900 I have, the stereo light is neon and has a big coil to boost the voltage, that might not be working in yours. It's a tuned circuit that my meter could not measure. The SR-900B they changed the circuit to use a regular light bulb instead.

Thanks for the comments. I never did get the stereo neon bulb to work. Maybe I'll take a look at that coil next time I have the unit open. Mine is still working great. Question. My vintage record player has a built in radio. It has a preamp built in. Would it be worth my wild to use a external preamp for a better sound quality? I've read hooking up another preamp will cause a hum.
@mguess26 күн бұрын
That's a hard question to answer without knowing the specifics of your existing vintage stereo system. It sounds like it may be console system. If that is true I don't think an external phono preamp will improve the sound quality enough to be worthwhile. Also, if the turntable is properly connected to the phono preamp, you should not hear any hum.

Correct it's a Electrophonic Console system. BSR turn table. It does sound good, I had. Bluetooth transmitter connected to it by way of the speaker outputs on the console and a 3.5mm Jack plugged into the Bluetooth transmitter. Plays great.

I'm not really familiar with those capacitors but a quick check on Audiokarma indicated some issues with them. I don't routinely replace caps except the old paper/wax capacitors from the 30's - 50's. I don't use my Teac that often so I'll probably just keep an eye on the Suzuki caps or possibly check them for high ESR to see if they are showing signs of failing. Good luck and let me know what you decide to do.

Very helpful. The only issue is that there is a consensus that 3-in-1 oil will eventually turn gummy. That is why they make 3 & 1 motor oil for electric motors specifically for this purpose. Otherwise, you can use a synthetic motor oil of the correct weight like 30. I know it seems nitpicky, but with these old treasures it's a good idea to have the added confidence using the exact right thing when we can.
