It was interesting to hear the Professor pronounce "Sauron" as Saw-Ron, rather than Sore-Ron. On the point of the misspelling of his middle name, Reuel, is it actually a misspelling or is it the Latin version in which the letter "V" represents a "U" in engraving into stone? He was quite fond of Latin.

no to say that "in an ideal world this would have been part of the history of middle earth" is a wrong statement, unfinished tales is as strong of canon as the published silmarillion, the history of middle earth isnt! also unfinished tales is basically a collection of short stories and extended background lore, and i love it! it has a feeling of a grimoire compiled by a wizard who found long forgotten texts

Can someone explain to me why the 2023 single volume edition has more pages than the 2011 edition
@rlukins10 күн бұрын
It's just different paper stock, which explains the different thicknesses. I believe the text blocks and paginations are unchanged.

The box set looks almost identical to the one that has the hobbit and lotr illustrated versions, but these aren;t illustrated editions. Such a shame, would have bought the set but I want the illustrated versions, guess I'll have to get each one separate...

Not sure if some of you noticed it too, but when I recently got myself a facsimile first edition of the Hobbit. And if you're familiar with the original 1937 dust-jacket typo, (for those who don't know, when the Hobbit first came out, there were only 1500 copies made, and all of them had a mistake, the mistake was on the back flap of the dust-jacket, it was a name; Dodgeson, and it is said that J.R.R. Tolkien himself corrected the typo on all the 1500 copies, Tolkien just crossed a tiny line on the letter e with his pen), so, the publisher's has probably decided to treat us a little bit with the facsimile edition, if you have it, then take a look at the text on the back flap of the dust-jacket, there's a sort of a reference to the original first edition, the name Dodgeson has the letter e crossed (it's more of a black dot covering the letter e). To me it's a really nice reference and pretty cool.

Thanks for this video, I am interested in getting hold of good hardcopies of the Histories of Middle Earth. As others have said this may be the best opportunity I am going to get. Two questions/ideas for videos I would be interested in: 1. Do you cover your books in anything? They look shiny on the shelf, I would interested to see a demo of the process. 2. Non-Tolkien, but I would really like a tour of your history collection, I see a lot of the Yale English Monarchs series there. Thanks

I'm marveling at the thickness of the last edition 2023 single volumen, looks almost like LoTR... but is really that much information? I mean I read the Hobbit first time like a month ago, very short tale, and now this history of the Hobbit looks like even bigger than, LotR itself ... why is it this big?
