Hey man, the reason you got chatter at 47:51 is probably because you're running the spindle forward instead of reverse. Since you have reversed the tooling to work around the back , I think you also need to reverse the spindle rotation. If that work piece were steel your carbide bit would have crumbled. Nice video though, thanks for sharing.
@ED_T
@ED_T 20 күн бұрын
@@davehyper7835 I know it looks like that in the video but that’s an artefact of spindle speed and shutter speed playing tricks, the lathe was in fact running in reverse. I believe the reason for chatter was a nose radius that was too large for the cut in combination with the boring bar stickout

Im about to start on a L00 collet chuck for my lathe. What im wondering is will the timing of the key mess with things? Ex. When turning the taper, the location of the lathes key needs to be marked on the new taper or it will be out of time.
@ED_T
@ED_T 4 ай бұрын
The location of the key slot does not matter. You can cut it after you have finished cutting the taper in any position. What that’s for is when you machine the chuck side of it, mounted on the new taper, it’s mounted in the same orientation every time you mount it back on the machine in the future. So in theory you should have zero runout when you take it off and put it back on again.

Pretty clever, it's a huge boring head for the mill. I wouldn't mind having a smaller wolhaupter for my siege sx3 but they're out of my budget for now.
@ED_T
@ED_T 4 ай бұрын
Yes they are very expensive, and honestly, if you pay full ebay price for one I’m not sure they are worth that unless you specifically need the facing feature. My smaller boring head is a Chinese one and it does everything I ask of it. The Wohlhaupter is a bit of a luxury item for us hobbyists. I happened upon mine by chance for very cheap and have heard stories of other people doing so as well. Sometimes it’s just a matter of being at the right place at the right time at industrial auctions or similar equipment sales

@jasonhull5712
@jasonhull5712 7 ай бұрын
Ok so the differential screw is a M20-1.5 pitch and the other end is a 16mm- 2.5 pitch and then two 10mm guide pins 40mm apart ? If this is the correct Wohlhaupter differential screw then I would like to modify my UPA4 s/5 with an integrated shank to the removable shank like the newer heads could be equipped with. Just ordered some inserts for turning down that hardened shank. Hope it’s soft enough to drill and tap the center hole and the two 10 mm pins. I will definitely harden and temper it. ( It’s just a R8 ) But this setup is what allows them to operate in both directions. Otherwise the threaded shanks can back out making a real mess. I’m not sure how this will translate as the R8 has the smaller 7/16”-20 drawbar threads.. 🤔wonder if the Allen key would even fit through it.. or maybe use larger pins and a smaller center screw with a running fit shoulder ? This one’s gonna test me.
@ED_T
@ED_T 7 ай бұрын
I don’t know if the differential screw is the same size for the larger boring heads, it might be larger. Drilling in the hardened shank might be possible but tapping it sounds like a lot of trouble. Good luck!

It looks as thought the blade is not held properly in the holder. Go to 34:43 or there abouts and you can see that the top part of the blade is more exposed as you look towards the work piece. Is the blade parallel to the motion of the top slide? Great vid btw, I've sub'd.

You should use cutting fluid, a lot of cutting fluid. the blade breaks because it expands when heated and sticks to the edges.
@ED_T
@ED_T Жыл бұрын
The reason it broke is the tool doesn’t form chips properly and they jammed up just above the cut. I invite you to watch the follow up video where I put a better tool to the same task. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYiYZ4GBnrd2oposi=FrTDn5dx-zlOoD6G

I had it set pretty close but it's possible. I'm sure it still would have shifted if it was on perfect center height. Generally parting feed rate should be reduced towards the end of the cut.
