Hi from Sweden. :) I have a 15hp Yamaha from 1978 (15AK), everything looks the same on it as on yours in the video. Except: Mine has 2(!) float-chambers (an x-tra to the right if U look att the carb front on and in situe), dual gas leads and a "dual" fuel-pump. Why? And can i remove it, fit a single-line fuel-pump and do the gas leads as it is on yours without modifications? //T

I picked up a kit on Amazon to rebuild mine for $20, and the carb main mount gasket is wrong so for another 12 bucks I got a sheet of blue siliconized gasket material at Oreillys, used an xacto blade and a scissors and a ball point pen to make a new gasket for one that didn't exist. Seriously, the motor came without one and one of the nuts was loose as a goose.

Nice video, thanks! I'm no engine guy, but having owned this exact engine for many years I've done a bit of basic maintenance on it (assisted by youtube). I may have a go at changing the timing belt this fall, so this video is going in the save folder. The little "half moon key", what is the purpose of that? And did you use the "piston stop tool" before loosening the fly wheel nut with the impact driver?

Thanks for the video. I have a 1986 6hp Evinrude. It has recently been sputtering and now doesn’t accelerate properly. Dies at low idle speed and doesn’t go very fast at full throttle but will sometimes blow white smoke and kick up for just a moment. Would this be the a dirty carb or something else? I just replaced both spark plugs and that helped the sputtering but still doesn’t want to rev up high when it’s in gear.

How did you torque the flywheel nut without it turning?
@thesmallengineguy69242 ай бұрын
You can use a piston stop tool. It threads into the spark plug hole. Do a search and there should be a good explanation.

Have a 1980s 8hp evinrude supposedly wasnt ran much same carb put new plugs and hooked fuel to it ran awesome idled fine even in gear took it out 2 times ran great went to leave couldn't keep running when I throttled it had alot of fuel in the air box any idea appreciate it
@thesmallengineguy69243 ай бұрын
Sounds like the float is stuck. Needle and seat need a clean. You can confirm this by removing the fuel line while running and if it calms down and runs good after a couple minutes plug the fuel line back in and see if you start getting the excess fuel problem again. Do this a couple times. To confirm. Hopefully that helps. Good luck
@masontaylor65433 ай бұрын
Probably could have cleaned the carb just to rule that out of the equation on the hard start

So i bought a mariner 15hp from that time period....684c prefix code....its obviously a yamaha but can not seem to find a service manual.....whats got me caught up is the ignition system...guy i bought it from got a new cdi but didnt install....so schematics would be great
@thesmallengineguy69245 ай бұрын
I’m thinking yours might be newer than that. 1980 or newer. If it’s CDI ignition then it would be. Try looking for newer drawings or replacing one wire at a time when you swap it out. Run a video while you do it. That’s what I do lol. Hope it works out.
@justinash24295 ай бұрын
@thesmallengineguy6924 that's the issue...the kid pulled it all out so I have nothing to go off of.....im not certain it's cdi....it has 2 coils...and then a trigger or something for timing underneath the flywheel.....on off switch was removed....so really need schematics....I believe your right on the yr....what I've gathered is its a 1981 mariner model....but a clone of the 78 yamaha 15b......be so simple to get going if I could just find a manual or something along those lines....

whats the piece called that you pull out to kill the engine?
@robertknight46726 ай бұрын
That's the safety key. A lot of today's low end snowblowers don't have a throttle lever that will stop the engine. I have an older version of this snowblower The Tecumseh 5 horse Flathead on it that does allow you to just turn the throttle down to the sto position without needing to take the safety key out.

How much would you have paid to do that in a shop , probably a lot this is why i have always done my own servicing mine is still under a warranty but it aint going back to have me slugged x hundred dollars for some one to change the oil at 20 hrs these are pretty simple motors and you tube is your friend ,plenty of forums to get advice . Basic maintenance oil water pump impellor ect and your engine will run forever yamahas didnt get there reputation from building crap motors great video for people to learn how to do the job themselves put more up as there aint to many on 40hp four strokes take care .

It's strange how it sounds "OK" while running, but has a definite clunk while rotating by hand. I'm wondering if perhaps something is wrong with the gearcase making it clunk like that. Probably the powerhead, but possibly the gearcase. Oh yeah, forgot that the upper bearing seems to be sloppy as well. Wonder if this thing spent some time under water, and internals got rusted... The "throttle cracking screw" may have been in too far causing that roller to be so far off the cam as well. And yeah, watch out for those damn plastic cams with the little set screw to adjust WOT, they will bust like that everytime when you try to advance them. In this case, that cam is not available separately, you would have to replace the whole retainer/cam assembly, which is quite expensive. Such a shame, would love to know exactly what happened to this thing. Oh well, plenty of good parts to donate to other engines. I'm a two stroke guy for sure, worked on these engines "back in the day", when they were brand new. Don't listen to silly criticisms like that, always check everything simple you can check...

Not completely sure about this one. Definitely wasn’t right and as much I feel like I should have pulled it apart to investigate these models (4,5,6,7.5 and 8 hp) are getting hard to find parts as you said. I ended up selling it to a guy and told him what I had found. It was listed for sale the next morning for $600. At least I can sleep at night. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the Video. Looks like a pretty easy job. My 1998 Mercury Big Foot still has the original timing belt. I ordered my belt from Mercury for $60 US. It is a Gates branded belt, but with a quicksilver part number on the package. The power head on my Merc is the same an F25 Yamaha. The F25 is the same as the F40 with a cylinder chopped off. So most parts are interchangeable.
