*To be fair, Dave didn't write "Leper Messiah." He claimed to have inspired it via a song called "The Hills Run Red" with no evidence.* I'm not saying it's unlikely he wrote it--but there's no evidence. "Leper Messiah" also doesn't sound like a Dave riff, although it does suggest his more melodic moments like the solo to "My Last Words." The most Dave-ish riff of all of them here is probably "Phantom Lord," followed by "Metal Militia," followed by "Jump in the Fire." All just scream "Megadeth song." And you can easily see how "Trust" and "Jump in the Fire" are pretty similar. What to look for in a Dave riff? Lots of Pantera-ish chromaticism (note the similarities between the intro riffs to "The Four Horsemen" and "Cowboys from Hell"), Slayer fast 16th note picking on a pedal tone, usually E, and riffs generally composed of more melodic lines composed of individual notes in higher registers. Dave riffs are generally riffs that sound like they are written by someone who mainly plays lead instead of rhythm and generally thinks of riffs in terms of scale shapes for solos, especially pentatonic minor ones. James seems to be much more chordal and into the chunky stuff on the low end of the neck, probably because he doesn't do a lot of the three note per string scalar Paul Gilbert style fast alternate picking stuff.

Every Duncan Designed set I tried sounded like Invaders--muddy and full of low end. They were also put into lightweight, bolt on, Floyded MIJ guitars (probably to compensate for the bright tone). I never liked them and took them out. I'll have to look at the back stickers to see what model they were, but the pole pieces looked like the large Invader style ones. My view on import pickups is, if you like the tone, keep them. But most of the time they will be two conductor only, will be more prone to interference, and are often not voiced as clearly as more expensive pickups. That said, I'm never taking the stock pickups out of my Indonesian made Peavey Rotor, a Floyded Explorer copy. The pickups are only two conductor but they sound great even though the guitar is a 24.75" with 12 gauge strings in B standard.

I find this is largely guitar dependent. On my MIJ Jackson Kellys, which are 25.5" with Schaller 1302 bridges I retrofitted on them, I use 10 gauge strings in E standard. 3 springs angled is enough to maintain tuning stability. On my Kramer Assault 220 FR, essentially a 25.5" LP copy, the OFR on it came with 4 springs straight and parallel. The action is a little stiffer but the tuning is more stable. Without the 4 springs, the guitar shifts out of tune slightly. As far as experimenting with springs, resistance of the bar, etc., I think adjusting the size of the tone block is more productive. Most of my guitars have very shallow bodies and use 32mm blocks if I want to be able to cover the spring claw cavity. Going to a heavier block was something I didn't like. I used a 42mm block Schaller 1302 ruthenium bridge on an ESP F Type in Bb standard because that bridge and block were on sale. I thought using a bigger block on a lower tuning would make the guitar have a chunkier sound. But, the tone was looser in the lows even though the guitar body is bright and light. The bar was heavier because of the increased mass of the block. The lows are something I would just roll off in a mix. Additionally, I can't use the spring claw cover on that guitar with the 42mm block because the body is too thin. Since metal usually requires a tight low end anyway, I'm not a big tone wood/big block/neck thru guy, as all of these tend to make the tone less tight by introducing more low end. So, I wouldn't throw money at things that are just going to produce diminishing returns. There might be a small amount of increased resonance and sustain from set neck and thru neck guitars with tune-o-matic bridges vs. bolt-on Floyded guitars when the guitar is playing by itself, but it's debatable you will be able to hear that in a mix because you will just narrow the guitar's frequency band to make room for the other instruments. If you want real sustain that sounds like a cranked amp feeding back for several seconds at bedroom volumes, you're better off using a Sustainiac/Sustainer/EBow.

I have a floyd rose 1000 series on my ltd guitar. I can do anything that someone with an ofl can do and I've never had a problem with it staying in tune. I also added locking tuners.

I've always used two fingers but decided to mess around and see what the hell he was doing playing with the third finger. I actually recognized that especially with the really fast down picking stuff and standing up while playing playing with three fingers actually gave me better control and The strokes were much more consistent. Like it made me realize why he is the god of down picking

In general, I agree with your comments about hardness of metals but when it comes to threads it's greatly different. Two threads of the came hardness screwing together will lead to a thing called galling. This is where the two steels bind together and seize up by chewing into each other. The fix is to harden the male thread, so galling doesn't happen as you cannot harden the internal thread without hardening the whole saddle. A good example is two threads made of plasticine, they will bind up but if you use plastic and plasticine, it will last allot longer.

Just ordered 2 FR 1984 trems for my Jackson soloist and LTD M1000. Excited to see how they perform compared to the 1000 series. If anyone’s looking for a 1984 series, Stewmac has a bunch in stock for both chrome and black.

Ive had everything except a genuine floyd original. But my favorite experiences have been with a jackson js32 king v and my squire contempirary strat. Both have licensed floyds on them. The one on the jackson was actual dog shit. If you dumped the bar you were guranteed to go out of tune. So i swapped it with a floyd special and it was amazing. The one on the strat is AWESOME. I abuse that thing to death. My 1000 and 1500 are the best of the bunch. But ive also had 3 different floyd specials. I had a schecter damien elite at the same time i owned my jackson. Swapped that floud with a floyd special burnt chrome and put the old floyd in the jackson. I have since lost those two guitars and recently obtained ANOTHER schecter damien elite. And i now intend to put the burnt chrome 1000 in that one. However with that said. Between my floyd specials and all the ones my dad has had. I dont understand the hate the special gets. Its really not a bad trem as long as you take care of it. I give them no less abuse than the 1000 series and they hold up great
