In this video I go back to follow up on previous projects to show how well the trees reacted to the processes and how they are progressing. I cover the root over rock, thread graft, sacrifice branch, and air layer.
Also I speak briefly about the state bonsai convention in Orlando

@Timaginationdesign The method for airlayer is consistent but the amount required and the success rate changes with the type of material. For material like black pines you need to start early in the growing drain to give the slow growing roots to establish themselves

It may be spider mites. also make sure your soil is not staying wet, you just want it moist.

@MrWthisthis100 It can be very fast or rather slow. It all depends on how often you feed it. Look for a first high number on the fertilizer and you;ll get faster growth

great air layer. i did one on a ficus and a pomegranate tree. both were successful. but i'll try the foil next time as they told me before to wrap the air layer tightly to keep out moisture. and i used compost and dried leaves instead of moss. worked well as i said.

The Florida sun won't hurt your tree unless you don't water. My trees are in full sun all the time. The browning of the tree may have been caused by spider mites which are a problem for junipers. If you shake the foliage you will see very small red spiders. They will kill your juniper. either use some insecticidal soap ot rinse your tree regularly with a host at a strong setting. Most people think its a water issue and drowned their trees when they see brown tips forming

@MrWthisthis100 I water the top fo the tree so that the entire tree gets wet. That way roots start popping out higher up the tree because it senses a water source
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 12 жыл бұрын
@BroodAudio Just to clarify. Even though I planted the tree on tp of the rock, most of the roots were long enough to be buried in the soil. The Saran wrap is not a good idea at all for a juniper. They like drier conditions and do not like to be wet. The method I show really only works for a tropical type of tree. I'll do a demo on how to do a root over rock with a juniper soon

Thank you so much for this most informative session. Did you say July 4th was your B-Day weekend? I'm the 11th of July, and to me this was a pre Birth day gift. I especially learned the importance of keeping bonsai plants moist. There are some conflicting advice given that you have cleared up. Great Video, I look forward to the follow up videos.

@BroodAudio The moss should be okay but if you see the tips browing you may want to take it off because it would be showing that it is staying too wet

Hello, I enjoyed your video on juniper. I have one that was rescued from an old landscape. Unfortunately, it was not treated well for a couple of weeks before I got it. It responded well to my repotting it, but now it is yellowing/browning from the branch out to leaf tip. It this overwatering? It has been VERY wet in central FL lately. I am in Silver Springs.

I bought a Juniper about 6 months ago and I was really excited to take care of my bonsai tree! I live in Orlando Florida and I thought that sun would be good for the tree so I had it outside for about a week and I was watering it every day. I started to notice how the tree started looking very dry and after a few more days I gave up on it when I realized that it was probably completely dead. Im buying a new juniper tomorrow and I just wonder if the florida sun is too much for the tree? Thanks :)

I will be thread grafting a Japanese Maple to itself, bending a branch over from the top and threading it though the bottom. Is there any way to keep both the branches once it takes. Also, I dug up a local sapling and it appears to have the same characteristics of the Brazilian Rain Tree (thorns, leaves fold in at night, similar leaves), but I live in Zone 6a; any idea on what it is?
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 9 жыл бұрын
You should have very good success using an existing branch as the thread graft. You'll notice as the graft actually takes it will thicken as it exits the hole. When that occurs you'll be able to cut the source branch free and then keep that branch separate. I'm not certain what northern tree you have but if you google tree compound leaves you'll see all types of trees and you'll be able to identify it that way. Best of luck

when it came time for the leaves to turn was there any difference in timing or color? It's a great idea! Also I noticed that you are growing plants, like the trident maple, that I thought would not grow well in a warmer climate? I also live in a tropical area, do you have a list of plants that you have successfully grown?

Benn my growing zone is 9A in central Florida so we can grow both tropical and deciduous trees. Nothing special about leaves changing colors or anything like that

About branches, if I purchased a plant from a bonsai nursery where it has a branch growing off the trunk, is it a good idea to keep it until I think the girth is the right size?
@OrlandoBonsaiTV

Hey quick question is it hard keeping deciduous trees in Florida? I'm nervous as i am moving down to Jacksonville from New York and i have a few deciduous bonsai's
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 9 жыл бұрын
Mark New York That's not an easy question. Yes deciduous trees do very well in Florida IF the tree that you are talking about will grow in the Florida Grow zone. Northern Florida is 8a-8c, Central Florida is zone 9a-9b and southern Florida is 10a-10b just make sure the tree will grow in those zones. There are a lot of northern trees that will not tolerate the heat here

All trees blossom but some not as spectacularly as others. The Japanese Maple has more a of show with the leaves colors and they mature, the blooms are nothing to speak of really

for faster root growth bury the tree rock and all in bark. bark retains almost no water but keeps things humid.
