I just wanted to leave a comment letting you know how helpful your channel has been. You have some amazing content and hope you keep up the good work. I have one questions however; I recently bought a Brazilian rain tree and was going to repot it in a 3 gallon nursery pot to allow it to grow, do you have any recommendations on what soil to use within this pot?
@OrlandoBonsaiTV13 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind comment, I really appreciate it. As for the BRT I also put mine years ago into a larger pot to allow the trunk to thicken. If it’s already in a bonsai soil I would keep it in that for the larger pot. However if it’s in a potting mix, that would do very well. Unlike placing a bonsai into a bonsai pot where we work to increase the feeder roots, the long running roots in a potting mix will help that truck thicken quicker since they increase in size much faster Good luck and thank you for watching 😊

I’ve been there. Sometimes it takes a few attempts to get it right. I find it helpful to sit across the room at eye level to see if I see the overall shape of what the tree should look like and its size. Also the trees will often push a new shoot or branch that makes the whole tree completely obvious to you. Give your self some time, you’ll figure it out. 😊

How often do you have to do that?
@OrlandoBonsaiTVАй бұрын
Not very often. In fact the tree is generally developed using the same front for the life of the bonsai unless something changes that makes it more pleasing from another angle. This was to correct an error suiting repotting to get it back in the right angle. I usually report the portulacaria every 3-4 years

Bonsai is not an art I'm financially ready for, the equipment all costs a bunch. Recently took up kintsugi and that gets expensive since you use gold dust, just not all that much.
@OrlandoBonsaiTVАй бұрын
I understand your point. As I started in bonsai I did a lot of collecting and purchasing raw stock which is a lot less expensive than buying trees that were worked on. I slowly acquired the tools over time. I am a big fan of kintsugi and tried it on one of my chopped older pots. I love the whole concept of celebrating the damage to make it better than before. Thanks for commenting 😊
@ocelot420_69Ай бұрын
@@OrlandoBonsaiTV Yeah, I am learning kintsugi by way of loving tea and collecting teawares. I'm an illustrator and cartoonist at heart and tea is my fuel. I just happened to knock a handle off a favorite pot so I'm learning how to do kintsugi using modern replacements for urushi.

Watched multiple videos and yours actually answered the question. Is this technique applicable to every leafed bonsai? As opposed to evergreens and things
@OrlandoBonsaiTV3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes this can be applied to broadleaf tropicals but certain evergreens cannot be defoliated without losing the branch. You can always try a small section of your tree to be certain that the leaves replace before defoliating the entire tree. Good luck 😊

My Bodhi ficus is producing little leaves now. My question is, does leaf reduction have to be done every year?
@OrlandoBonsaiTV3 ай бұрын
You’ll find with the reduced leaves that the tree will get better ramification ( more branches and more leaves) which will help the leaves stay smaller in future seasons. However until that’s achieved you may have to do the process each year with the new initial flush of new growth. It gets easier each year though

What if some of the Lime Sulphur drops and runs on to the soil ? Would it harm the actual Bonsai ?
@OrlandoBonsaiTV5 ай бұрын
Not to worry. It doesn’t really hurt the roots. If it’s a rather large amount of the lime sulfur you could give the tree a good watering to flush it out
@thomaslcrawford5 ай бұрын
I do want to add that your comment about being careful as these can look like a topiary. I assert that your second row of branches need some wiring downward as their shallow upward angles with the foliage pads do look rather topiary like and have a bit of pom pom shape which I think would beneft from a more horizontal wiring. I'd love to see this tree today given it's now 9 years after you shot this video. I am going to try to find it elsewhere here on KZbin or on your Instagram, website, or other internet source.
@OrlandoBonsaiTV5 ай бұрын
Thomas I do agree with your comments on the bottom branches. I did intend on letting them get longer and bringing down the ends to not be so very pom pom like. Unfortunately I wound up selling this tree years ago to some that sadly let it dry out and die. I hate selling my tree for that very reason
