loved watching this video, even if it's really old coming back to your channel every couple years reminds me of my own progress as a dev. When i first started watching your channel i was fairly new in to the whole scene of game development. I'd just started getting to grips with Hammer (yes the source one) and had played around a bit with UE4. I had this idea that i wanted to be a professional level designer and work at valve. I'd just read their "new employee handbook" and was enthralled at the idea that there could be a company i could potentially work on that has this flat structure and all these cool projects going on. Of course as i grew up i'd realized that valve was not only not the same company that made half-life (the game that everyone thinks valve can still make) but also that the standard required to get a level design job in the industry was much harder than it was 10 or so years before where the skill wasn't so specialized. Add on to that the fact that basically no one in the industry uses old BSP editors anymore and i slowly started feeling like maybe joinng the triple A industry isn't worth it. i then proceeded to spend 6 months on a game dev degree which was... interesting? they spent almost half the time teaching unity, which isn't exactly the closest thing to most proprietary triple a engines, and the other half was spent with stuff like "design culture" and "history of video games" which are interesting but not particularly useful. After dropping out i just ended up looking for a different career path, but all the while doing modding/indie projects on the side and that's where i've been more or less. I think the industry has kinda lost something in the years since smaller teams were common, the problem isn't just the ballooning budgets and scope, it's the fact that not enough people working in the industry actually want to work in a somewhat autonomous environment where they have to be a generalist and pull their weight if they want the game to be done. It's like, game dev as a job itself has changed, it's not enough to tackle the scope issue if the people working there are only used to big teams with lots of specialization. Add on to that the unfortunate state of affairs with massive layoffs where a lot of industry veterans are left no only jobless but unable to make use of their skills effectively and i think there's a pretty clear reason why there's been a decline in the quality of new releases. anyway this was kind of a long ramble i apologize.

Re brain cancer. When those useless male docs say, "theres nothing wrong with you, you just need antidepressants", just pay for the MRIs yourself. Theyll light up like a chrismas tree and you can then go back to those useless males, VINDICATED!! Dont let useless males tell ya anything. Take the bull by the horns.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I am imagining by the date you mentioned that you are at an anniversary about now. I’m sure that’s really hard. Thank you for being so vulnerable with your story and feelings. My mom was just diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. I’m just beginning to chart this unfamiliar and unwelcome territory. Your words were healing, informative and honest. What a blessing it must have been for your mom to have you by her side. I don’t live in the same state as my mom either and it’s so tricky! My husband and I used to live about an hour north west of Seattle, so it was fun to imagine all the beauty that you see each day and are surrounded by. Take a good look at that mountain on a clear day for me. Sending you a hug across the miles.❤ Thank you again.

Growing up and seeing how the world really works sucks. It doubly sucks for games, because I feel like in the beginning gaming was a pure and fresh art form. Now, it's become huge and corporatized and the biggest games have lost all of their soul. Indie games still exist, but there are a lot of them and they typically aren't talked about as much as the AAA games.

I'm so sorry about your mom. I'm going through this as I'm watching yIur video. Dad has brain cancer glioblastoma. Sitting watching my dad slowly die is terrible. I watched my mom die of stage IV Lung Cancer. She live 4 years. Yes we had time together but I watched her slowly die. Ppl don't understand that saying atleast you had time with her isn't what I wanted to hear. Now I'm going through it with my dad but this cancer is a lot quicker. He was diagnosed around end of January or beginning of feb.. He is now in the nursing home and he can't walk. He barely wants to eat and at times refuses his meds. He hallucinates some days and some days he is somewhat a little like himself. It's a terrible disease. I believe he is getting close to the end. Prayers for you and your family and others going through this.

Those long-term/skilled nursing acilities can be the absolute worst! My grandmother died due to the most severe bed sores (to the bone) from lack of care at the last one she was in. She ended up being transferred to a hospice facility that cared for her until she passed due to their negligence and them causing her bed sores that the hospice people said was the worst case they had seen. It was just awful! I feel for you in your experience! They are just chronically understaffed, and its a tragedy when its someone in need of round the clock care! Im so sorry for your loss and the painful experience in her last few weeks! 💔

Half of us will die from cancer, I watched it take my step-father in his 50s and step-sister in her 40s. The bullshit surrounding it is ultra-thick. First, you must get information because w/ the doctors you're kept in the dark on stats. They want HAPPY THOUGHTS - but you need to flush that shit down the toilet and ride a wave of Nietzschean Will to Power. When my step-dad died within 6 months specialists in Houston kept us in the dark, the doc at the hospital kept us in the dark, my family thought he was going to walk out and be deerhunting in a few months, but I knew better. I pulled a nurse aside and asked her "Look, you know what's going on you see this all the time, what's his condition?" WELL SIR YOU REALLY JUST NEED TO BE WITH HIM AND SUPPORT HIM YADDA YADDA. I said cut the bullshit and tell me and she said "He's not going to last the night." And he did not. I have seen 2 instances where adults have forgone the chemo and opted to take a pile of painkillers home and die in their LazyBoy high as a kite watching Gilligan's Island - and I must say, those ppl lasted longer than my step-dad tho chemo has come far. Regardless, research the type and stage, know the deal. Cancer is OVERWHELMINGLY genetic, as in - just consider it all genetic. The first thing they want to know is if it runs in the family. It is also a kind of Blade Runner killswitch for Androids but for humans because the chances you will eventually get cancer are 100% if you live long enough, that's a fact w/ men and prostate cancer. I had a girlfriend whose daughter had it, I spent a lot of time at the Children's Hospital in New Orleans. If you want some perspective, go to the Children's Hospital for a day. If you thought it was sad w/ your mother, let me tell you, six year olds have no clue what is going on and the fear in their eyes when they're being put under is next level tragic. Be grateful you're one of 24 individuals on this planet who lives in America - we have the best treatment thanks to capitalism. The Brits stupid NHS was a death sentence for women w/ breast cancer just a short time ago. Capitalism = innovation, no two ways about it. As with HIV, the only cure wil be genetic. It's no different than the code you play with just more complicated. I used to work with mainframe programs 60 thousand lines long. DNA is 75 million lines of 80 characters each. Your mom looks like a doll, may she rest in peace. That first taste of death in the family is a bitch, not two ways about it.

I have a question. I think in a previous video you said you went to a private school for smart kids. I was wondering; are there no bullies there? Since everyone's nerdy, is everyone chill? Or do the nerds also form a social hierarchy where bullies emerge?
