You need to realize engineered obsolescence is a thing. They are doing on purpose to sell more controllers. Cheap manufacturing, allowing mistakes, and variances in the manufacturing process is one of those dirty jobs people are hired for no one talks about. As long as most of the products made last longer than warranty period, it not illegal but it is immoral.

@colinflanagan25026 күн бұрын
I know I'm late to the party but did you do a durability test versus a traditional controller. Like what deadzone is needed to stop drift after rotating the stick for different times at a certain speed or something?
@MariusHeier14 күн бұрын
@@colinflanagan2502 Not really. But in the beginning you can save it with larger and larger deadzones. But eventually its gonna be hopeless.

A great product, shipped quickly and install took a little over an hour and a half. Mine was the JSD30 version and the bit in the video around 3-4 minute mark about filing away the support structure was 100% required, otherwise the underside of the USB-C jack wouldn't fit. I made a little blunder and installed the ribbon cable backwards initially and was scared I broke it, turned the pinned side around and viola it worked!

I just want to buy controllers with this tech in it already "at a price I'm not supposed to have access to" (because I can't solder or even get a housing closed again after pulling the screws out). Do I have options? A wireless Xbox controller would be my first buy. Have any of your patreons took the idea and ran with it?

Just a minute or two into the video when you start talking about wear on resistive material and the need to eliminate contact between materials to eliminate wear. My mind started flying in thoughts about how I would do it, how can we track the position of joystick without contacts and then it clicked I that I can use magnets, few mins into the video and boy I was right!

why not just add a touchscreen under the joysticks and add something under the joystick to control the touch screen like a brush on a canvas or something or a mouse sensor underneath why rely on potentiometers
@SomeCanine12 күн бұрын
They know how to make better joysticks. They don't want to. IIRC the PS3 had hall effect sticks that didn't drift. They learned that they can sell more controllers and thus make more profit if they don't build them that way. It's a business, not a charity.
@doltBmB13 күн бұрын
There is no incentive to solve it because the solution most people have is to buy another controller.

Very little moving parts needed. Wich means is affordable etc. Just shoot the light on a reader to get movement of you desired controler game movement. More ideas if you wish. If you licensed it out at like 1% of all joystick costs, you'd be set for life dude, and you'd be able to continue your little projects without ever worrying about paying for them again. I think you should reconsider, just like the author of "The Witcher" (Andrzej Sapkowski) did when he finally came to terms with how insanely successful the franchise had become from video game sales.

In the 1990s I worked at a company that created remotely controlled variable valves for water cooling systems. While every other manufacturers were making the valves using resistive potentiometers to know the position of the valves, we were making them using an array of hall effect sensors. We had it down to 0.1% resolution and there was no drift. The control unit was essentially a computer interface where the valves were set to anywhere between 0 to 100% open. The valves were so good we couldn't keep up with demand. Eventually a large company with huge resources reverse engineered our method and not only created a volume of product we couldn't match. But they also made it much cheaper. I believe that 10-15 person operation eventually went out of business. I quit working for them in 96 or 97. I did a quick google search and while I can find a company with the same name, they are based in China and make the card readers like you see at gas pumps.
